Socks

Recommended Posts

You guys like to spend a lot of money on socks, which is fine. But if you are looking for cheap, good performing socks I recommend Puma no-shows. They're thinner than FootJoys, but still have a little cushioning on the sole. Best of all, I bought them at Costco - 8 pairs for $9. I bought the ladies version since my feet are size 8, and they work great.

Not sure where you live or the conditions in which you normally play. I will say that when it is heat index of 100+ in the summer (90+ temp and 60+ humidity) that the basic Nike, UA, Puma socks are a long way behind Kentwool, Darn Tough, Bombas, etc.

I can walk 18 in Kentwool, with temps in the 90’s, wearing my golf shoes (waterproof means breathability is not ideal) and my feet are completely dry on the 18th green. This prevents blisters, nasty smelling shoes and I can just throw on my sneakers without getting them stinky/wet.

My go-to is Kentwool for the thickness. I also really like the Bombas Performance Running Sock. They fit perfectly within my Air Max 1's. I will only wear the Stance if I'm in a cart. They don't stay up for me. Same with Swiftwick Maxus zero. I have the ones without the tab, so maybe that's the problem. I've also bought and then donated Balega Hidden Comfort. Those were terrible. The only downside to Kentwool - they will shrink over time.

Also, blister prevention - two things. 1.) Get a stick of body glide and rub it on your Achilles area. 2.) Get the larger band-aids to cover that area and then put your sock over it. Be aware, if you get sweaty feet like I do that the bandaids won't stay on in the heat, especially if you walk.

I play in similar conditions in Solvang, CA. Yesterday it was mid-90s, not sure of humidity (<40%?), but still sticky with lots of bugs. Perfect day for the club championship, right? The Puma socks were fine, slightly damp after 18 walking. I'm not saying they are the best socks out there, but for the price they're tough to top. I'm open to trying the Kentwool socks, but I hesitate to pay $18-20 for one pair of socks.

Having been to Solvang many times, I can attest unequivocally that even the worst day in Solvang won't touch a summer day in the South. I live in Houston and an 85 degree (on the thermometer) day with 90% humidity feels exponentially worse than a 95 degree (on the thermometer) day in Solvang. From what I can tell from weatherspark.com, the average humidity level in Solvang peaks at about 30% during the summer. If you think Solvang is humid and sticky, don't ever visit a city in the South between March and November.

I've also been to the South during the months you cite, and I agree that the humidity is quite oppressive. I was in New Orleans and went for a run in the morning, 70 degrees and very high humidity - bad decision! The heat is different in Solvang. The humidity is lower but with clear skies it's like you are getting roasted on a spit when it's 95 degrees. High humidity is more like being steamed like a lobster. Neither situation is ideal, but it beats trying to play when it's cold and rainy.

I wear the Tab with my ecco Biom's and they are no show. the tab is just high enough to cover your achilles and not form a blister. For reference I wear the large size and my shoe is a 13.

I use "normal" Under Armor socks. If on your trip you begin to develop a hot spot (most likely from shoes), Duct Tape over the hot spot works great in a pinch. If not, moleskin or fabric athletic tape can help as well.
