Taller players using flatter lie Irons?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6'8" and recently had Maltby build me a set of custom length clubs. The 7i is 38.5" with standard lie angle (61.5 degrees). I hit a bunch of balls on the range using the sharpie line lie angle test and standard lie is darn near perfect for me. I haven't had the chance to do the same with the rest of the irons, but I'd have to imagine they will be pretty close. When I did my iron fitting we did not discuss lie angle at all, so I was concerned what I should go with. All the static measuring charts had me at 2-3 degrees upright. It was suggested on here that I stay at standard or even a degree or 2 flat as it would help me to shallow the club better/easier. I just got the clubs in, but so far at standard lie they feel really comfortable. I do plan to do the sharpie test with the rest of the set plus my wedges and make any adjustments as necessary.

I'm opposite, I have everything 2* up (6'6"). As others have said whatever works best, I would do a dynamic test just to check.

Any taller players (6 foot+) playing their irons flatter than standard?

I have my wedges 2 flat to stop the ball going right (leftie). Thinking doing same with irons however but worried will mess things up.

I'm 6'5 and play my irons and wedges 1* flat.

Perhaps more relevant than height is your wrist-to-floor measurement.  So a tall person with really long arms might need flatter clubs than an average person.  (Not to mention things like your body position when you set up to the ball or how you swing the club.)

Do as @Jc0 suggested, have some bent and try it out.  If you don't like it, then have them bend back. Worst case scenario you are out $20.

Can someone talk me through the sharpie test? Like I'm a 2 year old 🙂

Take a ball marker and make a line on the ball with a sharpie. Set the ball up so this line is vertical and perpendicular to the ground/mat and facing the club face at impact. Once you hit the ball the line transfers to the club face telling you how the club face came through impact. If it transfers vertically to the club face, like my pictures above, your dynamic lie is where it should be. If it's "leaning" towards the heel or the toe then you could use some lie adjustment.

Perfect, thanks, will give that a go.

I‘m 6‘3“ and play irons and wedges at +0.5“, 2* up, because the static fitting said so. I’m starting to doubt this is right for me, as I’m fighting a hook/overdraw. Will do the sharpie test and adjust accordingly.

Played 9 today and took the opportunity to mark my ball with a line. Made sure to align it properly on my par 3 tee shots (and one short par 4), to get at least some real world feedback.

5i: looked ok, but the shot was a hard draw

6i: could be flatter

7i: definitely too upright

My wedges were drawing a lot, again, so I suspect they might be too upright as well.

Will keep doing this and I might start to align the ball on fairway iron shots as well (playing casual rounds so it doesn’t matter).

  • 1 year later...

People saying one inch flat and upri go t from standard…..there is already a difference in lie angles by manufacturers…for instance Titleist is the most upright major player, Mizuno is the flattest…being like 1.5 degrees flatter than Titleist irons. Callaway, taylormade, Srixon…different lie angles out of the box as their standard.

that being said…the generic way of a lie board or marking the ball will give you a reading to suggest a adjustment toward flatter or upright; however, it can be completely wrong if your swing is jacked up. Example…If you come in steep to the ball like an over the top, most average golfers do…they come in so steep that then they early extend and lift the handle. Doing this 100% changes the lie angle at impact.

I play off 4 hcp and I fight early extension. When I perform a lie test on a board it says I need to go 4 upright. If I do the ball test, it says I need to go 2 upright. My stick shot shape is a draw. If I bent my clubs upright I would snap hook every shot.  I play 718 AP2’s 3iron - 7 iron standard Titleist lie angle with my 8, 9, PW, 50, 54, 60 all 2 flat…which is pretty much stock Mizuno lie angles.

so don’t get tied up too much on what the marks are…biggest thing is the what the golf ball is flighting. Is it starting left or right if target? Is it drawing or fading?

another tip I have for you is if you can shop shot ( draw and fade) and you find it goes straight in one of the two…example…you try to fade the ball ans it goes straight, and when you play a draw it overdraws. Club is too upright.

if you try to draw and it goes straight and when you hit a fade it slices, it’s too flat.

you should be able to shape shots both ways with the perfect lie angle.

if all you want to focus on is one shot…like a fade…most fade players alphabet their irons bent like 1* upright to aid in starting the ball left of target and then not over slicing…helps give it a baby fade.

I have never thought much about lie angle as I am typically the 95th percentage size. 6 ft. 190 lbs.

However, I recently had a session with the Srixon rep and he had me try a setup where irons were set 2 degrees flat. I was quite surprised by the result. My miss is a sometime pull left. Not a big hook or anything, but just a little bit of the lefts. With the flat setting, my dispersion was more consistent (center), and the ability to move the ball left and right seemed effortless. Having I been playing it wrong for the last couple of years?

I wouldn't have guessed I would be flat, as I have never tested that way in the past (but it's been a long time and a major swing change since). He was discussing that based on my body shape, long arms and legs for my size, that generally a flatter lie work well. Can a swing change drive this kind of a change...

Thanks.

It could simply be that you tend to deliver the club slightly closed...and a flatter lie helps to neutralize that

I am 6'2, with short T-REX arms. I play my irons .75" long and 2 degree flat. So I would say its not that uncommon.

6'4".  I play all my irons and wedges 2 flat. My tendency was left, so a little flatter helps.
