3 and 4 hybrids or 5-7 fairway woods

I've tried both combos you mention and prefer a 5-7WD setup. Hybrids "work" fine but I prefer the FW's and they work just fine for me out of the rough. I alternate the 4-iron and 7WD depending on the conditions.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I like 3 and 4 hybrids over the 5-7wd set up.

I carry the 3 HYB around 195-200, the 4 goes 180-185 carry. These are pretty close to what I used to hit my 3 and 4 irons, but I'm much more consistent with the HYBs

I hit the 5wd around 200-205, but I can get the same out of the 3HYB.

I hit moon balls with every 7wd I've ever tried....useless tool for my game.

I play a 17* 4wood instead of a 3wood as well.

I've personally found 5w's can go a little too far when the next club is a 4i. My 19* 5w can travel out to about 240, but my 4i is usually my 210 yard club. I find a 3h a little bit better when it comes to gapping. Another option could be to tinker with a 5w a little bit by maybe cutting it down and setting the loft up to 20* or so... essentially add some spin and reduce the ball speed just a touch.

I'm actually trying to do this now myself. I have a 2017 M1 5w head and it's just too hot. Thing is an absolute unit and sometimes off the tee it can roll out to like 250, which is just too long. It's also a little touch too low launch for me, even at 19*. I'm going to try playing it down to a hybrid length of 40.5'', loft it up to 20*, move the weight out near the toe and possibly even add some hotmelt into the very back of the head.

Another option is just picking a higher spinning head design, maybe like F9 or G410. If what I do by cutting the M1 down doesn't work well for whatever reason, I plan to pick up the F9 5-6w, or a TS2 5w.

Hybrids or higher-lofted FWs? It depends on which you hit best.

A couple of things to consider when ranging, or gapping, the bridge clubs:

How far a hybrid carries depends in part on whether it is a _traditional_ or an _iron-replacement_ hybrid. A traditional has shaft length between the FWs and the long irons. My FlyZ hybrids are traditional - about an inch longer in shaft than the irons they would likely replace.

An iron-replacement, however, generally is designed to blend in with a model of irons - or in case of Mizuno FLI-HI multiple models. So, an IR will have about the same shaft length and loft of the long iron it is supposed to replace.

Second, a golfer who mixes brands and models in his bridge clubs can't really make guesses on how far the ball will fly. He has to do side-by-sides to see the real numbers.

In my case, the 7W pretty much matches the distance of the 3H. I have been 4W + 7w for the past eight seasons, with indecision on whether to go with 4H or 4i. (Since I went down to three wedges, I carry both).

Also... if the 4i is good off the tee but iffy off fairway, consider softstepping the shaft, or going with a lighter flex shaft to improve launch. See below, my 4i now has a hybrid shaft in it.

I hit a 5w higher than 3h

7w has more stopping power on greens than 4h

I can definitely hit a 5w farther carry wise than 3h

I use my 3h for putting off the green quite a bit

Wind? I'm using hybrids all day long

Tricking course off tee- I'll carry hybrids

Course with long par 3's - hybrids

Bunkers fronting most greens - 5w /7w

9 Clubs Sunday Bag

Came up against it earlier this week. 2nd Into a par 5 Into little wind, 235 to pin, 220 forced carry. Brought his 17* hybrid instead of his 19* 5 wood. Came in short but carried. Had he had the 5 wood, he’d have made it onto the green. Had to chop out of tule weeds. So, bring 21* hybrid or DI and a 5 wood.

I love the 4 wood / 7 wood combo. The 7 wood is my favorite club. But 3 wood / 7 wood would work fine if you can just take little off your 3 wood on the in-between distances.

My next club is a 5 iron, but it's a P790 at 23.5 degrees, so effectively a 4 iron. Hybrids for me always go left. I am much more consistent with the 7W and can do a lot with it. Great club out of the rough. I can dial the distance down to play it anywhere form 195-235. Easy to shape. Unbeatable hitting into greens. Can't flight it particularly well, which is the only drawback with a 7W but no biggie.

Spend a range session bashing about a dozen 3 irons and hybrids and then switch to the 7 wood. You'll never go back. It's hard to appreciate just how much easier and consistent it is until you compare directly.

All the talk about how far each 7 wood goes depends not on the 7 but the loft of the 7. I have a seven wood that is 22* and plays as a 4 iron distance. Then again I have a 7 wood that is 20.5* and can be adjusted to 19* and has the same loft as my 5 wood. Now it plays as a 3 iron.

You have to match your lofts to the gaps. Not the number on the bottom of the head.
