Sunglasses for Golf-Polarized, or not???

Recommended Posts

Polarized for me!  I have a pair of Flak Jacket 2.0 frames that I wear while golfing because I don't like to see the frame on the bottom.  I buy secondary lenses (Fuse/Revant) to swap out based on brightness of the day and if I scratch the lenses.

Like polarized lenses but I have found they can hinder your ability to spot a shiny new golf ball in rough.  I have terrible eyes and I find it hard to spot the ball with glasses on.  But I still wear some kind of glasses when I play because of how sensitive my eyes are.  I just flip them on top of my head to look for a ball.

Smith copper polarized.   Thank me later.

Although I am pretty crappy at putting.  So....maybe that's it,?   I never go outside without polarized sunglasses. Never take them off. Even wear when it's overcast.  Feel like they "brighten" everything and take all glare out.

I switch between non polarized, polarized, prizm and prizm polarized while golfing and playing softball and have never noticed a difference in depth perception.  And a variety of different lens colors as well.  There's only a couple of Oakley's lenses that I can't wear for golf.  The light golf lens is to lights for me, I wear the field (baseball) instead.  And the prizm jade.  With them I lose the ball at its peak and can't pick it back up after that.

I would guess that has to do more with the lens color that the polarized.

I also switch back and forth between polarized and non polarized when playing golf only

If I am doing anything else it is polarized sunglasses 24/7

Maui Jim sunglasses now, I had Costa before both are fantastic

For Golf I have a pair of Tifosi sunglasses

They have green lenses that are supposedly help you to read greens

I still suck at putting so maybe I am not the best person you should take advice from

Correct.  The lens color, the copper and the bronze, work great for golf.  The other colors, not so much.  Havent tried their yellow or rose, hear the rose is similar to the oakley's, but I'm sold on the Smith chroma pop.  It's great...

Polarized lenses are fine in most aspects of golf, but they mask the subtle undulations in greens.  For that reason I would advise against them.  Maybe the answer to your question is how good are you at putting and do you care about properly reading greens?

Yesterday, I was too lazy to get out my Oakley Jupiter Squared Golf prescription Sunglasses with G30 Lens designed for flat to medium light.  Lenses are Rose base with a subtle Iridium® coating to improve contrast and depth perception in blues and greens.  I missed at least 3 putts, and was off-line on one chip.

I just had cateract surgery and my opthomologist tells me I will likely 'not need glasses' anymore. I need to get new, uncorrected vision sunglasses and wonder if I should consider 'polarized'? Help!

I would recommend golf specific lenses.  They make them for a reason.

Polarized don’t work with my rangefinder they block the numbers in the display and I don’t want to take them off for every reading so non polarized for me.

^^^ THIS.

I wear contact lenses when I play (progressive glasses, and can't play unless I'm using my "distance only" prescription ... makes me crazy). For nearly 40 years, I've tried various brands of sunglasses, and NEVER found one I liked. Cheap, expensive, didn't matter. A month ago I bought a pair of the REKS golf-specific lenses and they are PERFECT. I can see the ball, and generally putt/read greens with them, unless the hole is in a shaded location.

My eyes, my eye doctor and my golf game all love them!

I have polarized Ray Bans for everyday use and non polarized Oakleys for golf.  Bought them off the bay with the original g30 lenses but also bought a pair of copper lenses from Fuse for brighter days.  Would love to find a lens I can use all the time.  How do the Enliven lenses hold up on sunny days?

Spot on, and none of them are polarized.  Which should answer the OP's question.

In all fairness Blue they don’t just “ make them” .  They make them to “sell them”. And if folks will but a different pair of sunglasses for every different activity all the better.

There probably is not really a correct answer on whether polarized are good for golf but I know they work well for me.

I take your point, and I don't disagree.  But with polarized sunglasses on, I can't read the screen of my iphone, or the face of my XM car radio, etc.  When I read about how polarization works, I understand why that is, and it isn't hard for me to understand why polarized isn't as good for reading greens.

None of this matters if you are taking the glasses off to putt.  Mine are distance prescription, so they stay on all the time.

Edit: Unless they've changed, Costco optical does NOT offer non-polarized sunglasses as an option, which I've always found interesting, if not odd.  That is a part of what drove me to REKS several years ago; some pretty serious eye problems were causing frequent prescription changes, and Oakleys were just outrageously expensive, especially given how crappy and fragile the frames are.  I couldn't get non-polarized at Costco, and then sort of stumbled across REKS; I've been buying/using those for three years now and couldn't be happier with them.

I came out of an eye appt 10 days ago with yet another new prescription (I've had SEVEN procedures on my right eye since June of 2018!).  I took a picture of my new prescription, emailed it to Steve at REKS, then called him to get the order placed before I left the parking lot.  The new sunglasses with their golf-specific lens arrive today, and I have a tournament tomorrow.

I use the Oakley field prizm lenses non-polarized. I tried the golf specific prizm and prizm dark, but I didn't find them dark enough for sunny days. Polarized lenses mess with my depth perception and I have trouble reading greens.
