Set Gap Wedge vs Specialist gap wedge (like Vokey, etc)

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a gap wedge that matches your iron set vs a vokey type wedge? My Gap wedge needs to be replaces, and I am trying to figure out which direction to go in. I have P790 irons, and I never chip with my gap wedge. I only use it for full shots, and occasionally a little knock down 3/4 type shot. Trying to figure out what would be best for me to buy.

I had a vokey type gap wedge up until I got my i210's. I really only used my 51 degree vokey for full swings anyway, so the i210 U wedge gives me more forgiveness and consistency from 120 yards. I have also loved using it around the green to chip to back/uphill pin locations.

The only drawback I can see is being able to rip shots back on the green, but the U wedge gives me plenty of spin to control the ball and hold greens.

From the sounds of it, if you never use your gap wedge for chipping, I'd go with a set gap wedge. I use my gap wedge for longer chip shots and longer green side bunker shots, so I've always played a Vokey type gap wedge for the little bit of extra spin that I can get and the ability to more easily open the face as needed.

The biggest difference is “specialty” gap wedges likely Vokey and others offer more versatile grinds/bounce and shape that players like that use they’re gap wedge for less then full shots or like to play the wedge slightly open. Over the years I’ve played both “set” gap wedge and currently play the Ping Stealth at 50deg for gap. I have he Cobra gap wedge in my current set. Same loft and goes the same as the ping. But my style is to play more open blade shots with the gap and when you do that with Cobra it just doesn’t sit quite right. Also, when your set gap wedge wears out it can be tougher to find a replacement whereas the dedicated wedges are easy to replace.

I'd say go with a set gap wedge if you are using it mostly for 1/2 shots and above. The forgiveness in the club head will make up for the small loss of spin... only reason to go vokey would be if you like to flight your wedges more... it opens up more shots, but if you aren't hitting them, why bother?

I think (in my experience) a set gap wedge (or wedge in the let’s say 48°-52° range) will be more geared towards full swing shots. Especially for Cavity-back and forged players-cavity type clubs. Their feel matches the rest of the set.

Vokey/specialty wedges are designed with short game shots in mind, (bounce, grinds, etc) and tend to match the feel of other wedges.

When I played burner plus irons I took out the set A-wedge (50°) and put in a 49° cleveland 588, because the cavity back and hottish face _made me perceive_ the club as unusable around the green.

Since you expect to hit full shots Id lean set-wedge. As for me a 49-52° wedge is my go-to for chipping, I went specialty.

Played a Vokey 50* for last 5 years and always felt like i got punished on slight mis-strikes. I recently switched to a Set GW at 50* and kept my same shaft that i play in my irons and its been amazing how much more confident i am with it. Actually made an ace with it a few weeks back!

Congrats on the ace! I'm actually vaguely regretting the Vokey 50 degree I bought this season... I use it a ton for 100 yard shots and maybe I should have gone with the mizuno.

Oh well... I still like it. I don't feel like I mishit it a ton or in a way a CB would fix.

I have used a set gap wedge and miss the added length on full shots. But I have also gone one step further, I play a 46 and a 50 vokey and JPX 900 tour irons. I don't think I would go back to a set gap wedge I like chipping with the vokey too much. But I would for sure go back to a set pitching wedge if I could. It might just be the different shafts but I have too much drop off in distance from 9(135) to PW(115). I am going to reshaft my PW and maybe get it bent strong. But will keep the 50 vokey, it is shorter but I do not feel it is any harder to hit.

I think it depends on you game.

I only use my gap wedge as an 'iron'.

So, I use one from the set.

