How much spin do you get on short irons?

Recommended Posts

Holding greens. If you've got your distances dialed in, how much rollout do you get per club?

I feel like I get enough out of my sw and aw to stop the ball, same w 9i, but really hard to judge run out from further away.

Last set of clubs v high launching didn't matter as much, but new set is flatter trajectory throughout, and trying to find out what others experience and expect.

I don't measure spin or roll-out by the # on the bottom of the club.  Spin is about ball (DASH or AVX) characteristics, green conditions and HOW I strike the ball.  I play either DASH and AVX, and don't get much roll-out forward from either of them, mostly because they get smacked with a 620 MB or SM6 52 or SM6 58.

But last wkend, 140yd test Par 3 over a pond.  I hit a baby draw using 7i, into a breeze, DASH hit right of pin, checked and dribbled left towards pin about 6' +/- from pin, and that was a lot of roll-out for me.

At some point, someone will reveal that this is a parody account and it will be the best gag ever on GolfWRX.

What are y'all talking about?

Seriously though, do you expect to stop a 7 or 6, or plan for x rollout?

What club is the biggest you expect to stop?

On the average green I play in Arizona, I expect a 7 iron (180 carry, Bridgestone Tour BX) to stop within a yard or two of where it lands.

I do not expect a 6 or 7 to stop as I am not a high spin player and my clubs greens are pretty firm. PW/9i will typically stop within a yard or two, beyond that it get's more variable. Especially with wind and/or flier lies (which are common).

I expect a PW to generally release 5 yards and a 7 iron to generally release 10 yards.

I tend to swing 7 iron about 96mph and hit my irons about 110-115 feet high with about 1000rpm spin per club number.

Assuming ideal conditions, moist but not wet greens, mowed normally, what's the biggest club you expect to mostly stop?

I hit a fairly high ball and a 7 iron for me stops pretty well.. the ball I play makes a big difference as well.. I stopped playing junk I find.. mixed with my stock of z stars.. this year  I went to only pro v... I find it makes a difference as I have some idea as to what the ball will do as long as i put a decent swing on it

Where I play makes a difference as well.. if the greens are hard as a rock.. I don't expect as much stopping power

I expect everything up to a 5 iron to stop dead or within a yard if well struck, unless the greens are particularly firm. I would call myself a very high spin player though.

You must have concrete greens...at that speed and spin you would have greater than PGA tour avg landing angles
