Played a course recently with just the 3 wood, 2 hybrid, and 4-Pw and was able to break 80 due to the fact I avoided any big numbers that normally show up as a result of wayward drives.

Had a lot off problems over the years with the driver. Back when woods were made of wood , I used a 3 wood most of the time. And then things got better with the ball and got to use my driver again but then what did they do? Increase the length of the driver. So try a shorter driver, see if that helps.

Driver: Callaway Paradym 9 set to 10 Draw

5w Callaway Epic Flash

Putter: Odyssey Rossie Pro 2.0

I think it depends upon your goals and distance.

I hit it short. REALLY short. Hitting a shorter club really puts me in a bind distance wise so driver is the only way to go for me on most holes. If you hit it comfortably far enough with your 3 wood then why pull driver?

If you goal is to maximize your golfing talent then you need to learn to hit the driver consistently well at some point.

Imo anyone who can't hit 3 wood more than 230 yards total shouldn't be taking their driver out of their bag. If you can't hit the driver, it's a swing issue or a club issue. Either needs to be addressed as these days the driver is arguably the most important club in the bag.

I would recommend everyone thinking about taking it out have some lessons on driver and/or get fitted for a shorter, higher lofted one - you will want the extra 20 yards unless you plan on laying up to par 4's and trusting 1 putts for pars.

Take a look at the Callaway Flash 3+ wood if you are thinking of using it primarily as a driver replacement. When my driver is misbehaving, I swap it out for this bomber. I also carry a 4 wood that is 17*. That 4* difference works great for launching balls high and long from the fairway, a great combo.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of a 17 degree hybrid as a compliment hoping to be able to stop the ball on the green. Are you able to stop the ball on the green with the 4 wood?

My best rounds have come when I didn't need driver at all (tho only like 6300ish yard courses) as I was in the fairway and in play far more, which led to less scrambling and wasted shots. When playing/practicing the most (5 capper) I considered myself a low single digit putter and bunker player, single digit ball striker and short game and a 25 handicap driver of the ball...

There was a time back in college years ago I dropped my driver for my 3W (14.5*). I was hitting the 3W 290-310 off the tee and it was a lot more predictable so it wasn't that big of deal to not use the driver at the time. I think with the shaft being shorter and higher loft I was able to workout whatever issue I was having at the time. That being said, I think working on setup and tempo you'll work it out. Try choking down a little on the driver and setting it at a higher loft if you are able.
