I hate the look of Ping irons.... I don't like a pointy toe, and the cutout in the neck just looks so awkward to me.

Golf analytics/statistics are simply overkill in today's game. Everything has become all about the minutiae numbers - SG and launch monitor data and just make it more complicated (hence slower) than it should be. IMHO it's more than enough with the following : GIR, Total Putts, FIR, and penalty strokes to get a good overview of where your game is and where there's the most room for improvement regardless of what handicap you play to.

AND

Indoor launch monitor data off of mats is just complete bs for everything other than club head speed and swing info. We have an incredible indoor center here that has GCQuads on the range, and a bevy of Trackman simulators. Same day - ball flight numbers between the two are so different that I haven't got a clue as to what my ball will do once the winter is finally over and I'm hitting outside again.

Don’t worry, be happy - keeps them off the rivers when they tinker. Tusen Takk,

Insisting on one extra layer of grip tape is silly. Get over yourself dude.

I'm interested what do you mean by this? Do you build clubs for others and do not like to put extra grip tape?

For example, I'm going to change my driver and 3W grips soon.
I own 2 standard grips that I want to make feel like midsize. I dont want to buy new ones.
Question for me is, should I put +4 or +5 grip tapes. It's a question between slightly larger or slightly smaller that I have to decide.

One might want just a slightly larger standard grip. Therefore "insisting" on one extra layer of grip tape.
The size difference between standard and midsize is quite big, therefore why one should not care about 1/4 size diffence between sizes?

I would not have made this post without the "Get over yourself dude".

This thread has become pretty light-hearted and my post was intended that way too, but I’ll explain: I don’t think one extra layer of grip tape makes any difference at all. It’s a placebo.  It may be *barely* perceptible to the user but it’s not thick enough to make any real difference.

I re-gripped some second-hand irons yesterday and had to remove two layers of grip tape and the entire time I was thinking “why?”

If you want midsize grips, you either need more tape or (wait for it) actual midsize grips.

I will never understand peoples preference to try to alter grips to fit their needs instead of just buying the correct sized grips in the first place. Why put layers of tape under a standard sized grip to make it feel like a midsized grip when you can just buy a midsized grip.

If it costed a bunch of money to do, then fine--but regripping clubs is one of the cheaper things you can do in the sport. You can get a new set of grips for your iron set for the same cost as a box of Pro V1s.

Not if you use the higher-end grips like MCC's, MCC +4, anything with cord basically.  A lot of grips are over $10 each, so it'd be closer to $100 to regrip a set of irons.  Still much less expensive than buying new clubs, but not exactly a drop in the bucket either.

I have the same confusion.  Just get a bigger grip.  I find it especially confusing when adding the tape,  the grip necessarily thins with each layer of tape leading to,  more tape.

Because midsized grips are heavy and squishy. Usually a midsized grip will throw off swingweight more than adding some layers of tape.

I personally hate a grip that is soft and moves around in my hand and would rather have a standard grip stretched thinner over tape so that it's firmer feeling than to have a midsized grip that's too soft feeling.

True, but I am guessing the majority of people dont go for the most expensive $13 grips in the world. You can get a good Winn/Pride midsized grip for around $8-$9. I regripped my whole iron set 4-PW last season for like $85 with Dri-Tac midsize grips. In the pricing of the golf world, $80-$100 is relatively cheap to just do it correctly the first time.

lol I personally like the soft feeling. Its the most comfortable to me, plus i have larger hands (XL) so I was fitted for midsized grips so it didnt make it feel like I was swinging a toothpick.

I found that more rigid grips, like the grey GolfPride grip everyone uses, tear through my gloves super fast and just dont feel as comfortable in your hands when your swinging 200+ times per round with range balls/practice swings. It also feels like with my swing speed, those grips are going to slip right through my hands on my follow through. especially on a hot day and your working up a little sweat.

I understand I am in the minority with this one

Unless you're in Canada where a generic Golf Pride Tour Velvet costs $15.99 before a 13% sales tax.... Thankfully Golftown has an annual grip event which brings them way down, but if you need to re-grip mid season, it's not that cheap up here.

That's all well and good but I still think the difference between one layer and two is practically meaningless when the tape is as thin as a piece of copier paper.

"just buy the right size grip"

I'm an Arccos user and, aside from two models of JumboMax, nobody makes an Arccos grip larger than midsize. So when I order clubs from Ping I have them use their gold/midsize grip and then place 4 wraps of tape underneath. It is the perfect amount so that my fingers do not dig into my palm on my right hand.

I have a caliper with a vernier scale on it that I use to make sure they're the right size. 23.3mm at six inches from the end of the shaft is perfect.

I'd love to be able to buy an Arccos Tour Velvet in Jumbo but they don't make it. In fact all midsize grips from Arccos are out of stock so I'm really assed out unless I want to try the JumboMax.

The screw in sensors are much more helpful for that reason, can put them on basically any grip you wish.

I wish they'd reduce the size of the screw-in type. ShotScope's screw-in sensors are much lower profile than most others I've seen.

Not trying to be rude, but is your handicap really 29.2? If so, have you considered the possibility that you might be focusing very intently on the wrong details?

It's not rude. There is a reason I don't offer swing advice. I don't mind sharing the hcp because it provides context and also motivates me to improve it.

Last year was the first year I've played golf since 2005 and the first year I've tried to get better. So yeah, my handicap is current as of the close of our season last year. I expect to be down to an 18 by mid-summer because of the practice and preparation I put in over the winter.

Part of that preparation is ensuring the clubs fit and are comfortable, including the grips. I found a grip measurement I'm really happy with so I make sure all new grips are that same size. It's something I have to do once per club and then never think about again, which gives me peace of mind and helps my mental game. It's not like I'm skipping range sessions to stay home and re-measure grips. 😉

I would consider buying a set of irons and wedges and not thinking about how well they fit to be a complete lack of focus.

I used screw-in on my older clubs, but switched to the embedded when I bought my new irons this winter. And I use embedded on all my clubs now, though I keep a few screw-in on hand so I can try out clubs before committing to regripping them. The embedded is just cleaner to me and I don't experience the knobbly looseness that some people claim they have felt so it's a no brainer; aside from the extra rolls of tape.

... I really think WRX should open Kardashian Golf Centers where players can match up heads and shafts that appeal to their fashion sense. They would make a fortune. I just did a Stealth fitting and the GD Tour AD-IZ performed best and had an intoxicating feel. The orange/white/matt black shaft really clashes with the Sim2 Max bright blue forged ring on the head but the LM didn't have any way to add "fashion" to the data so I guess I am happily stuck with ugly. 😉

The size doesn't bug me honestly and if it's collecting more data I'm fine with that.

I was looking at the embedded as well for that clean look but the screw in ones made more sense for me just from a cost point and ease of use. I haven't had issues with them unscrewing or anything like that but to each their own, I've just seen more people suggest the screw in for that reason.

I wouldn't have paid for a full set of embedded grips on my own, but they came with the G425s. I had no issues with the screw-in ones. Other than reflexively 'tightening' them became a part of my pre-shot routine. I never had one fall off but they will work loose over time if you don't give them a little tweak. I still have one in my 2-hybrid and putter.
