Highest Lofted Wedge In Your Bag

cmrl1986

Recommended Posts

I and super confident with a Glide 3 54 / 12SS for a range of shots from 80 yards to green side. I have a 58 in the bag (Eye 2 Glide 3) - its appears to be toll of brilliance versus duff shots. I am thinking the one change to the bag over the winter will be to get a 56 SS wedge to use round the green. I have no doubt that I won't lose anything and I may well save some shots. I might need therapy to deal with the 2* gap though.....

58, mainly for bunker play.

I use 50, 54, and 58. It makes chipping and bunker play especially easy.

PW - 46, 52, 54, 60.

I don't buy into the whole argument of "an amateur should do this" narrative. I carry the 60* for 80 yards and in. I can get more work out of a 60* on elevated greens as well. In North Texas sometimes the greens can be very dry and it makes it hard to make a ball sit. With a higher trajectory and a soft landing I can help eliminate the spin.

46/50/54/58. I never got along with my 60, and I've found that my 58* can do everything I would want out of a 60*.

For me, it is 44, 50, 54, 58, 64. I use 64 for deep bunker shots, and quick short stop. Can do full, 3/4, 1/2 shots with all wedges except 64. Those complete my set but wished that we can use 15 clubs for tournaments. LOL

56 is my highest wedge. My PW (43) & GW (48) are from my set and I use that like standard irons. Thinking next year when I purchase new wedges I may switch from 43-48-52-56 to 43-48-54-58. At one time I had a 60 that I used all the time around the green and kind of miss it.

When I play 7 clubs, which is most of the time these days, the 54 is the highest (but for the Ping set may change the 54-14 to Ping Glide 3.0 Eye2 54-10). When I play 14 clubs, it depends on whether its Ping (G700) or Titleist (718 AP1) clubs and the course. With Ping clubs either 58 (Ping) or 62 (Vokey), but with Titleist clubs a 60.

For the 14-club golfing probably going to change the Ping from 58-14 to 58-6 and for the Titleist from 60-4 to 58-4 (or maybe not on this one), but if change from 7-club to 8-club golfing, the Ping to 60-6 and for the Titleists stay with the 60-4.

I'm torn, obviously. With 7-club golf need versatile bounce on the 54 (which I have with Titleist, but not with Ping), but with 8- or 14-club golf, high (or mid) bounce on 54 and low bounce on lob wedge.

But I need these brain teasers, costly as they may be. Might not help my game, of course, but such helps to hold off senility a bit longer, however, I think, I hope.

Anyone who says they have a club in their bag with more than 43* of loft that’s for ‘full shots only’ isn’t playing to their full potential. Wedge play is a skill. 3 or 4 clubs in that space of the bag should cover every single yardage from 135 and in. Everyone one. And every chip shop and every lie.

I have ‘X’ wedge for full shots only? That’s the tag line for the guy who isn’t as good a player as he or she could be.

So what do you consider a "wedge"? A 43 deg loft is a traditional 8 iron.

That’s kind of my point. I think the mark of a good player includes creativity and flexibility throughout the bag - especially at the 8/9 and below. For the guys I play with, those that ‘only use x wedge for full shots’ have a higher tendency to lay a lot of sod trying to hulk out a gap wedge than those that choke or finesse or P or even a 9 from 135 and in.

Agree. It doesn’t matter what’s written on the bottom of the club, choose the best club for any particular shot. Typically I don’t hit anything higher than a 50* as a full shot, but I would do if the shot demanded it.

Totally changed my wedge setup to cover the loft gaps with my new irons, Titleist T200's.

The T200 stock lofts with the 2 wedges are --- GAP wedge is 48* --- PW 43*..... For years Ive always played --- 58*, 54* & 52* to mate up to the PW.

With these modern STRONG lofted irons there was too much gap with the NOW need 4 wedges. So Ive gone with the Ping Glide 3.0 in 56* & 52*.... Bent the 52* to 51* & the Titleist 48* to 47*. Thought I would miss the 58* for the high lofted lob shots and bunker play. I dont!! I can lay open the 56* Ping and make it a 60* if need be.. Its working out great and the distance gap issues are NO MORE..
