New Swing Speed Trainer - MaxSwingSpeed

Recommended Posts

Week three, day one:  Pre and post swing speed averages, 100.04/98.47...both slightly down from week two's 100.4/99.9.  A bit disappointed, but not really surprised as back pain has hobbled me at everything this week.  (No reason to connect that with the training; it's just something I deal with regularly.)

Glad I was patient and stuck with week one-two training and didn't jump ahead to week three-four right away, because the amount of extra energy expended is considerable...basically double with the slide steps added.  Slide steps, for me, really accentuate the feeling of weight transfer to my front side, almost like a mini Happy Gilmore thing.

Still nothing athletic about my weak side swings.  So bad I would prefer just to skip those, but I'm sticking with the protocol.

I received my MSS Trainer a few days ago.

First impressions are that it's well built and the adjustable weighting system is both solid and convenient. I really like have an all-in-one trainer, rather than the weights being spread across multiple devices. I'll be honest, an irrational part of me was worried about the weights somehow coming loose and flying off through my neighbour's window, but seeing how secure they are when screwed in, I don't think that's going to happen.

I've only managed a few swings in a very cold garage, so wasn't going all out. However it feels good and and I can really see how cycling through the different weights is going to help train the fast twitch muscles. Swinging left handed, as a righty, was also very weird. It's comical how much slower it is on that side. I'm sure that will improve over time though.

It'll be a few months until the show melts here and I can start the training regime properly. However, when I do, I'll be sure to report back. My next purchase will be a radar so I can track my progress.

I've wanted to try a swing speed trainer, but always found the price of entry ridiculous. No disrespect to the OEMs but $200 for weighted sticks, f'outta here. $85 (with Feb21 discount code) is still a lot for what it is, but much more reasonable to justify. At least in my mind.

I'll be giving this one a go solely based on the pricing.

Thanks for giving my trainer a shot and I hope that once you've had a chance to use it and see speed and distance gains you'll be happy with your purchase. Also hope you'll share how things are progressing with everyone here and/or via Instagram as I know we've all been enjoying seeing how people are getting on with training. Thanks again!

Glad it arrived safely, the weather has been wreaking havoc on deliveries yet again. Happy to hear you are liking the design and build of the trainer and trust me, I worried about the weights too until I did lots of tests, LOL.

Hopefully things warm up so you can really get cracking with the training program and the radar will definitely help with progress when you're stuck indoors.

Thanks again!

When I have a chance in the next week I'm going to work on compiling the speed tracking data from all of the prototype testers to better show how speed increases differ from person to person. I know it can be frustrating when the speed gains stall out for a bit and hopefully your back lets you progress safely.

At the very least I'm happy to hear that the slide step is helping you feel a good weight transfer. Those guys on TV make it look so easy, LOL.

Definitely keep up those weak side swings, they may be ugly but they'll pay dividends in a short while.

slow and steady lol

Another session in but I think my 126mph a couple sessions back was an anamoly LOL and set my expectations too high after that

But its kind of crazy how your body and feels are different day to day.

I started out at session really slow with the driver 116.67MPH. Seeing that  amped me up to get more speed. Ended the session averaging 121.67! so not too bad

pretty happy so far, I get to play golf tomorrow so itll be fun and scary as I haven't really touched a ball for a bit

I'll add that I ordered this roughly a week and a half ago and it has been delayed by USPS because of the weather and all that... but Max Swing Speed has been super responsive and helpful even when USPS has not provided any updates.  Awesome company to work with and I can't wait to get swinging.

Really appreciate your patience with all of the delays. You and everyone I've dealt with on GolfWRX have been amazing and it's been a much better experience starting a company than I thought possible.

Got another session in.

Driver started at 120 and I ended the session at 124.33! so pretty happy. not no monster like @hoselpalooza but getting there... LOL

I also started trying different techniques to see what gave me better numbers. Its kind amazing how somethings you try to "extra" don't really give you more speed, then somethings you try that you don't think will add speed does.

I tried "sitting down" a bit more at transition then firing and I got more speed. As I noticed I was jumping a bit too much and early

We can't all be monsters but 124 will probably get it done on at least 1 or 2 courses around the globe, LOL.

The little tweaks you make along the way that prove useful are always so interesting. "Using the ground" or "squatting" can be such a key for gaining extra speed.

I had a sequencing issue for a long time that caused horrific early extension but by swinging with all the weights on the trainer and keeping my right heel down as long as possible (Moe Norman style) I was able to fix the sequencing problem and simplify my whole move and in so doing pick up gobs of speed.

Golf is brutal at times but damn is it fun working through it and finding something that works.

Week four, day one:  97.19/97.3...down yet again. However, I did gain, on average, one yard in distance. Can only hope this is just a temporary plateau/downturn, since one yard is not worth the effort.

On a side note, I decided to break protocol and use the SuperSpeed routine, omitting the heaviest and lightest weight, then doing three regular and slide steps with each.  I was curious as to whether the fewer total number of swings might translate into less overall fatigue during and after training.  And for this one session, it did not.  Will likely try that method again sometime, but for now it's back to the MSS protocol.

I don't like seeing anyone not making progress or feeling like the effort isn't worth it so I emailed some of my testers who had similar issues and wanted to see if there was a consensus on what they did to finally break through their personal plateaus. What I found interesting was their answer were pretty similar. They did two things that actually go hand in hand to help with the training protocols.

First, they slowed down their overall pace during the training, they felt they were rushing the whole process. It's as if the idea of swinging faster sped up how quickly they went through each step. The second was that they really focus on swinging as fast/hard as they could and by doing so they realized they had been leaving a bit in the tank which was limiting their overall progress.

The idea of giving yourself the time to rest in between max effort swings is something to pay attention to. Another weight lifting analogy is the difference between someone doing a heavy weight routine vs a  light weight routine. One person needs 90 seconds of rest in between sets the other is ready to rock in 30 seconds.

This is something I will clearly spell out in an update on the site and Instagram posts because I know when I shoot the weekly training vids I am ripping through them as fast as I can due to time constraints and I'm worried that the overall pace I'm flying through things is bleeding over into people feeling they need to do the same as opposed to going at their own pace.

We'll find you the speed you want and hopefully this idea will help.

Happy to hear there is an opening day in sight. That is great news for you and all the other golf fiends across the pond.

There will definitely be an update this week with additional drills and all new charts to follow. I have been absolutely slammed with work and wedding prep as it's only a week away but I was able to sneak out for a few hours to shoot the content I need to show off the new moves correctly.

I do apologize for the delay in getting that info up on the site. Apparently everyone who told me wedding planning takes up the entire day wasn't wrong.

Thanks for the response.  I somewhat suspected that I was rushing through things too much, because by the time I was getting to the end of the Max effort sets, I was really gassed.  Almost like an all-out sprint.  Intellectually that doesn’t make sense: one sprint, three times a week, with a day or two off in between.  Will definitely try a slower paced approach this week, even though the temptation will be there to just get it over with and check the numbers again.

Also, since there are plenty of ways to go about any kind of training, I wonder if you’ve tested any interval type protocols, alternating heavy and light sets, instead of the straight build up from light to heavy?  I guess I’d just like to know more about the (inexact) science involved. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I’m still onboard.  Looking forward to seeing some of your more advanced protocols and where that may take us.
