Launched summer of 1981, the release of MTV was a REALLY big deal (graduated HS in '81).  EVERYONE within a certain age group was talking about MTV, their favorite vids, their favorite crazy releases, your favorite VJ (Martha Quinn for me), etc.

 

 

 

PS: For your trivia night knowledge, the very first video was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles.

^ Remember the song, and like it a lot, but don't recall the movie or video.

I was on a price change team for Target in 1982 and never saw a Target coverall like that guys wearing.

Never saw Jennifer in their either either.  Would'a remembered that.

The movie was pretty forgettable. Definitely not one of John Hughes’ best. I believe the guy was a janitor in the movie. The video and the song are the highlights for sure.

Ah Concrete Blonde, don't hear much about them these days. I was never a particular fan, but this track always got to me:

 

We had a couple of folks mention the Descendants and some other 80's punk/hard core. Anyone remember these tracks?:

and

 

If you haven't seen the documentary film "Another State of Mind" it provides a wonderful perspective on the early 80's punk/hard core scene. Minor Threat and Ian Mckaye, the CCCC ramp, Gwar, the mid-Atlantic was a hotbed in those days.

 You've gotta respect them, but at the time they came out I was caught between hard music and soft. Given the long hair, it was tough to support them. Anything that hedged close to Poison and teased hair was suspect. I'm sure you can remember. 

 

This did get me thinking about this track, however. It was one of the ones that really carried me over from hard core into more melodic music - particularly the Manchester sound of the late 80s/early 90s. Once I found the Stone Roses, Charlatans UK, The La's, etc. it was all over for me.

Yeah they had the long hair, I never considered them anything close to the 80's hair bands. Wasn't poofed up pretty and 2 cans hairspray.
