This thread got me feeling nostalgic. Pulled the DH89 out of my closet and took a trip down memory lane. Been gaming my 009 for a few years so I kinda lost track of my BM for a while. Going to bag this for my upcoming golf trip for old time's sake. Thanks Mr Morgan, this is quite a beauty you built.

I never saw any difference in design/looks or felt a difference between an 89 and 009, other than a lighter wallet for the 009.  Do you all ?

Never handled a 009 to be honest but my dh89 is superb. Always planned to have another one made with a flow neck but never got around to it. Don’t see anything out there right now that matches the 89 to my eye that is accessible to most.

There are very slight dimensional differences between the two.  Only a putter geek who studies both would know.  There have been threads here talking about them but I don't recall the exact threads.  Perhaps someone will remember or conduct a search and post the link.  That said, I love my DH89 and have had great success gaming it.  I have putted with a 009 before (not mine).  The look from address is nearly identical.  As @oneaugustasaid, the DH89 is lighter on the wallet.  I got a great deal on my DH89 GSS with long pipe neck.  I shudder to think what a 009 with the same materials and specs would have cost me.

The flow neck versions, like my DH89, are fabulous!  They are out there.  Best of luck in your quest to obtain one.

I’ve had friends that have had 009’s and I owned a tour rat for 10 years before cashing out on it.  The 89 is every bit as nice just doesn’t have the clout.

Have owned both & both are exceptional flatsticks. I could only notice a slight difference between the 2 in the heel/neck but they had to be side by side to distinguish.. Feel/performance wise If there were a difference I sure couldn’t distinguish.

I saw a post recently on the Byron Facebook page from his business partner Steve about how he got some pics of an early Swag Handsome One that seems to have some design influence from Byron. Not sure how much or if true but could be an option if you find a Gen 1/2 Swag and compare.

I can definitely notice small differences between the two. The BM has softer bumpers and more rounded overall. It's the most noticeable when I look down and see the topline. The 009 topline is very leveled off while the BM looks a little rolled. I'm not sure if this is standard or if the BM got the Tai treatment, can't remember. The 009 has a slightly softer feel but I think it has to do with the milling. The BM also feels heavier but it plays 1/2" longer with just about the same head weight.

For those of you who want to have some work done on your Byron's, where do you send them in now that the BM shop is closed? I've had BOS do some work on my Scotty's, considering going with them for my Byron now.

Byron's former partner has been sending a lot of heads into BOS lately for a few of their finishes.

What type of work? If it's just a Refinish BOS is a great choice...

I owned a DH89 that I had Byron make about...oh...five years ago and I own a 009m now.

Functionally and performance wise...identical.

The 009m CNC program Don runs is exquisite. The subtle milling patterns on the putter are pretty striking and I think I much prefer the look of a 009m to the DH89. I think if you showed someone blank, unstamped, raw stainless 009m heads next to DH89 heads, most people would gravitate towards the 009m.

However...the handcrafted look/feel of every Byron I've ever seen warms my heart. He was truly a talented and thoughtful craftsman. I deeply regret selling my DH89.

I think you nailed it. I doubt there is much if any difference in performance between the two (or between an old Ping anser for that matter). Once you are in the milled putter space you are pretty much talking about less tangible and more subjective features like aesthetics, craftsmanship, and branding. Basically how it makes you feel. I think both makers are masters in their own niches.

To be fair, it is interesting phrasing. "When I did this putter."

I'm not talking about the 009M, which is an update of the 009.  I'm referring to the "original" 009.  It doesn't matter at this point.

Those Cameron videos where he prattles on about his "inspirations" never fail to make me laugh.  The peak (or nadir) of those was the Japan museum/gallery one.  Even Don was embarrassed by that one, which is saying something.
