Jim McLean is my favorite instructor...

Maclean was great because he didn’t believe in completely rebuilding everyone into an automaton...

I had no idea. It trying to find out details I read this: https://vault.si.com/vault/1995/10/30/the-tours-secret-police

Apparently Patrick Reed exists in all timelines:

And, of course, there's the old ploy of a player hitting a tee

shot into the rough and then pressing his driver behind the ball

before selecting another club with which to play the shot. A

story often told on Tour involves a player who was in the rough

addressing his ball with a four-wood for what seemed like

forever. Finally, his caddie asked, "Is that a four-wood shot?"

The player, tamping down hard, answered under his breath, "Not

yet."

When I first started playing this game seriously I bought The Touch System book by Toski (1971.) I thought it was very helpful. He was one of the leading instructors at the time. At his age he’s free to give whatever opinion he wishes.

So much respect for Toski, at 93, one of the last guys around from Hogan, Snead, etc... primes.

However he said that:"Dustin Johnson is going to have arthritis before he is 50, the way he shuts the clubface at the top. Hogan said you never see a good player with a closed face. And the kid Matthew Wolff - that swing won't last"

I think he is wrong and probably would have said the same thing about Jim Furyk 25 years ago. The thing is though he doesn't have to worry about being right or wrong because when Dustin is 50 or Wolff is even 35, he won't be around. to be proven wrong.

There are many ways to swing a club and I don't think everyone should be pigeon-holed into some textbook swing.

All due respect to Toski, but what the hell does shutting the club face have to do with arthritis?

Absolutely nothing. On the backswing Hogan rolled his wrists to avoid his dreaded hook. Then came thru the ball hard.In effect Hogan introduced a closed face.

Its not the shutting of the clubface but rather his mechanics in doing it. Look at the wrist position. He's already had issues with it so yes, it would not be a surprise if he has arthritis wrist issues later.

Funny how people are so touchy about the bowed wrist thing.  Or were when it was a fad.

Leo Diegel played with a bowed left wrist.  One of the best players (Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead?) commented that he was a very good iron players, but somewhat erratic off the tee.  So there is that.

By the way, Ben Hogan rolled his wrists so that there was a cup in his left wrist, which served to open the club face.  Fact.  One of his "secrets."

I just can't get my wrist to bend the way DJ's does at the top.  It hurts.  I don't think mechanically my joint has that freedom in that position.

I think most people would look at my position at the top and say it has too much flex (concave not convex - I don't speak supinate pronate enough to know which is which but one of them is the correct term) at  the top.  Perhaps that is part of my inconsistency with iron direction at times?  When I have been playing regularly it is generally not an issue though.  I get pretty accurate for my handicap.  I have played more in the last month and the cap has dropped 3.5 strokes.  I am flirting with single digits now so no complaints on my end.

How did he hit a persimmon wood with a closed club face? DJ would have been just fine and people would talk about how great he is off the tee from length and distance.

There's footage online of DJ hitting an old persimmon wood about 300 yards with a fairly leisurely waft. I reckon he'd have been alright.

But that was with a modern ball, no?  Would like to see a balata ball with those clubs.  And he might be able to replicate, as it wasn't out of the question for big hitters to go that far, but not nearly as consistently.
