P770’s Have Arrived!

I got mine this week and have 1 round and probably 500 range balls off of them.

Mine are shafted with SteelFiber 95gm shafts.  I was gaming the Bridgestone J15 CB's with Recoil 110 F4 shafts and before that I played the original P770's for many rounds.

I won't pretend to have come to a long term decision, but I have already decided to game them in my club championship in 2 weeks.  I will give my thoughts so far between those 3 sets:

1. FEEL: On perfectly flushed shots, the J15 CB's are the softest and the original 770's would come in second in this category.  On slight mis-hits, the J15's are still the softest but the new 770 surpasses the original.  You can tell where you miss all three, and none are harsh when telling you.

2. DISTANCE: On flushed short irons, the new P770 is a few yards longer, but nothing huge.  On the long irons this stretches out a little more.  Definitely noticable, but not like a full club difference.  On slight mishits, the new P770 keeps more distance than the other two.  I have been swinging my irons well, so I really don't know what I will get with really poor strikes but I don't expect much on those from any club.

3. DISPERSION: This is what has jumped out at me.  I am impressed up to this point.  In my limited time with them, I can give first place to the new P770.  Honeymoon??

4. TRAJECTORY:  The new P770 launches the highest of the three.  No ballooning, just high.  I would not be choosing a shaft with high launch to pair with these.

5. SPIN:  I have not been on a monitor with them, but they certainly held greens.  I was not zipping anything back, instead they were just stopping on the greens pretty much exactly where they hit.  I had a couple that may have backed up a few feet, and a couple that may have released a few feet.  In all, perfect in this respect.  They held comparably to the original 770, and bit a little quicker than the Bridgestone J15's.

6. WORKABILITY:  If you like to move the ball a lot, I would look elsewhere.  You can move them, but you have to work at it a bit.  They seem to prefer high and straight.

7. TRAJECTORY CONTROL:  Again, you can flight the new P770 but it takes a little more work.  For trajectory control, I would rate the old P770 first, followed by the Bridgestone.

8. DISTANCE CONTROL-MY KEY TO APPRECIATING AN IRON: All three of these sets are super in this area. At this time I would choose the new P770 in this area because I seem to lose less on the slight misses.

In summary, I was not wowed by the distance with the new P770, nor wowed by the feel.  Distance surpassed my gamers, but by probably 1/2 a club.  Feel and sound are just fine for this player but neither a reason to switch to the new P770.  What I was impressed with was dispersion and distance control.  The Bridgestone J15 CB is my favorite all time iron, and the original P770 was my second favorite.  I am 100% in the honeymoon phase and I know that can go away quickly sometimes.  BUT for now, the new P770 is in the bag because I am hitting balls closer to the pins with them (and the little extra distance is nice).

Aren't the lofts pretty much equal on all 3 sets? Looked it up .....original 770s are same loft and j15cb is actually one degree stronger

I would say the 770’s are a bit more forgiving throughout the set yes.. Most noticeably in the longer irons though.

Thanks, I have 765s, they are starting to get worn. Looked at the 770s the other day, pretty.

Got mine today and I came to this section to see if the feeling of love is mutual with fellow WRXr's. My god, what a beautiful set of irons. The feeling of these are so nice. I am coming from P790 (2019's) custom built from TM with DG S300, PXG 0311T gen 2, and Mizuno MP 20 SEL's. I went with KBS Tour S 120's in the P770's, very glad I did. I was very very surprised with the forgiveness of these as well. Sold my P790's quickly. I think the TM's win; Now to sell the other 2 set's (lefty's)

Great to hear bud......are these in line with 0311T as far as feel/sound and size? You guys are really pushing another lefty into a set! Did you get the 4i too?

I'd say they're about the same size as the 0311T's, maybe a touch larger if you look really really close, maybe. As for feel and sound. Hard to say really, they both feel really good. I was using P790's since June and haven't really touched my MP 20 SEL's and PXG 0311T's. The P790's are not the best feeling so it's hard to compare the exact sound and feel. I'll say this though - I am impressed how good these p770's feel!

Yes, I have the 4 iron, easy to hit.

Curious how would you compare distance 770 vs 790? Obviously 790 are stronger lofted but curious what your seeing.

I noticed better dispersion and about 5-10 yards less on average. P790's 7 iron was about 185 yards, which is too much. The flight was pretty flat too with the 790's. I am averaging about 175 with the 770's give or take but the flight is so much better, better spin, and better dispersion.

I've got 3 rounds on them and really am enjoying them.  They perform as well as my swing and do forgive some of my sins.  Distance is good, I think they feel good and I can hit various shots as needed with them.  Like the way they hold the greens compared to other hollow back sets I have owned.  The real surprise for me is how easy it is to hit the 4 iron off the deck or tee.  It's make my hybrid obsolete.

Why doesn't anyone bend the 770's to similar lofts and then compare the two? Of all the tests, nobody has bent the irons 2 degrees strong to see the difference.

That would be interesting.  I know for myself and many others the appeal is the more traditional lofting aspect.

I'm curious on how forgiving the P770's are compared to the 790's. I feel the two can't be compared unless the lofts are the same. I'm sure I'm wrong but that's jumped out to me as they're comparing distance and launch angles.

I got fit for a set here at the local Golf Galaxy with a couple of Taylormade reps and ordered them on 8/24.  I didn't want to just order them w/o getting fit and I went to the first available local fitting...apparently I was the only person that signed up the entire day (covid I guess).  Glad I did b/c b/c I would've ordered the wrong shaft.

Don't think they are coming till early November.

4th round with these this morning after having them regripped with my favorite mid-size grip.  Really beginning to dial in my distances and get comfortable with these.  They hold the greens really well and I am spinning some shots back.  Forgiveness on less than great swings is there w/o a ton of distance loss.  Longer irons including 4 iron easy to elevate.  A wedge from 117 on in is money for me.  And I like the feel particularly when struck well.  Feedback on off center hits is there but not terribly harsh.  The honeymoon continues

I just ordered a set today from Golf Galaxy, 7-AW with the MMT shaft to replace my Mizuno MP59's. They told me 4 weeks. I was between the 770's and the 790's. I hit both but liked the 770 feel better and it actually performed better for me.
