I agree with the premise that Haney's main fault was being ignorant and tone deaf. However, to make the statement that Asians have similar surnames sort of falls into the same category (albeit less so). SOME Asian ethnicities/cultures have very common/repeated surnames (Chinese and Korean for example), some have dramatically unique surnames. The issue with such stereotyping (and why some in these groups get offended, particularly by Haney's comments) is you are basically saying the individuals of the group are not important, since you have not taken the time to learn to how to differentiate them. That is not a comment directed at you, just those who echo these statements in general and then wonder why some get offended, and then write it off as them just being sensitive, and ultimately refuse to change their stance (which is exactly what Haney did IMO)

I get this is largely part of human nature and not at all unique to any one racial group (some of the most Xenophobic people you will encounter are Asian), but I think the modern world were we can access information and other cultures instantaneously, there just isn't an excuse for such mindsets to persist.

Lee6 in fact won the tournament. Ironic. The LPGA is in no way related to the PGA Tour. PGA Tour may have overstepped, depending on their input on talent on Sirius/XM.

His comments were way overblown. They may of been a little tone deaf and comes off not into following the LPGA, but not grounds for the penalties he got. A public apology should have been enough to smooth things over.

Also, the name Lee can be Asian (Chinese, Korean, etc), Caucasian, or African-American. Disclaimer: I am Asian, named Lee, and not the least bit offended at what he said. Lol. He was completely right on his prediction. A Korean named Lee#6 won the LPGA US Open. Gotta like that.

I see the references to what he said about predicting a winner. Is that what this is about? Interesting. I remember hearing his comments and thinking, "Well, maybe that's stupid. But, everybody has a right to be stupid." Get stupid enough and you cause your own damages. Rings a little of the Kaep kneeling gripes from the once-revered QB. Yep, but LPGA and Tour have an agreement as of a few years ago, but don't think the LPGA is a subsidiary in any sense. Just preaching caution on that part.

PGA Tour may try to be big on the quiet, but not on the go away - expect it to be defended pretty vigorously as the Tour usually does (unless there is a smoking driver out there somewhere).

Don't think there is anywhere near enough info for a "take" at this point - other than in several months there may be more news.

You just quoted a tv commercial from the 80’s and actually thought it was clever. I’m embarrassed for you too. I’m embarrassed for the other guy because he read Hank’s obviously racist comment and claimed he couldn’t find the racism. Hank could’ve compared reading the leaderboard at an LPGA event to the sound silverware makes when it’s dropped on the floor and that guy would say it’s not racist.

You embarrass easily. I have never been the biggest Haney fan but since my job keeps me planted in my vehicle for long periods of time I listened to him everyday. I remember the day that show was on. Hank always thought he was funnier than what he was but having spent several years in Asia and having many Asian friends I never thought what he said would get him kicked off the air. I lived in South Korea for two years and even the Korean's would joke about everybody being either a Kim or Lee. People really need to chill out and get over themselves. I guess I should be more offended when someone says something about Old, short, chubby white dudes.

That’s the thing, man. Asians can make fun of their names, and you and I can make fun of short chubby white dudes. Why? Because they’re Asian and we’re short chubby white dudes. However, the converse is racist, or in our case, prejudiced against short chubby white dudes. It’s pretty simple to deduce. I’ve always chuckled a little condescendingly when people complain about political correctness. Usually it’s white guys who are irritated because they can’t sling racial or sexist slurs around out loud at the company party like they could in 1953.

As much as I hate defending Haney you'd have to be real thin skinned to take his statement as racist. More than likely they didn't listen to the entire program either because most of the topic that day was about how Asian women dominate the LPGA tour. I'm pretty sure he was correct about everything he said during the show. Was it in poor taste? Maybe. Should he have lost his gig? No way. My energy talking about Hank is now gone. I'll move along.
