New Trend - drivers with Low loft ?

I just Saw that Morikawa is gaming an 8 degrees TM driver and the new powerhitter is gaming an 7,5 degrees Cobra King driver.

does any of you use a Low lofted driver ?

does it reduce control a lot ?

Down to the individual. Lofts on tour would range somewhere from 6ish to 12 ish degrees.

BTW, Bryson is at 5.5, Morikawa is at 9.5

In witb Bryson is notes at 7,5 and Morikawa is notes at 8.0.

I play a 6 degree, but it’s only because I add a lot of loft at impact. I think it ends up being about 9-10* total so I don’t see any loss of control versus when I played a 10 degree. Maybe if you were trying to swing flat or 1 degree up it might get squirrelly

Bryson has a 7.5* that he cranks down to 5.5* which is kind of crazy, but he's a beast now. Morikawa has an 8.0* that he has dialed up to 9.5*.

I used to have a 10.5* driver that I kept adjusting down, for awhile below 9* because my flight was too high. Now I game a 9.5* that I'm considering cranking down a notch or two.

I'm not particularly fast or strong, I think it's just the way that I make contact needs less loft, otherwise the ball just sails upward.

I play an M5 turned all the way down, have hit the SIM 8* turned all the way down as well. Like the comment above, I add loft at impact along with an A0A between 4-5 up. I don't feel I lose any control at all, but it keeps my spin in a reasonable range.

Personally I like about 8 degrees other wise I get zero roll out and balloon into the wind.

I'm the same. 8.5 to 8 actually gets me rollout. 9.5 I carry the farthest but it stops right away.

In general, ever since the solid core ball was the norm, the trend was drivers having higher degree lofts for the high launch and low spin for most players. People with low lofted drivers have either a crazy swing speed (125+ MPH) that imparts a lot of spin and/or have a very upward attack angle. Most golfers with swing speeds under 100 MPH need more spin to keep the ball the in air.

IDK what my numbers are. I hit a nice mid flight draw with an 8.5º Titleist 915 set at C1. (7.75). I use a lightweight 50g shaft in S flex.

No trend for me. I used to hit a 975d in 8.5º. I've hit 8.5º drivers forever.

I play an M1 at 7.5 degrees. Performs really well for me. No complaints.

I think it depends on the head. I can easily hit a low-lofted Ping driver because they seem to launch higher. Same with Srixon. So I’ll go with 9 degree heads in those and even dial it down and confirmed this was best in fittings. In other heads, such as TM M6, the 10.5 fit me better. These were all with swings in the 103-105 range.

I have access to a Great Big bertha 7,5 degrees.

would this driver be much shorter ( length of drive )

conpared to new drivers ?

then i would reshaft it with a new quality shaft.

No. That head can hang with the best of them. Performance of a given loft setting will depend on your swing and delivery and a shaft setup fit to you.

Haha if your talking about the OG Great Big Bertha that head will now at all hang with new drivers. I still have mine from HS and take it out from time to time. It’s a good 20+yds short on the best of drives and forgiveness is almost non existent compared to new drivers.

Many years ago, when I was getting serious about golf after taking it up again in my early 20's, I had an 8.5 Titleist 905T. To this day I think I hit some of my longest drives with it. But I was young, fit, strong, flexible... After that I moved on to a 7 degree Bang (or Krank? it was a long time ago!) head and I could hit it just fine. Long, straight, fun. I didn't use it much because it put me out of position when I played, and I'd rather have a full pitching wedge in on a par 4 rather than a partial 52. The 905T was in the bag most often unless it were a windy day. I then had an 8.5 Cobra L4VX, then an 8.5 (I think?) degree Adams head for a long time and loved it. I think my driver head speed was somewhere between 112mph and 123mph during this stage. No trouble with launch, spin, control, etc. I think the L4V is up there with the 905T for me, as "best of the best."

I recently broke my Adams driver and was fitted for a Titleist TS2, 9.5 knocked down .75. It works for me - while I'm still in my 30's I've lost a bunch of speed due to non-golf related shoulder and back issues. I'm down to 111mph and could probably get away with a more forgiving loft but I really like the launch I'm familiar with. I still get the ball pretty high into the air, but if I'm having a bad day... well, it's pretty funny how high it can go. I'll happily play whatever loft/flex/length/etc that works best (or inspires the most confidence, which is kinda similar) rather than chase whatever suits my ego.

Anyway, I was never a particularly good golfer with any of the speed and nor am I now. Actually, I think I'm a better player now but I'm not as fast - so I score about the same now as I used to, but in a very different way.

Me too. I was playing a R5 10.5* and I kept complaining to an instructor about my ballooning drives. He recommended a shaft change, but knew that is an expensive trial and error proposition. Quick fix: I bought a Diablo 8.5*. Instantly started carrying 30 yards farther with a more penetrating trajectory. I know I hit the ball with a downward AoA, but it is what it is. The launch monitor showed the R5 was putting 6000 RPM on the ball.

Some times a quick equipment adjustment to me makes sense, if the rest of your game is working trying to adjust how you hit the driver might have repercussions through the rest of your game.

My instructor said the same thing. Unless I played more and did range work to correct my AoA, just live with it and play decent golf. I do have to be careful with ball position as if it gets closer to center, I can end up putting an overcooked draw spin on the ball from path.

Callaway were the originators of loft inflation. That 7.5* GBB is probably 9* or 10*, if not more.

I Will start out by dialing My 913 D2 ( 9,5 degrees ) Down by 0,75 degrees to 8,75 degrees.

Interested on this topic. My ss is about 111-113, AoA about +2/+3, dynamic loft at impact usually between 13-16, launch angle 12-15. im currently playing a 9degree head and wondering if I’d get more out of an 8degree head

My M5 Tour was ordered by my fitter at 7 degrees with the Shaft labels down. Once it arrived, I hit the launch monitor again to check the weights and haven’t touched it in over a year. I can’t hit anything with much more loft than that due to spin rates going up. I’m reminded of that every time I get fit.
