No Artisan Putters at a Tournament in the Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

I just came back from an Invitational Tournament on the Northern Oregon Coast. A weeklong match play event for Men and Women. I did not see a single artisan putter.

It’s not all that surprising. I haven’t played with anyone with one in years.

On the airplane ride back to Phoenix I found myself thinking arrow or Indian? Would have putted any different if I was using one of my Ping Anser Putters instead of the Copper Plated Scotty Cameron Newport?

I putted well enough to play all week so are my paths to improved putting all down to practice, the stuff I see and mental approach?

Wait. So you didn’t use an Artisan putter at the tournament? Do you own an Artisan putter and sometimes use it? I’m now a little confused about the Artisan portion of this thread. And I still laugh every time I see @FlashinLeather’s Simpsons brothel post.

I rarely see anyone use any brand of putter except for Odyssey, Taylormade, Ping, or Scotty Cameron. I did, however, play with this older guy on a local Municipal course who used an older Yes putter. He shot a 72. None of his shots were that impressive, but he didn’t mess anything up at all and he made a ton of putts.

That's all I usually see except I did see an edel once. Another time I was using a Byron Morgan and he thought it was just some off brand putter. Most people don't bother with boutique putters, they just want to get away from the wife and drink

You just reminded me. There was a guy using the Edel Brick putter in a group behind me two years ago. I was blown away when I saw it. But…at that time you could buy that putter at the Golf Galaxy near me. So, nothing that unique. That guy stunk at golf, so I don’t recommend the Edel Brick. Maybe it was the putter, or maybe it was just him. Hard to say since I just caught a snapshot of a few crappy shots and putts from a distance.

At my home course the greens are so lousy that it's hard to pay attention to what putters other people are using.

Do people putt better with artisan putters? I mean, if you need a unique spec ... but I though it was more about the collectibility and them being works of art.

The actual brand Artisan? Or just “artisan”, like “boutique”? I’ve never actually tried out an Artisan putter. I’ve tried a lot of boutique putters though. I definitely putt better with my boutique putters than an Odyssey Works 1W. That was the last OTR putter I bought and it absolutely was not right for me. There was no sweet spot on it. Every putt clicked like a miss. Or maybe I just missed the sweet spot on every putt with it…but…I have a buddy who has an Odyssey two ball with that same insert. His putts make the same sound that mine did. He’s a better iron player than I am, but I definitely putt better than him.

I like custom, cool stuff as much as anybody- however, use what allows you to enjoy the game the most. You just need to make the decision as to where priorities lie in the game  The decision to use either custom, fancy stuff or what allows you to play best game is neither mutually exclusive nor a binary one.

Both the Byron Morgan putters I have now have been custom made for me with my specs. I had both made with a flow neck (long pipe neck) about a shaft offset.  They're both at 71 degree lie, 34" and, IIRC, between 3 and 4 degrees loft.  While my specs might be fairly common, Byron worked with me at his old Huntington Beach shop to dial the specs in.  I haven't putted this well since I was 24 putting for skins against my youngster college golf teammates.  I won my fair share back then. 😉

🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️ I do. As a lefty specs that I putt best with don't exist for OTR putters so I have to buy boutique putters new or used.

John Hatfield at Artisan makes outstanding putters. I've had mine for a year and a half and it's more than paid for itself. The fitting process was amazing and he had it to me in six weeks. I will never need to buy another putter again. Nice to have that part of the game sewn up.

I’ve heard many good things about Artisan putters and I’ve always wanted one. I may buy one someday. For now, I just own artisan 👩‍🎨 putters (e.g., Bellum Winmore, Byron Morgan, Lajosi 🦎, and TP Mills). How many different face milling options does Artisan offer? I’ve only ever seen Artisan’s standard waterfall 💦 style milling, but it looks sweet. The artisan 👩‍🎨 putters I own generally all have different face milling (e.g., true spiral 🌀, twilight 🌙, serrated v grooves 🔪, micro swirl 🚽).

In addition to artisan putters (I am pretty sure OP meant lower case artisan, as in small brands, not capital Artisan the company), I also find it rare at tournaments or big resort courses to see:

-BB&F ferrules

-Linksmaster golf bags

-Swag headcovers

-TBC gear

We have to remember that this stuff and the people who post on sites like golfwrx are a very small subsegment of the golf market.

Not sure how many face millings. Send an email to John at the info line and he will answer.

Or you are taking the comments seriously of someone who uses their old Microsoft Developer user name in other places on the web since the late eighties. Shart1 to 4 were taken and I consider 5 unlucky so I chose 6. I can always start using my notorius  audio user name Rt66indierock or my real name. I have nothing to hide in golf except maybe this.
