What does it matter what you call it? Your view seems to be that golf season is four tournaments and everything else is meaningless filler. Half the time I enjoy watching the Players more than the PGA. Before this year you wondered why the PGA was still a major after the Tour split from the PGA.

No one is saying they dislike the Players as a tournament. People are saying they dislike the never-ending marketing push made by the PGA tour (and US TV networks) on behalf of the tournament.

I could not agree more with you, manufacturing a major is a desperate attempt to write history and really nothing more than a marketing ploy to try and create more revenue. Majors are defined by history, unless you play on the LPGA or "Champions tour"

The Ryder Cup has basically been played on resort courses in Europe most years, in the US a mix between good private and resort courses.

 

While Europe gets it right on how they run the team they almost always get it wrong on the venue. In the US we usually have a really good venue (Mostly former major championship venues) , but the team is managed poorly.

I'm glad it's back in March. A big part of the problem, besides knowing 4 majors is plenty, is that the course is Mickey Mouse and symbolic of all that is boring American design. The course had it's detractors since it became the home in the mid 70's. The 17th has to be the most ridiculous hole in all of golf. I wish I knew why they want this to be a major.

Not to speak for the other guy, but for me the Players often ranks above both the PGA _and _the US Open when it comes to "quality of tournament."

 

But that still doesn't make it a "major," which IMO requires a bit more history than just being a Deane Beman scheme from the 70s that happened to stick.

The Players has about the same history as the championship for Tour players as the PGA had before that ended in 1968

What point are you trying to make here? Because it's certainly not self-evident, whatever it is.

 

And why 1968? Are you thinking of '58, when it switched to stroke play? Either way, by either 1958 or 1968, it had been regarded as the 4th major for several decades. There's pretty much nothing analogous between the first few decades of the PGA and the first few decades of the Players.
