Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

I haven’t played Fresh Meadows in years but I’ll still miss it. I remember playing a match against Proviso West there in ‘97. The week before we’d played Fenwick at Butterfield Country Club. The variety of high school golf was kind of funny at the time and hilarious in hindsight.

What school did you go to?  '97 would have been in my window being a 98 graduate.

Played with a Scott, but he wasn’t taking the picture

I'm guessing this is the same Scott I know - caddies at a club in Glen Ellyn?

St. Ignatius. Graduated in 2000. We didn’t play Proviso West very often. Usually played Catholic League teams with one or two non-conference.

My grandma has lived in her house in Westchester since the 50’s. Grandpa first took me to the fresh meadow driving range in high school, but never picked up golf then. If I could go back in time, I would have tried to go more and have him teach me at a younger age. Maybe I wouldn’t have picked up so many bad habits.

I think the practice area is privately owned by a group other than the Archdiocese. I know the course is church property though. So the range may live on. That clubhouse has been condemned off and on, which, in my view, added to the mystique. Pour one out for another dead course. Kinda funny that this one will now literally be home to dead people.

Mid week mental health day yesterday and played with the old guys at Coyote Run.  Went off totally cold, having not touched a club in 3 weeks, not a solitary swing on the range and not even a practice swing on the first tee.  Hmmm...13/14 fairways, maybe that needs to be the new approach.

Rained through the first hole and then it became a very nice day.  Started in rain paints, and ended in shorts. Started with a long sleeve compression shirt in addition to a polo and rain great, jettisoned that after 3. Apparently CR drains very well as the only area on the course where is was swampy was the 8th tee box which was a quagmire. The course is in very good shape, leaf management is working and the greens were the only thing impacted by the precipitation.  They were extremely slow and a couple of wedge approaches cratered.

Huge fan of fall golf as it was the perfect temp to walk.

Booked golf in AZ for late February and also looking at an exploratory trip to, The Villages in January. Been reading too much about the Villages not to at least take a look.

Played many rounds at CR, and yes, the drainage is excellent. The 8th teebox doesn't get much sun, and is usually a mess, along with the path to the green.

Most people there are more worried about alligators than crabs.

You’re not staying up to date on loofah codes in the Villages. That’s probably good for your own sanity, but feel free to Google that. Consider yourself warned. I wouldn’t do that search after a big meal.

LD, before I dive into what seems to be a perilous journey, from which I might not recover, you seem to be a font of info on The VIllages.  Care to share how you acquired your depth of knowledge?

Class of 99. Got me thinking about all the courses I played matches on that no longer exist. Timber Trails, Country Lakes, Maple Meadows East 9, Longwood, Pheasant Run, Gleneagles, Palos "Country Club" before it went from 18 holes to 9. Rumored to soon be joined by Silver Lake, Fresh Meadows and perhaps Willowcrest. Probably more that I've forgotten or don't even know have closed. Sad so many great memories that others won't get to have.

Yet somehow Palmyra and Columbus Park remain...

... Not sure without the sentimentality I really miss any of those with the exception of Country Lakes (for a change of pace) and especially Timber Trails. I really enjoyed playing TT.

Agreed, but high school golf matches were so much fun.

Timber Trails deserved a better fate. Such a beautiful old piece of property, I'm still stunned it's gone.

I’m sure Cog 1 and 3 and Big Run will also join the ranks of the sold. The first one that I recall being turned into homes was a par 3 course close to Timber Trails. With lake water distribution systems available that far out, the property is just too valuable to be a golf course.

Indian Lakes.

Surprised more haven't closed. Hickory Hills and Bloomingdale come to mind.

My parents’ next door neighbors moved to The Villages. They said pretty much every rumor people have heard about that place is correct.

I miss Indian Lakes, actually!  That being said, zero chance Bloomingdale closes.  You can't get a tee time there no matter the day and it is a municipal course.  Golf courses are loss leaders for local governments.
