PXG laying off workers... Any credible information? (Merged)

PXG from a cultural standpoint reminds me of "new" money in an "old" money golf world. Where PXG has stepped on a lot of toes is they went right for the high end market without putting time and effort into courting everyday golfers. Remember though this is a hobby business and only answers to its owner who by many accounts is a little eccentric with an out sized personality. As to their clubs I have hit a few of their irons on the range from sets of guys I know in my casual golf group and they are nice sticks. I am not PXG's target customer but their stuff is fitted which is probably the most important thing for the player. I don't think I have played with anyone who beat me yet with a set of their clubs so the clubs have their limits. At the high end market clubs are a matter of taste, like expensive wine, cigars, cars etc. The brashness of PXG (see comment from chisag) is what is off putting for a lot of people.

But I have never seen _**class**_ promoted with such _**crass**_. Bob Parsons may be a great guy, but his TV ego is completely out of control and his commercials remind me of the very guy I never want to run into on a golf course. Loud, pompous and elitist. The kind of golfer that plays music others don't like at a very LOUD level with their cart speaker, doesn't repair ball marks or divots and takes the cart right next to the green and a few feet off the tee box saving 3 steps and killing the grass. Whether or not any of the above is true, this is what his commercials conjures up in my mind. Can anyone really imagine a Mercedes or Bentley commercial in the same style?

it's called marketing and it's working because people are talking about it whether they like it or not...

Really wow should do really well and yeah they keep opening retail locations so if they were struggling dont think this would be the case. Twin Cities has the most golfers per capita of any city in the US from what Ive read. Great move on their part and now have something else to do In MPLS other than Mall of America haha

I respect your thoughts and you know of what you speak from seeing your posts in the past on GEA. I agree with the Kaboom Baby being childish and best golf clubs made.Period. Youd think he'd know that could possibly turn off his target market. Should just do testomonials in commericals or talk up Heroes program.

Its just what you value versus what you do not value. I'm not making a judgment (AGAIN, I am not giving my own opinion here) but PXG is Bob Parsons and Bob Parsons is PXG.

On the one hand, he supports the troops / first-responders. That resonates positively with a certain crowd.

On the other hand, he is an on-record extreme misogynist whose commercials some would find pretty distasteful. The resonates negatively with a different crowd.

On the third hand, there are people who are straight-up jelly, because the equipment is really good.

It is difficult to explain to someone who is not in the Armed Services what is heroic about spending four years making $40k/year in the mess hall at Fort Bragg and the closest you come to risking your life is driving across the base in a golf cart. There are also heroes who are actual heroes. "I was in the army or police somewhere at some point" = "I'm a hero" doesn't resonate as well with some as with others.

It is difficult to explain to someone who is in the "PC has run amok!!" crowd why putting a very accomplished female on an advertisement for her looks and not her incredible accomplishments is demeaning.

Neither group will ever understand the other one. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

But that is why he is so polarizing. Love him or hate him, he speaks to some of the deep-rooted beliefs of many be it good or ill.

  • 1 month later...

the two companies I’ve worked for in my industry (aerospace) do the same end of year things. First company had reviews done by end of November and lowest 5% were gone unless it was a hard position to fill. Other company was right sizing to get the books squared for the next year.

stinks indeed but I feel like the winter time before the new year is commonplace

I work in oil and gas, it’s an annual/semi-annual thing with layoffs. Tends to make me numb to others talking about layoffs because it’s so common place in my industry.

This thread's been hanging around a while...does anyone know how many people were actually laid off and what percentage of staff it was? There's a lot of posturing about their business model and the market and etc etc....is it possible this was just a company laying off a few people, which literally every company does from time to time?

Pinestreet's post above was very good, PXG definitely generates a strong reaction. I get it though because its probably the reaction Parsons wants to be honest. There was a guy on this board who used to post a lot about PXG and openly said a primary reason he bought the clubs to take pride in owning things other people couldn't....i remember thinking that was the perfect PXG customer. Like it or not that's probably how many see the brand. Again some brands WANT that

I know I'm late to reply to this but I look at it the other way. They came into the market with a high priced product that seems untouchable to many who can't afford them. This makes the brand desirable and peaks interest as to how good they must be at this premium of a price point. Now they come to the market with a "more affordable" 0211 set that more people can afford. Now, the consumer can get a piece of this luxury brand without breaking the bank.

I know the comparison is used a lot, but think of car companies. I will use BMW for example. 20 years ago, it was a luxury brand that wasn't affordable by most. In the small town I grew up in, I can probably count on one hand how many people had a BMW. Now, they have some many different models that they are affordable for most people looking for a new car if they want an entry level.

BMW's are not affordable for most people looking for an entry level car. An entry level BMW is double the average income in the US.
