Cobra SpeedZone driver, SpeedZone Xtreme driver (in-hand photos)

Recommended Posts

I got a chance to hit Speedzone tonight during my practice session.

My numbers on a GCHawk are as follows to give you an idea of where I'm coming from. I play a 9* F9 set at 8* with a 14g weight up front and 10g in the back. Tour AD TP7-S at 44.5".

CHS: 100 mph, AoA: 1.5* up, Ballspeed: 146 mph, Launch: 12.5*, Spin: 2300 rpm, Carry: 245 yards, Total: 272 yards

My first trial was with the 10.5* SZ set to 9*. Yeah, this head is not for me. Average spin was 4500+. Carry was 215 to 220 with the longest total of 230 I think. I was keeping track of face contact and there were all pretty much middle or just toe side an most importantly all at or above the center line so low contact wasn't the issue.

I swapped in the 9* SZ and and boom. No dots on the clubhead so I can't give detailed numbers but the ballspeed and launch numbers were just like what I see with the F9. Note that this was with the standard weights.

From a looks perspective, the SZ is much cleaner looking at address. The infinity face coming over the top edge really looks good and it sets up much more square looking than the F9.

I was fit into the SpeedZone at club champion. Diamana DF 60 gram stiff shaft, stock length D6 swing weight. The dispersion on this driver head was much tighter than anything else I tested and I hit pretty much all of them other than the new Mizuno's. I also had the fastest ball speeds with it.

As you can see by the pics on page 3, it arrived. So I headed to my usual sim last night to test it. It sits square and I love that. I was worried about the wrap around face as I did not like the pics I had seen, but in person, its looks awesome. I went with the white model as I like the matte finish. The lip never caught on the mat at all and it does sit under the rest of the driver slightly so I cant see this being an issue for me. I do drag the club rather than hovering.

This shaft is SMOOTH!!! It gives me confidence that I can really unload as much as I want and still keep it under control. The best feeling driver shaft I have ever used.

The sound is perfect. Very similar to my ST190 and I thought that driver had the perfect sound. It just sounds fast.

Dispersion. Yeah, this is the best part. I play on that sim about 4 times a week during winter. Never seen dispersion that tight. Never. I am a high toe guy but can miss low too. Blown away by the dispersion.

Ball speed, the fastest I have ever seen on this sim was 161.7mph. I beat that several times last night and my fastest was 163.7mph. My guess would be that I averaged 5mph faster ball speeds over my triple diamond SZ. A low strike was 156mph. I thought that was very good for a mishit.

Launch seemed to be a little higher than my TD SZ. Might have just been me that day, not sure. Spin was slightly higher due to that. I will test this on my buddies GC2HMT to compare. I am usually around 3-4 up.

Stability seems to be a hot word these days. It was very hard for me to call strike location because of how "stable" this driver was. The sound is a little different when you catch it low so I started getting in tune with that but there was zero twisting on mishits.

It could be the infatuation stage as I am a club ho but I told my buddies that this is the best golf club I have ever bought. I am heading to Florida in a week for a week of golf so that will be the real test. I will do a follow up after I get back.

I got fit for and preordered a white and black speedzone tour length with a small batch hzrdus smoke green about a week before it launched and I am still waiting. Keep hearing another week. First was they had issues getting the shaft, then it was the adapter, and the whole time I've been seeing the head is on backorder so I have no clue what to believe.

Nice pics. I would put the cobra as the number two driver this year so far. At least for me. I liked it better than the Mav, and I like it much more than the F9. I think the mizuno may be very good too. Even so, the mizzy will not be a big seller.

I really like the Cobra though. It’s good.

I played the ST190 last season and loved it. Really wanted to test the mizuno but they did not have it. I played at a outdoor range today with heated bays. This driver is just incredible. My buddy could not believe the dispersion. He could tell by the flight it was going to be longer. Can’t wait for Florida!!

Had a chance to hit the SZ Extreme today.

9* model, loft turned down to 8* which is my standard setup. The Extreme is definitely more spinny than the non-Extreme. Presumably because of the rearward weight bias. Spin was averaging above 3500 RPM so the Extreme is definitely not for me.

Looks like I will be getting the regular SZ once the trade-in event arrives.

I think I've read the Xtreme weighs close to the standard Speedzone but not sure, if that's the case it'd be lighter than the g400 Max if memory serves.

TXG guys call the Xtreme a lower spinning G400 Max which is high praise

i checked one out today and did not like how it looked at address... though the crown was too shiny and didn’t love the bulges... I’m sure it’s a bomber, but I really didn’t like the optics of it (but I also didn’t love the speed zone).

i love my Ltd pro... subtle checkerboard pattern at the right angle makes me feel like I’m getting the finishing flag of a race.

oh well.
