I'm done with eBay!

Recommended Posts

I've posted ebay threads on here before complaining. But this time I'm done with ebay. I just sold a speedzone head brand new in plastic for $220 plus $13 shipping. I just checked my bank account and I see eBay paid me $187. I basically lost $45 on this transaction! That seems insane. Also I bought the shipping label from eBay which was $12.70

Thanks man, yah eBay! Lol. I will just sell golf stuff here and price it a little lower. Paypal fees are not too bad.

I just thought that seems ridiculous.

That’s roughly 20%. That seems pretty high. I just sold something and was charged about 14%. I wonder if it changes based on how much or how little you sell through them or if it’s determined by the value of what’s sold.

I actually looked it up last week when I was trying to sell a set of irons. It was 12.3% (I believe), so it was going to cost me $70ish to sell my sticks. I canceled the listing and took $50 less to sell it on the BST.

You can see the itemized fees under the payments section in my ebay selling page. It should be 12.3% plus the cost of the shipping label. That would put your net at $191.64 vs. the $187. Did you have a reserve on the listing or was it part of ebay global shipping program I've see fees for both of those but it appears you have some fee in the range of $4.

No reserve and no global. I called EBAY earlier and the rep mentioned something about it being more because I'm sellimg to someone from Texas and their taxes. I have no idea. I should maybe go check my itemized receipt.

I don't see anything itemized just see funds available payout was $187.

Sounds like it's close then.

Funny thing is I had it listed on BST for $230 including shipping and a guy lowballed me and offered $200 shipped. I was appalled at that low offer. The funny thing is that is basically what I ended up selling it for on Ebay.

In the my ebay seller hub go to payments - all transactions - transaction details - scroll down to bottom for fee breakdown

They sure make it difficult to find 🙂

EDIT: Could be the sales tax as ebay usually says "your item sold for $X" which includes the sales tax the buyer paid if any...

I’m pretty sure the buyer pays the tax not the seller.

when you factor in ebays fees it’s a good bet you can price things 20% lower in a BST ad vs eBay and still be about even.   I had a head listed on eBay for $400 (using best offer)sold it here for $275 shipped.  I would have had to seek it for around $350 on eBay to get the same result.  That being said, I factor all that in when I sell on eBay.  An offer of $275 on the bay would have been an easy “decline offer”.

I'm on the APP on the phone and maybe it doesn't show all that. I'll check on my computer later.

The fees are terrible and I am only selling there now if I don't care what I bring in. My issue lately has been deadbeat buyers. The last 2 sales I had were asked to be cancelled. I had some pullouts on for $119 shipped. Guy offered me $95. I was going to counter but said screw it, sell 'em. I accepted his offer. No payment for 3 days. After I sent another message he said sorry but I went with another set, can we cancel. I sent him a very nasty note back but cancelled because I knew I had not options. These freaking people need some sort of consequences.

At least he didn't pay and then ask for a refund before you shipped.  If you had decided to go ahead with the refund you'd lose the paypal fees if that's how the buyer paid.

This topic comes up fairly often now, and I'll repeat what I've posted before.  The fees on ebay really haven't changed at all.  Here's how your fees would have broken down for that sale to TX under the prior ebay model:

Total sale price = $233 (with TX taxes of 8.25%, the total the buyer paid was $252.22)

PayPal fees = 2.9% of $252.22, plus $0.30 = $7.61

ebay 10% fee = $23.30

Total fees = $30.91

Shipping label = $12.70

Net after all fees = $233 - $30.78 - $12.70 = $189.39

EDIT- my point with these replies is you can figure all of this out before creating a listing, the fees shouldn't be a surprise after the sale occurs.

EDIT 2- just saw TX also has up to a 2% local tax, so changed above to 8.25%.

The fees are spot on and essentially the same as it has always been. I've explored most of the other large options and find their fees are almost exactly the same as Ebay. Facebook wins now, but the fees are on the way I hear.

Doesn't seem all that steep considering the exposure and potential buyers you're gaining access to. I know a lot of people hate free market capitalism lately though. In my "conservative" province of Saskatchewan, our gov't just imposed a restriction on fees for food market apps. Kinda scary.

Thank you for posting this. I guess I never paid so much attention and maybe the fact I feel like I lost alot of value here really annoyed me.

I knew I shouldn't of made this thread but I needed to vent !

Ps I'm taking my super hybrid listing off eBay as well! I'll stick to bst for sure.

Maybe this new fee structure will cause more people to price their items more appropriately on the BST.  I love it when I see BST pricing and go to Callawaypreowned or even the dreaded ebay and see several of the same for $20-$40 less.🙂

This is very true.  And I think I've been guilty as well.

One difference is that on the BST, people often include shipping in the sale price.  On ebay, people tend to bid up an item with seemingly no regard to additional shipping costs.

Not exactly on topic, but an eBay issue just the same...

I bought two pairs of adidas shorts on eBay this morning, and they charged sales tax. Only one problem - there has never been sales tax on clothes in NJ. I put a note in the purchase to notify them, but I’m sure I’m not the first person to tell them this.

It was only a few dollars, not nearly enough to try to battle over it, and I wanted the shorts so I just paid it. But it’s not right.

I sold an item on here.  Buyer paypalled me the funds.  then I discovered I had made an error in description of the item.  Notified the buyer and he decided to cancel.  I refused the Paypal payment and lost nothing for the fees.  the key is to not remove the funds until the buyer has the product and is satisfied. I have never lost paypal fees when refunding.
