I thought today exposed why she's not ready.  After 14, missed opportunities and a bad bogey at 17 - seemed to have to reset a few times coming in, IMO.

It seems she needs a little more seasoning.  But not much.  She is also a very nice human per the guys at the course who know her.  But she's still young (although quite mature, at least on course).  College might be great for her.

However, I think her biggest mistake was not using a local caddie.  Approach on 9, 3rd stroke on 9, birdie putt on 12 (misread), fairway wood on 13 (fer cryin' out loud, don't let her try that!) and maybe tee shot on 13 (go with three wood, play it as three-shotter), approach on 17, first putt on 17.  All areas a local caddie may have had a positive impact.

Seems that a local caddie may have helped her at least save at least one stroke (on #13) - gets her into playoff, maybe two - gets her the title.

It didn't appear her caddie was helping with club selection/wind direction or much green reading...

But I could be wrong - I often am.

As "local" as the knowledge is said to be with some of the greens/putts I'm surprised anybody has other than a local caddie for the AN round, but they all have their comfort zones and must feel comfortable reading the greens in general.  Probably fun experience for some to have parents/coaches on the bag and some probably really benefit from having those folks in other ways as well throughout the round as far as mental/other parts of the game.  Hard to estimate the value of some familiarity.  Easy to say from the armchair but I'd step aside in a heartbeat if I'd caddied the first two rounds for my daughter (in a fantasy life, not real) in favor of a local caddie for the last one.

Yeah.  I guess she had her trainer on the bag all three days?  That's what the broadcast said.  In any event, I don't think it was an ANGC caddie, but I could be wrong.  And yes, comfort level with the caddie and the experience is very important.  It's quite an accomplishment to even make the field.  It should also be enjoyable.

I wonder how NBC ended up with the broadcast rights to this.  It seems an odd fit. CBS of course is the only network to have broadcast The Masters, but they had early round partners who team up with them like ESPN at present.  Either of them would have seemed to be a better fit. NBC had Bones McKay who was OK and Kay Cockerill always does a good job but the rest were lost at sea much of the time.  It was an odd broadcast.

Final Four, IMO, and other games on different dates for the event.

Pretty simple. NBC had the broadcast rights for this since 2019 when it began. Same as GC (NBC) has also had for the D/C/P championships since it began.

ANGC has permanent towers on the course that are used by all of the television networks for the various AGNC telecasts including The Masters on CBS/ESPN. ANGC has a first flight broadcast/media center that is second to none which accommodates all of their video needs.

Not quite the drama as the 2019 version, but close. As bad as Rose played on the 13th, that approach on the 17th will hurt for some time.

I agree that a local caddie(s) might have made a difference for a number of players.

2017 US Am?

Yes

"Played a memorable 30-hole quarterfinal match in the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur, losing on the 12th extra hole to 13-year-old Chia Yen Wu. It was the longest 18-hole match in USGA history."

I remember watching this live.. Chia's caddie told exactly how the ball will behave..   Laura was playing amazing with driver and irons.. but had trouble putting..

You can definitely tell that Laura was the better player of the two..  BUT.. Caddie made the difference of that match..  I really felt bad for Laura.

From a Brit point of view this seems to be an American College event. Every player introduced by their US based college. There are other players who don't attend college or is ANGC in with the NCAA?

Thre are very few high level ams that don't play college golf in the US. Once you are done your junior career you either

  • Go to college and play golf in NCAA.
  • Try to go pro.
  • Don't play high level competetive golf anymore.

The whole NCAA "student athelete" thing is quite the unique US experience.  No other country does it at that level.

I stand corrected. The SKY TV coverage was very focused on which college they went to. So glad the winner isn't an NCAA clone.

Clone is a little harsh. Many pro players, men and women, wear their school colors proudly. Rickie? Rahm? Jordon? Heck, the PGA Tour events celebrate colleges pretty much every Saturday.

Maybe someone addressed this already but I don’t understand why Rose had to re tee on 13 after hitting it in the creek.  I was surprised they said she had to identify the ball.  Anyone know why ?

Because left of the creek is not a penalty area, and she couldn't find her ball. Since she was not virtual certain that the ball was in the penalty area, she had to treat it as a lost ball, and play her next shot from the previous spot (teebox).

Had she found the ball in the creek (PA), she could have taken relief just outside the PA where the ball last crossed the red line. If she had found her ball left of the creek, she could have possibly played it. It's rather thick there, so she probably wouldn't have been able to take an unplayable with line of sight relief, so re-teeing would have likely been the play.

Basically, to take relief from a penalty area one must be virtually certain that the ball is in the PA. If the PA extended left indefinitely, one could conclude that the ball was indeed in the PA. However, with the PA only encompassing the creek, it's possible the ball was lost left of the PA.