I agree with @kiw1982 on this one. It all depends on your ability and the comfort level with a specialty wedge. I recently went to a fit and thought for sure I would go with the iron set Gap Wedge but found the SM7 50F grind to be pretty forgiving and I like the added bonus of extra spin that the set gap wedge could not provide.

this... Ive always had a vokey or cleveland gap wedge for 20+ years until this year when I got the i210s and got the U wedge.. much happier looking at the same design style on full shots and even a step further I went glide 2.0 for my 54 which also sets up the same. doubt Ill ever go with a speciality wedge again

I was fit a little while back at a Titliest Thursday for a 50F and and 54S, and I had every intention of buying the vokey, since my Callaway was very worn. The fitter suggested i put the shaft that is in my irons, which he surprisingly did not have with him (PX 5.5). As it works out, one of my playing partners had the SM6 wedges in 52F and 56S, but with the PX5.5 shafts. We played last night after work, so I asked him to play his wedges. I noticed a huge distance gap between the PW and the 52 (20 yards), and I felt like the 52 went really high (even when I was trying to lower the flight). That is what started the discussion regarding the set wedge vs specialty wedge.

For the record, I have always had a non set gap wedge. I currently play Callaway MD3s in 50 and 54, and the original PM grind in 58. I am open to any wedge manufacturer, I just happen to have been fitted at the TT event.

Sounds like a pretty much mixed bag on the responses above which isn't surprising. I'd say whichever one works better for you on the shots you are going to use it for. I personally had Vokey gap wedge for quite a few years but I ended up selling it and getting the gap wedge to match my irons (shafted the same, etc) and for full shots, it's much better for me. I also hit bump and run chips with it and it works great. Maybe buy the matching gap wedge and give a try for the rest of the summer and make your decision that way.

If you're using it primarily for full swings, get the set Gap, if possible. I've had the same experience you had with the 52 and set clubs, they're just not designed the same way that iron sets are, which are increasingly being designed to be hotter and deliver just a bit more distance. For what it's worth, whenever I go with a non set wedge I usually decrease the loft gap between the PW and Gap from 4-5 degrees down to 2-3 to keep my distance gaps consistent.

+1, the size and shape of the CBX makes it feel very comparable to a set wedge, but I feel it has a slight edge in versatility over a set wedge, particularly on open face bunker shots

I go all the way to PW with my Vokey wedges. I like to hit 1/2, 3/4, knockdowns, pitches, sand shots, etc. with all of them and the PW in my set has a really wide sole compared to the rest of the set. I like the extra spin I get from the Vokey wedges around the green.

I don't think I've liked any of the set gap wedges I've had. They always seem weak to loft for some reason. Could be my swing. I just love my 48* wedges, currently is a vokey with a more full swing friendly grind, can't remember the specific one off hand but I think it was the M.

I was the same for a long time until I started to notice after about 8-10 rounds the Vokeys stopped spinning as predictable.. I have always found that Vokeys milling lines wear off super fast compared to cleveland or Ping

I haven't noticed that with mine. I've had mine in the bag since last season and they still spin great.

I play Mizuno MP64's, so there is no set wedge available.

Nevertheless, the main thinking I've always seen from GolfWRX, is ...., if you use the gap wedge mainly just for full shots, then go with a set wedge because it blends better and is usually more forgiving.

If you use the gap for chips, partial shots, etc..., then go with the specialty wedge.

Good luck

As a side note, smaller golf shops are carrying fewer specialty gap wedges these days because so many iron sets include them. Saw a couple of current-run GWs in the PGA section Thanksgiving clearance sale. Country club rep said no members had touched them all summer long, so he was unloading them.

Ping doesn’t make one for the iBlades and no set I have ever owned actually offers one stock, so at this point I’m just accustomed to a “specialty” gap wedge.

My fitter told me to go with vokey vs mizuno because the gap wedge wasn’t s hot metal pro...

I don’t really regret it... as the gap wedge would have been a weird outlier.

My current set is first with a U wedge at 50 deg. Prior set had 47 deg pw and I played a 54 and 58 mizuno S18. Current yardage gaps with new set were tricky at first but I like the added forgiveness of the U wedge and versatility around the green has been a welcomed surprise.
