Removing your hat at end of round

Recommended Posts

I respect it, but do find it kinda gross seeing a tour player sweating all day, finish round, removes hat and runs hand trough sweaty hair and reaches for other players hand. Yeah I'm a germ phoebe, but tradition is tradition

About 5 minutes old. :swoon:

I'm missing you on this or the implied sarcasm.....

Removing your hat is a gesture of respect that is rooted in humility. By removing your hat you are making a gesture that states regardless of whether you are the winner or loser we respect each other and acknowledge when walking off the 18th green we are still equal among men. It saddens me to see so many traditions and acts of respect fall by the wayside. Good manners and etiquette have gotten me a lot further in life than my education.

Or, playing your best and being a good sport is more important than some empty gesture.

I'm happy to shake hands and say, with a smile, "Thanks for your company."

It is not an empty gesture, it is an acknowledgement of mutual respect.

I'm disappointed that so many people have trouble understanding this very basic sign of gratitude.

I think you're disappointed that not everyone agrees with you.

Here's what I like. Shake hands, smile and say thank you. If you wish to do other things, I won't judge you.

I'm neutral on the whole affair and I usually didn't bother to remove my hat for a handshake at the muni I was playing. I joined a private course this year though and when the gentleman I met and played with yesterday removed his hat, I did as well. I have no problem taking it off and no problem when someone else doesn't.

I think we need to get something straight... removing hats to shake hands is a sign of respect. Not removing a hat (unless perhaps in certain business situations/cultures) is not a sign of disrespect. Personally I'd prefer you remove your sunglasses (unless scripts)--- I don't care about the hat even though I may typically remove mine.

Look at these two hacks :)--- a display of congratulations, gratitude and show of respect that hasn't often been matched.

I'm all for the display of good manners. However, I'm also the guy who wishes we still had to have a jacket and slacks to enter a casino on the Vegas strip.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

My regular group greets each other with handshakes before the round, and we always remove our hats and shake hands afterward. When I'm playing with others, I always remove my hat and shake hands. If my playing partners chose not to, I could care less - I'm only responsible for myself, and have no interest in schooling adults.

One of the things I enjoy about golf is there are generally accepted rules and etiquette, and it's refreshing to see 'common' courtesy, if only for a few hours. Once the round is over and I'm driving home, all that is out the door.

Update: I played golf on Friday with 3 hat wearers. I, per usual, was without hat. 2 of 3 took off their hat. The one who didn't is a well-known jerkoff at the club. Case closed.

Well, there you go. No more posts are needed.

If you have read this thread and are of the opinion that it is irrelevant whether you remove your hat or not you now are left with the seed of "do I want to be a new breed of modern golfers who are ego charged out for themselves individuals? or would I prefer to be a gentleman that wants to play golf and be a part of noble traditions that can easily spill over to all aspects of my life?". This is not about elitism or snobbery it is about sportsmanship and a display of comradery that is sadly missing in most of our everyday endeavors. it is a very simple gesture that costs you nothing. I came to the game late in my life (40's) but it always felt better in the early days when we all took off our hats and shook hands on the 18th green despite how good or bad the round was. I have read the posts that are saying it is a new thing and others arguing that it is a long standing tradition I personally could care less I think it is a wonderful gesture that is uniting and bonding with your fellow golfers, that may be of no importance to some but it is supremely important to me.

I am one of those who understand that removing one's hat was not a universal custom on the PGA tour for quite a long while, as we've seen in some photos and videos. It has only recently (10 years, maybe nearing 20) become the universal standard on the PGA tour. At my age (62), and with 50 years in the game, I don't think I can be labelled as "a new breed of modern golfers who are ego charged out for themselves individuals". I ALWAYS shake hands with my playing companions at the end of the round, to me THAT is the universally accepted thing to do. But customs and manners DO change, they're not written in stone, and this particular custom is becoming closer to universal for every-day golfers. So I'll continue to try to adapt. But if we do play together, don't take my hat remaining on my head as an insult, it probably just means I have too much crap in my mitts to shake hands and hold onto my hat, without dropping all that crap on the ground and delaying those guys in the fairway behind us even more.

I don’t think it has anything to do with age or skill or level of competition. At 27 years old it’s just always what I’ve done. Don’t know that it was ever taught to me or explained to me but I do think it’s a respectful show of sportsmanship. I’m not gonna be offended if a playing partner doesn’t do likewise but to me it’s in the same realm as looking someone in the eye when they are talking to you or excusing yourself from the dinner table. It’s just what I do and will continue to do.
