Total non-story. At least it would've been in the pre-twitter days.

It's a random occurrence that led to a reasonable schedule adjustment. Somehow, on the internet, it's gotten twisted into some sort of character issue or conspiracy theory.

Not character or conspiracy, just dumb if you are a pro golfer and you show up without golf clubs.

Reminds me of when Homer.....

Again how is it dumb? He didn’t show up without golf clubs, an airline lost them. He WD which is the definition of not showing up. Airlines lose bags constantly, even on non stop flights. There’s zero you can do about it. Intelligence literally has zero to do with it.

If he was so smart he would buy a seat for his clubs next to him in first class, ha ha! Pamper them with sparkling wine other fine spirits.

I am a nobody and I have a back up set up clubs I use for travel. I gotta think the pro's have a back up set?

Many don’t. And nobody travels with backups even if they have them. So find out morning US time that clubs are lost and get them from US to Europe by midnight the same day? Even worse if a manufacturer has to ship a set from West Coast headquarters as there is virtually zero percent change the tour van has an iron mode that’s 4 years old on hand.

they won’t let you through security with one club let alone a set.

“McDowell loses clubs and can’t play why?”

Because he is a mental midget.

I don’t care if I had to go to Walmart and play with the cheapest of the cheap off the shelf box set, if it meant me getting a chance to qualify for a major, I’m doing it and not giving it a second thought. He admits it’s mental. I just can’t fathom that mindset.

David Frost set the PGA putting record for fewest putts (92!) at Hilton Head after the airline lost his clubs.

And many know about Calcavecchia's 62 playing with loaner clubs and shoes!

Nuff said!

Absolutely no comparison. This was for a 36-hole, one day qualifier, not the event itself. He decided to prioritize on his best chance to qualify.

Except it's not his only (or even best) chance. Would you play a 36 hole day with a different set of clubs a few days prior to a multiday club championship where you had a legit chance to win?

Yes, because it is simply another opportunity to get in that I wouldn’t want to pass up.

Maybe since he’s already won a major, he just doesn’t care. I wouldn’t want to skip it, then not qualify through the other two tourneys and always say to myself “I should have rented clubs and given it a shot”.

there isnt a Tour player out there that doesnt have his specs on a set in his manufacturers tour van....If you have ever watched a pro cull a set of irons it can be done in a short amount of time...Technology today can replace a set immediately, the Tour van can repair or replace a club within hours if not minutes

Not buying the excuse

Tour van not at a qualifier. And even if they were there, how long would it take to put together a full set?

Hopefully his clubs show up soon

I thought the same thing others did when I heard he lost his clubs and decided not to play in the Open Qualifier. Could he not get a set of clubs made to his specs or even play off the rack?

When I heard he had two more shots to get in, and he wanted to focus on those opportunities -- I figured he's a professional athlete, and a major winner, he knows his game best.

I suppose when I win a major championship I can start lecturing the guy on how it's done.

he was committed to play in both the qualifier and the irish open (as i understand his tweet and other sources), so he obviously wanted numerous chances ... i'm sure he's not the only pro that wouldn't have wd from the qualifier, but it still begs the question why not give it a shot since you were already committed to both ...

I didn't get his logic, he stated he was better off not playing and preparing for the Irish but how much preparation can he do if he wont play without the missing set of clubs. I'm sure he feels it would decrease his chances but its not like an injury where if he played he could be harming the remainder of his season.

To me it seems a like a nothing to lose situation.

Because he will have a set by today, Tuesday, and can play a practice round and prep for the tournament while also conserving a ton of energy.

That or he is an elite professional and made the decision that would give him the best chance of qualifying, given he has already played in and won a major. But I'm sure your complete lack of experience in the manner trumps his, its just statistics right?
