Do you know what he uses to re-groove? I don't know if it's just low quality of your pic, but the grooves don't look like they've been milled? There's some roughness?

I have some heads that are now raw and grooves are not very deep. I'd like to mill them to proper depth.

These look great. I’m looking to strip my 712s too. Did you get them re-grooved as well? I’m not familiar with that process and want to know if feel changed and if they’re still conforming?

I do not know if they are conforming, but the grooves came back very sharp.  However the grooves did not seem as deep as they were previously.  I cannot verify that they were not as deep, but it looked that way to my eye.  

 

Usually when you have brown spots on iron heads, it is due to chrome wear.  When Doug strips the chrome, it only leaves raw steel which is usually still pretty sharp (depending on the severity of face wear).  

 

I did not play these heads before they were stripped.  They were given to me by a friend.  They were well used, but did not have any damage.  Before you send them off, you may want to remove the super shiny chrome "MB" sticker on the heads.  I used some direct heat and a sharp knife blade to pry that decal off.  If you don't remove it, that piece will not come off during the stripped process.  It leaves a little blank indention in the head when you remove it, but that was gonna get covered up by lead tape anyway.

My two recent builds. Cleveland CG7 Tours (with a C stamp!) and some old school MacGregors. Still waiting on few shafts to finish Macs.

I have a set of those same Macs sitting in a corner waiting for me to get around to sending them out for stripping.  Really really high quality forgings IMO.

Yes, they do have a pretty unique feel to them, especially now that they're raw.

Dang those MacGregors are sweet I played some great golf with those same irons.

Thanks. It's a 2-SW set, shafting it with AMT Whites and some grey Lamkin crosslines (once they get here). Shortages with everything are driving me nuts.

Once chrome is removed, how important is getting the face reblasted? My thinking is that once the faces start to rust there won't be as much definition between the faces and rest of the heads? I've got an electroplater lined up to remove chrome but I don't have easy access to a bead blaster

It's up to you I guess? Whatever you prefer. None of my irons were reblasted. I used a bench grinder to remove chrome, and orbital sander on the face.

I was looking through the thread and had trouble figuring it out. On Oughton golf he lists

 

“Raw finish with brush finish”

”Raw finish with high polish head”

 

Is there also just a raw option? Does anyone have pictures of each of these options when they receive it fresh from Doug? I’ve seen some differences in colors between the pictures on here. Appreciate the help guys!

Raw Finish with Wheel Buff, no Polish, no Brushed Finish. 

 

Only other thing you'd need to specify is with or without Blasted Face.

Just got my Adams CB1 Pro Black's back from Oughton a few days ago. He did a fantastic job on them. Unfortunately I lost my "before" pictures,  but the heads were in pretty poor condition.  I was sure when I sent them off that I was going to make a rusty set out of them, but now I can't decide. The rusty one in the picture is after about 15 minutes with the rust juice.

Don't use the rust juice. It makes it look like copper plating gone wrong?

Just my opinion. I like the look of raw metal, without being too polished.

What you see in that picture is because it only set for 15 minutes or so. You can wipe it all off with a towel at that stage. Here is a wedge that was sprayed every day for about a week.

I decided to plum brown finish my Kyoei raw wedge blanks. I’m curious to see how they patina from here. Love the aged look though
