Just wanted to ask you guys, do you wash the clubs with dish soap and water after you receive them from Doug or do you start oiling them up right away? Only ask cause when you get them from Doug there is a lot of gray metal dust on the heads that get your hands dirty when you touch them

I want to keep them this matte gray color as long as I can. I know rust will be unavoidable at some point

Get some Barricade rust preventer, you can find it at any gun shop or gun carrier. Spray it on them once or twice a month. Should keep the rust away

What has been the turn around time people have seen lately from Oughtons? And what’s the best way to get in touch with him on a project, phone, email, or just send the heads in with instructions?  I had been planning to send a set in over the winter, but looking at all the pictures here I don’t know if I can wait!

I’m interested to know if this affects the grooves in any way. I’d like to send in some Zx7, but want to make sure the grooves are still in good shape and tournament legal. Any input?

From my experience with Oughtons, I'm not sure he is eager to have long discussions about "projects" in the same way as Patrick Boyd.  I have found his approach to be, "Send me the heads.  I'll strip them raw.  You pay me.  I'll ship them back."  He will make other mods upon request.  Just put them on the order form.  

 

He's great.  Gets down to business.  He works quickly and the turnaround is as good as it gets with this kind of work.

I had to call him and leave a message because emails always bounce for me. Good communication, he called me back promptly.

Didn't really had anything to talk about other than ask what the turn around time is since I only wanted to strip four heads raw (got bored with doing it on a bench grinder!).

Was told 5-6 weeks, maybe quicker. It's been a month so I expect a call from him for payment in the next two weeks I guess.

Still legal for sure and from what I’ve seen the grooves are very clean and new looking. Unless your irons were really worn out, you end up with the groove underneath the nicked up chrome plating. So they come out looking very fresh

Got my heads from Oughton. He did a nice job and it took exactly what he estimated.

Now I just have finish them up on a bench grinder to give them what I like, this kinda satin, brighter kinda polished look.

Pics don't really show much difference and I don't know how else to describe it LOL

All time favorite thread and has inspired the following...

 

 Old 50* Vokey black SM5 I had laying around, stripped the head in vinegar, refinished and custom ground the bounce, did custom paint fill and shafted it with a Howard Jones spinner experiment; AMT white x100 8 iron shaft.  First time fully building a club too.  Does this mean you guys will start inviting me to parties?

They are nice heads. I have a set in storage shafted with VS Proto 100. Good clubs, I need to take them out for a spin...

Nice work!  I love the "Brain Fog".  I have one just waiting for the right thing to use it on.
