Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Well I know I’m missing some halfway decent weather at home but I had to make do. I played Hapuna on the Big Island. Course was very nice. Pretty different playing on the grass and putting on the grass here. It was a gorgeous day and even with rentals I still managed to keep it under 90 by a few strokes.

Nice!  I played it with my wife’s late grandfather in 2014.  Arnold Palmer design.

played Mauna Kea twice on that trip, my only trip to the Big Island so far

I’m playing tomorrow. Sucks that the Bears already played. That usually keeps people off courses midday.

Couldn't imagine wanting to watch the bears instead of getting out on the course on a nice November day. People are crazy 😂. You 100% right though.

Really nice day. Played GCI this morning. It was playing somewhat firm, which is pretty amazing for November.

Was gonna play Redtail today but saw that their Fall rates disappeared and they were going to charge Bear and me $71. No thanks. Made the journey back to Oak Grove for the fifth time this year (what’s wrong with me?). $42 after 8:00 AM is a solid rate. OG was in better shape than usual. The sand was a mixed bag but the greens were okay. Not fast but smoother than I’m accustomed to. Some putts hit ball marks and popped up in the air, but Oak Grove is always gonna Oak Grove sometimes. Tough conditions today with pretty high winds and some gusts around 20-25 mph. I still had a lot of great birdie looks on 4, 5, 10, 12, and 16. Only got the one on 5 to drop though. Pretty happy with a 76 though. We’re basically getting October weather in November.

Cantigny for the 1st time yesterday.  With the wind howling that place is a brute.  They run a pretty impressive operation over there; will be back.

 

Sidenote, when looking for a time I stumbled upon Prairie Landing charging $110 for a November 12th round.  When did that joint turn into a $100+ round in November?  I do enjoy the course but can't see myself every spending that coin for a round there, even in the middle of the summer.

When I played there last Sunday we had booked Saturday morning. One of the guys we got paired with booked that evening and paid about the same as us. When he checked Sunday morning the price increased to over 100. Seems they're doing some sort of dynamic pricing model that changes with demand, or really sticking it to those impulse golfers late in season. But I do agree that pricing is ridiculous.

Cantigny is awesome, and weirdly moving from an expensive course to more reasonable.  As other courses have raised their rates pretty insane over the past few years, Cantigny has only slightly raised theirs.  I believe 10 years ago they were charging $115 and I think this past summer on a Saturday's it was running $135.

 

PL I've seen up to $120 this year in the summer, insane.  It is a great course, and over the last two years I don't think I've seen it in bad shape, which is saying something.

I guess I’m still missing some decent weather back home. I had to make do here on the Big Island. On the east side this week where the golf choices are slim. Basically Hilo municipal or the Volcano course by the nation park. We chose the Volcano course. We pull up the clubhouse was a trailer. Not a big deal we play Redtail a lot so kinda felt like home. The course has a very fun layout and with a little more love it would really be nice. That being said the greens looked a little rough but actually the ball rolled very well. The fairways were pretty wide and in good shape. Sandtraps and areas of the rough are part of what needed some love. We used rentals and they were nice. The irons were Titleist T300 and the guy said the Driver, woods and hybrid were from the same year. The big surprise was when I pulled out the putter it was a Scotty Cameron. All for $25. The weather, well we were in Hawaii but it felt like Scotland. Constant sideways rain with I guessing 30/40 mph gusts. Somehow we both shot below our scoring averages and had a blast. The people running the course were also very nice. Home next week.

Mistwood was in good condition yesterday. Was never my favorite course layout but hadn't been there for almost 10 yrs I'd say and was pleasantly surprised. Still think 15th needs work but not much more you do with the edge of an old quarry. Violent "breeze" coming out of the south most of the day so shots of the day were the tee shots on 11 and 12 playing from the blacks. 11 was 40yrds from the green and 12 was front edge. And that was about it. Greens were rolling too well and many 3-putts in our group.

last time I went on Thursday, they were pretty busy for mid-afternoon. bought four pair of shoes. .

lots of apparel.

worth a browse and there's a few good places to eat nearby.

 

though - their email says sale ended Nov 18 , so.............

Crystal Woods with Bear this morning. Possibly my last round before surgery. CW was my last round of the year last year too, so maybe that’s my new way to close out a season. I’ve only played there one other time but I like the layout. Lots of undulation on the greens, hillier topography than most courses in the area, solid greens where on can miss short but not right, and good risk/reward par 5’s. My ball striking wasn’t great but I had 3 birdies on 3, 4 and 13 for a 73.

I think today will bring an end to the Chicago golf season for me. Florida next week to keep it going. 
 

Finished with an 89 today, which is a net par for me. Previously, only scored sub 90 once, and that was 3 years ago in 2020. Today’s round marks my 6th sub 90 round of the year, with a personal best 83 earlier this year. Brought the index down from 20+ to my current low of 15.3. 
 

37 posted rounds on the year, probably around 45 total including non-posted rounds, scrambles, etc. 

 

Hoping to improve next year. Quick goals for next year:

7+ rounds under 90

2+ rounds 85 or under 

Index < 14.0

1+ rounds no double bogey or worse

Made par. Hit a drive just short and right of the bush. Then hit a 7 iron to about 6 feet (back pin). That green is nuts. Bear warned me, just putt straight cautious and make par.
