Taylor Made Tour Burners went on a pretty special major streak between 1996 (Lehman US Open runner up, Open Champion), 1997 (Els US Open winner, Lehman 3rd), and 1998 (O Meara Masters and Open Champion, top 5 in PGA, Janzen US Open winner and Lehman again in the top 5). That's surely a performance from a single iron model that takes beating.

I think the Titleist Box Blades are the best looking clubs in history, and perhaps the Titleist AP2 are the most important to modern day iron design.

I think the all-time greatest irons are within the last few years ... if I had to pick a set to go play my best round.  Ping i210, Titleist T100, Cobra King Tour MIM, Mizuno 221-225, TM P7TW, p770-p790, Srixon Zx7.

 

Ping eye2's were obviously revolutionary at the time with the forgiveness and sales volume.  AP2's seemed to be everywhere for a long time.   Tourstage, Mizuno, and Miura all have models in their history that would win awards for softness and/or 'feel'.   

 

But, I think the term greatest would probably apply to the recent stuff.

Just from my personal experience, over 50+ years, three stick out:

 

Hogan Apex Plus

Mizzy MP32

And ... my current Mizzy MMCs (truly love these irons).

I am going with the Callaway X14, from what I can see they are still legal to play after the groove rule change. 

 

They were forgiving but it was still possible to work the ball.

 

There have been many other great sets of irons, but these were IMO suitable for the widest group of skill sets.

J40 DPC are legendary. I don’t think they have made an iron with a players look in such a forgiving great feeling package. Throw in the J40CB, J33CB and J15CB, but the DPC are truly unique.

I keep a set of each of these ready to go and still take them out from time to time…. I even have an elusive 3 iron in the DPC …. Such a fun set. 
 

that time period from 2010 through 2015 produced some awesome irons and all legal to play today.
