Iron Set vs. Wedge PW

Why do some prefer replacing the Pw from their iron set? This seems trendy as of late and I just never understood the reasoning behind doing so. ex. nearly every titleist staffer plays a Vokey PW instead of the MB or T100/AP2

I did it years ago to look cooler with my 695CB/MB set. Ended up creating too much of a gap as the Vokey spun more and flew a shorter distance. I also have a full Cleveland wedge set 46-62, but it doesn't get used either. I don't flight those wedges and are 3/4 to full swing clubs 99% of the time (same as GW, which I also prefer for consisteny sake).

For vokey PW vs. MB PW, personally I see lower launch/ more spin from the Vokey. Similar total distance just a little different flight. Also more familiar for use around the green chipping, etc. That said, PW is more of a 10 iron for me. I don't use it much around the green or bunkers at all really. So I always go with the set PW.

I've stated this in other threads, as I play a specialty 46 and 50 wedge (Mizuno S-18) vs a set PW and GW. There are a bunch of reasons:

1) I feel like I have better distance and height control with the S-18s. While they may not go as far, I would rather the distances and heights be more consistent, vs. hitting them 5 yards farther.

2) The larger flange on the club protects me for digging, provided my swing uses the bounce correctly. Bounce has become my friend, and I've since lost the fear/concern of sculling it with these wedges.

3) (Stupid Reason) I like the fact that I am playing a non-chrome wedge (mine are black). Looks cool, and in VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES I don't get any sun glare. Now, if my irons were also dark finished, this point would be moot.

THIS, but 47* Wedge over a 10i.. This is how i always describe it. A 10i vs a Wedge. If you are a person who only carries two wedges (ie 54,60. or 52,58, or 54,58 or any of of the countess combos depending on gapping) then going with actual wedge can really add some shots into your arsenal. I think it is key to have the 46,47,48 whatever it may be shafted with the same shafts as your irons. Bc it is being hit on so many full shots, keep that consistency and add the versatility of an actual wedge over a 10i. Wedge specific shafts in gap/sand and lob

I think a lot of pros like their wedges to all look similar and the versatility/feel that a Vokey style PW can offer. I like the slight added forgiveness and only use a pw as a full or mostly full shot club so i go with a set pw. Its also likely that the specialty wedge gives them spin/flight characteristics that they prefer.

I simply like the way my 46-degree Vokey feels at impact and how easily it gets cleanly on the ball on fiddly little shots from the semi-rough around the green this time of year.

The 46-degree PW in my iron set is a perfectly good "10-iron" but not nearly as versatile.

I go with set PW and AW. Personally I am a longer hitter, my club is 7100 yards from the tips and I am driver and then generally 8 iron or less to the green. So I see the PW and AW as iron #10 and #11. They fly exactly how far I need them to. Plus, I can take 10-20 yards off each club no problem, so I very rarely if ever have a full swing with either of my specialty wedges.

I think it depends on how you plan on using the clubs and also what types of shots you generally face and are looking to hit.

I would suggest that "plain vanilla" wedge players - mainly hit square-face shots with swing length varied - are most likely to keep their iron set PW.

The pro I work with said he's seeing an increase in golfers ordering 4i-9i and going specialty on all wedges, including PW.

8de7cf99bdmy.png

Also, does the player consider the PW as a wedge, or more of a **10-iron**? Years ago I played the MacGregor MT irons, which terminated in a 10-iron rather than a true PW. The 10-iron was great for half or full shots, but tended to hang up or go thin on finesse shots around the green (not much wedge-style bounce). I ended up using a 7i or a MacGregor SW for most of the close-in finesse shots.

My mp63 set pw is 46 and that vs a 50 gap wedge gives me 15 more yards. Just bought a 52 Mizuno so may try 46 52 58

Agree with set PW. To me it’s a full shot club (or taking a bit off) - I’m not laying it open, changing ball position, or playing specialty shots with it, so bounce and grind aren’t things that matter all that much. 56 and 60 are the clubs I’ll play with around the greens, so all of those things then come into play.

Lowest loft I chip with is my 56. So PW is a full shit club for me. Can knock it down easily if needed

Same. My PW is from my iron set so I can take full swings with it. I do however game a 54* CBX for the exact same reason. Blade wedges and full swings are NOT a good combo for my golf abilities (or lack thereof).

I bounce (no pun intended) back and fourth. When playing my miuras it's the set PW (CB1008) putting a set of pxg 03x prototype in play 4-9 and Scratcb 1018 46/50/53(54)/58. Not sure if I'm going to match the 46 shaft with the irons or the rest of the wedges.

PW from set (P790) and separate 50 56 and 60* wedges. I never pitch or chip w a pitching wedge ironically. The 50 is my 100 yard club, 56 for pitches and chips, and 60 for the bunker.

Personally Vokey 46* for me, three reasons -

Mizuno PW normally look poop.

I use my 46* for bump and runs so make sense to be a pitching club.

I find(might be placebo)can flight and spin the ball more with a vokey vs set wedge which might be slightly longer but higher.
