I think I'm surprised this thread made it to eight pages. The initial rant sounds like an old fart that doesn't like change. Some of the other comments on the first page sound like old farts that don't like change. I can mark my ball with a condom wrapper (gold Magnum), bullet shell case, or fishing bate if I wanted. If the guy who's line I'm in says it's in the way, then I'll look to downsize the marker or move it. What's the big deal? Also, the reason I hate using things like pennies, dimes, nickels and quarters is that they can not be easily seen when someone is just walking on a green. A poker chip, or something of similar size, is more easily detected, so the chances of someone accidentally walking in your line (and potentially messing up your line) is smaller if your playing partners can actually SEE your marker.

Now I am an old fart (61) and I am sometimes resistant to change. This ball marker thing does not bother me at all. The condom wrapper thing I would not be able to putt all day from cracking up laughing about it. I once played with a guy that used a flat spinner fishing lure with the hooks removed for a marker because he was an avid fisherman too. I think I mentioned this earlier in this thread or maybe an earlier one. No one in any of the groups I play with gives two hoots what someone uses for a marker . Also being in this tourist mecca golf area sometimes I get paired up with out of towners on my Sunday afternoon rounds. I have yet to run into anyone regardless of skill that had any problems with my poker chips even though I will ask. In fact had an out of towner beat me to the question one day. I told him heck no I use a chip myself. In all honesty I do not pay attention to what marker someone uses. The only time I do is when playing in a scramble. LOL I played in a mixed team scramble the other week (it was free for me) because one of the ladies husband was at home with a hangover from a scramble the previous day. She had a real blingy ball marker and asked if it bothered me. I told her no she said it bugged the crap out of her husband. She said he would not allow her to use it on a scramble. It did not bother the other couple either so we let her mark out our spot on the green all day and she was thrilled to do so.

Poker chips don't bother one bit. If they are in my line I kindly ask to be moved.

I use a challenge coin and I also carry a Mercury dime, but I always use my challenge coin, always.

I’m only 38, but the 90s were my “formative years”. I never played with them, and don’t even recall ever owning them, I just knew a lot of people that were obsessed with them.

Man, the good old days of pogs and slammers. Be crunched over for hours on 2 knees trying to win. The good old days.

I haven't seen Pogs or Slammers in years. I remember them being very popular when I was in Elementary School. My friends had all different varieties of the Slammers.

As for the Poker chip deal, I don't see it as a big deal. If that makes them happy, so be it. If you don't like it, that's on you. Skimming through this reminded me of a podcast that a former Navy Seal named Jocko Willink did with a former POW in Vietnam. His name is Charlie Plumb, and he was in the Hannoi Hilton.

Part of the conversation from the podcast dealt with dealing with things that people do that annoy you, and how that's a you problem, not the person that is annoying you. Here's a clip of it if you have a couple of minutes.

Poker chips or other manhole covers are fine if they are nowhere near the hole. Anywhere around the hole it should be something flat, especially if someone is off the green and chipping. I have seen plenty of other people's chip shots hit a poker chip and come up several feet short of where they would have finished. I just ask guys to put something flat down when they are in between my ball and the hole.

Its not a matter of it being annoying, the mark should have as little effect on a rolling ball as possible. Its the marker's responsibility to make certain that their mark is not an obstruction...if they can think for one second about someone other than themself.

It’s really too bad you even have to ask. If I think my mark is anywhere near someone’s line I ask them if they would like it moved or if they would prefer soemthing smaller.

I did have a pulled putt deflect off a poker chip a few years back. Bounced it right into the cup for a birdie. It was our pro’s marker, we were on #18,and it ended up costing him some cash! I love the poker chips!

That first line as you stated it is called "Common Sense Courtesy"--- I will always ask a fellow player if my mark bothers him---- Back in the Mini Tour days it was also common sense or Professional courtesy if your playing competitor moved his marker to remind them to move it back after you putted.

I play a lot and my son has been playing with me and in tournaments since he was 6. I've seen it happen at least 5 or 6 times. Nothing amazing about it.

Those small lightweight plastic markers always fly away on windy days. I don't use a poker chip but a large coin because 1) it won't fly away 2) people don't walk on my line when they can clearly see it. I'll gladly move it as far away from your putting line as you ask but I will not respond kindly if someone picked up my marker, put down a penny and made a snide remark. Etiquette works 2 ways and your grumpy old guy showed a major lapse in it.

That's something I have never seen, a mark blow away.

Don't know where there poker chips craze came from. I always tried to make the fact that my ball is close to their line as inconspicuous as possible. I usually use a small coin, pennies work best as they are

harder to see. I hate the poker chip marker. It's huge and kind of distracting. If it's anywhere near my line, I'm just trying to avoid it. It's like it's subconsciously trying to get me to aim at the damn thing. I ask them to move their mark a putter head either direction, and I swear the earth shifted and it looks like it's right in my way again. Not the end of the world, but I have asked them to use something smaller in some situations. Wasn't angry and he had no problem doing so.
