Looking for recommendations for new irons for a casual golfer

I was hoping to get some advice here from the forum. I am a casual golfer, with an easy going (slower) swing speed. I typically shoot 95 - 105 most of the time, and I've been golfing for 10 years. However, I haven't paid much attention to the tech or brands so I'm not sure what the latest or greatest is. I know I'm not good enough for blades, I'm just looking for a good set of forgivable irons that are for easy going guys like me trying to up their game. Thanks!

A ton of options for you fortunately! So many good game improvement and super game improvement options out there for you.

Super Game Improvement: Cobra F-Max Superlite, Callaway Rogue XGame Improvement: Mizuno 919 Hotmetal, Callaway Rogue, Ping G410If you are looking to save some cash, used clubs are a good way to go as well - lots op options on ebay for what you are looking for.

A couple of thoughts:

slower swing speed, may want to consider graphite shaftsget a regular flex or sr flex shaft if you indeed have a slower swing speed get irons with enough forgiveness - don't shy away from the SGI and GI (Super Game Improvement and Game Improvement) options

My current irons are the Ping Rapture from way back when!

I second the G410 recommendation. Just set the FIL up with a set last week and they have been great. Especially the fact that he can get them up in the air easier. He tends to hit the irons lower, and he loves being able to shoot at pins and hold the green.

You may want to check out Callaway too then. They have some new iron releases with built in technology such as tungsten and VFT.

I like how Ping and Callaway are gapping or blending mid and single handicap irons closer.

I switched over from Callaway Alex MB to Ping i210 (3-PW) because of the soft feel and forgiveness.

Added the G410 Crossover/UDI 17*, so easy to hit that I got the 20* and 23* on it’s way. I’ll take the added height and easiness.

I'd recommend the Callaway apex irons. They're good enough to hang with you if you start playing more but are still very forgiving. Pings are also nice especially if you need something other than standard specs and don't want to do a full fitting, since they offer clubs in varying lie/length configurations based on your measurements.

Any of the Ping "G" series would be fine. You can go back to the G5 and not lose much, and they are indestructible.

Ping is always a good answer... if you are price conscious but still want new, sub70 makes competitive stuff.

really it depends on what you need... the new distance category is helpful if your swing is slower, but can cause issues with faster, inconsistent swings...

any cavity back iron should be playable at your level... assuming you have enough strength and speed to drive through the ball.

Those are excellent irons, I actually still game them.

I'm not sure if the current tech irons are going to be much, if any, more forgiving then the Raptures. Longer yes.

You could get a fitting on a used driver, possibly Callaway Rogue or Cobra. If you get a used driver the shop would charge you for a fitting, but it would still be less than an brand new model. Plus, a driver fitting can give you clues to your overall swing characteristics. For Ping, a G30 or G model driver might be good to look at.

In your case, do not go the eBay route. You don't know enough about equipment at this stage to make a good eBay selection. You could easily waste an entire season doing hit and miss trials of different drivers. Remember, you don't get to hit the clubs before you buy on eBay.

For the short run you could keep playing your Ping Raptures. Try out different newer irons to narrow down your short list for fittings. In the Ping kingdom, the G400 and G410 are their "middle earth" irons.

Playable look, size, sole, and spin, with crazy forgiveness.

My buddy had a set, and while they don’t suit my needs (I’m a low handicap with very high swing speed, high launch, and mid spin), I think they will fit any casual golfer who wants pure enjoyment.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'm going to get fitted soon and will try the Callaway's (I think the new Mavrik's replaced the Rogues?), Ping's and Mizuno's (I have always heard these are unique and hard to hit).

Maltby Ts-2 all day long...all the modern tech, 1/3 the price. Feel and sound is amazing. you won't be disappointed...type in "maltby ts2" in the search on this site and prepare to spend the next 4 hrs reading through that thread...then decide if you want to go OEM or not.

seriously, these clubs are amazing, and budget friendly and they are as good as or better than any OEM out there. unless you just love a specific brand...super forgiving, but not Game improvement-y (especially the TS1s)

I tell any of my friends that ask this to try the Ping G series. If they're cost conscious I tell them to find a previous G series model or a used G series set.

95-105, easy. Launcher HB irons or HB Turbos. Some have been happy with the T-rails.

Callaway PreOwned, many models, CB, even "Pro" model CBs, it that's your thing. Good value and most are super forgiving, haven't met anyone who plays Cally irons (especially mid-high HDCPs) who don't like theirs.

As has been said a few times already , Ping is awesome.

Their G irons may be too large looking for some, but the Ping I series is probably the iron set that fits the widest swath of players and best combines play-ability and forgiveness. Used everywhere from on tour to in the bags of 20 indexes

Definitely look into a used set. Callaway certifies preowned is having a sale currently. 2ndswing.com is another good place to look.

I would never tell someone to NOT go golf club shopping, but if you get along with your raptures, I don't have a good reason to change away from them other than "because you want to," which is a perfectly good reason. You may be able to optimize shaft selection with a new set if the shaft of your raptures doesn't fit your swing, so that could be something to consider.
