eBay Return - am I defenseless?

Sorry. Too quick to respond. Yeah that is utter BS, then. Let us know how it ends up. I’ve had better luck taking my grievances to the phone support.

Actually, I can see the dent in both your pic and his. It is much more pronounced in his pic - looks like the lighting was better- but if you look closely at your pic you can see the faint lines of an I indentation in exactly the same area of the face.

I'm NOT sure why the OP (seller) posted the pics as he did, because it made it quite confusing; but his photo is the one with the putter right-side-side up (middle photo), whereas the two with the putter upside-down were taken by the buyer.

IMHO buyer is scum of the earth and hope he misses every put over 6 inches for the rest of his life, and lips out half of the 6 inchers - would serve him right.  Karma is a B!TC#, he better watch his back.

In my Datrek - DG lite II cart bag attached via Top-Lok to my Bag Boy - Quad XL - I'm decidedly brand agnostic:

I like to invert colors to see contrast. OPs pic on the left, Buyer's are center/right. OP is getting screwed here.

If someone intelligent at eBay looks at this, they should see that the dent was not there in the original listing photos.

That may not happen though.

You should always take pictures outside, for future reference. In the shade or in the sun, where the lighting is good. Indoor lightning is not enough for cell phone cameras to produce a great photo.

This sucks but this is how it goes on eBay.

My apologies for posting them in the wrong order. I uploaded them from my phone and clicked my picture first but for some reason they came out in the wrong order.

Thanks for editing my picture in my defense and making it lighter. I agree I should have posted a better picture in the auction. Unfortunately I don’t think I will win this battle even though the buyer stopped replying after I called him out. I will try to keep you guys updated.

Unfortunately the buyer is much more protected than the seller. The buyer can file for a return and send it back without being approved from the seller. I always end up taking as many photos as I can and go into the great detail to avoid the buyer not knowing. I've been lucky with that method so far *knock on wood*

I agree, take lots of pictures from different angles, but that probably wouldn't work against a buyer like this.  Here's what I've done to try and protect myself as a seller on ebay.

I opened an online bank account and put $1 in it.  I then linked that account and only that account to ebay.  When I sell an item, I use the funds available for distribution (or whatever ebay calls it now that they've removed Paypal from the equation) to purchase the shipping label.  Then I'll wait for ebay to send the proceeds to my online account - usually the next day or the day after that.  After it's in my online account, I'll transfer the money to my regular checking account and ship the item (sorry buyers, but if ebay is going to hold my money for a couple of days, I'll hold the item for a couple of days).  I've been buying FedEx labels on ebay now.  They're only slightly more expensive than USPS, but shipping is much faster and waaaay more reliable.  I've only had 3 transactions like this, but all the buyers had their item 4 or 5 days after payment.

If I made a mistake, I'm happy to make it right.  But if I come across a buyer like the OP got, who wants to damage an item and then return it, I'll deny it.  If ebay wants to force me to accept the return, well they only have access to $1.

Not sure if that would work (haven't looked into ebay fine print), but you definitely wouldn't be able to sell anymore stuff at that point.  Ebay would just take the amount due back to the buyer from the proceeds of future sales (assuming they couldn't access your funds some other way).

Yeah and then the next step would be to send a collecting agency to get the money from you. So what he wrote definitely does not work long term.

Oh for sure that would be my last sale on ebay.  But I'm stubborn enough to walk away from that market and only sell on CL or FB Marketplace.

@CbusPGA91 Any chance the item was damaged in shipping? If so, You could raise a shipping insurance claim if eBay forces you to take the return...

I don't think it could have been damaged in shipping. It was shipped with the head cover on and with plenty of packing material to make sure it didn't move around. My theory is he used it, threw it in the bag without a head cover, then it got some bag chatter damage so now he wants to return it. It looks pretty similar to a bag chatter ding that irons will get.

Either that or carrying a wedge with putter (without cover) and the wedge hit into the putter and left that smiley (more like frown) mark.  Those inserts are made of real soft aluminum and dent very easily.  Buyer is scum.

This. That dent was there in your first “upside down” photo.

Both upside down photos came from the buyer ...

Maybe just a trick of the light, but I can't see the dent in your picture. I would not accept the putter the way it looks in the last photo if I was the buyer.

EDIT: My fault ... didn't realize the dent occurred AFTER purchase ... going to be hard to prove though. EBay almost always sides with buyer.

I'm just not sure why eBay doesn't really give you the option to defend yourself when someone wants to return something. The only options they give you are a full refund, partial refund, or message the buyer back. So now we have to wait 10 days before anything happens. Hopefully an actual person looks at the pictures and our conversations before making a decision.

Update: buyer filed a claim 10 days after we messaged back and forth. It took eBay 10 minutes to decide in the buyers favor. Looks like I’m done with eBay after this fiasco.

That sucks man, sorry to hear it. I don't think I've read it in this thread thus far, but can the rest of us get the buyer's ebay handle so we can update our block lists?

That buyer has been selling a ton recently and currently posted a sim2 3wood which he says in the description he "had some unexpected bills come up". He claims it is "new" but you can clearly tell it has been hit in the grass from the sole. He seems super knowledgeable even offering to put a grip on a custom putter he was trying to sell. It just screams he dented it and knows he can get a refund. He does have some bad feedback as a seller.

You're hosed.

After 11 trouble free years of selling things on EBay, with a perfect selling record, they took the side of someone that had a) put a crack in a camera body that wasn't there before and b) claimed that there was rust on the shutter, when you couldn't see the shutter because the camera back didn't open up.

I referenced the original posting's pictures, with no crack, and explained that it's impossible to see look at the shutter, and they told him to return the camera and refunded the guy's money.

That happened five year ago and I haven't dealt with EBay since.

Hey guys, I am the person he is referring to. I would refer you to my ebay history. I have never, not a single time, EVER returned an item or asked for credit. I have bought and sold hundreds of clubs and never had this issue. I'm not sure what happened while his putter was being packaged but I am telling you it came out of the box dented and I immediately messaged him. He said it was buyers remorse... the club showed up at my office Monday afternoon. I opened the box friday morning because I was planning on playing later that day. The face was dented and Immediately messaged him. That is the real sequence of events. now he is having people message me non stop on ebay. Just not right because my long history on ebay and this has never happened. It's just sad and disappointing and all over a whopping $200. I wish I would have just not said anything and put the putter in my garage because I would never sell something with a dent in the face.

Okay guys, this is comical. I messaged him and called him out about the SIM being used, and he updated his listing with this:

F4A08FA4-DCD2-451B-B09F-52CE0A5CD943.jpeg

I had a few concerns about his auction:

How does one get “dirt” from a putting mat? Do you have a real putting green in your office? If so, do you often take full swings on it with clubs?

“...check my eBay record. It is perfect.” No, it is not. You have 4 negative feedbacks and 2 neutral feedbacks as seller, based on deceptive descriptions.
