Ping G's are still a cheat code

I have i210s down to the 4 iron (22.5*) and I keep wondering about getting a G425 4 iron, with either the standard or power spec loft (20.5 or 19*) rather than a crossover/utility, to go between the i210 4 iron and my 5 wood.

Anyone done that, or have any thoughts on whether that would be a good option?

Having owned both sets, the i210 4 iron is stupid easy to hit. I thought about using G410 4 iron in that slot but no need. I actually ended up grabbing an i210 3 iron and it might be my favourite club in the bag.

The G410’s are great irons. Super easy to hit. My first set of real irons were the G5’s and as I improved, I went to blades and smaller headed irons which were fun to play but my scores were stagnant. Went back to Ping and my scores have dropped as did my handicap. Got me to single digits this year.

Ping G irons should be on everyone’s short list regardless of capability.   They just work.

Problem is when you hit two flush and one 8 iron goes 170 and the next goes 180.

Problem arises when you don't realize which way the wind is blowing. :classic_biggrin:

Unless I see it proven on Iron Byron with the exact same swing every time, I am not buying the flier claims often asserted. Have never had any more of a flier issue with the G series versus any other club, including blades. Catch a flier lie with a blade and then pull it a little too and it will go longer than normal, and that ain’t no hotspot problem. It’s me. I wish my swing was 100 percent the same all the time. It’s not.

I think players don’t really know what their dynamic loft is at impact from shot to shot and inconsistency there creates inconsistent distances regardless of the club. Handsy arm swings (as seen in most amateurs) that flip at impact present a different loft at impact all the time.

I agree, balls struck in the middle of the face with any kind of club are going to go consistent distances. The idea that a ball struck in the middle of the face with the same swing is going to go 165 one shot and 180 the next is not based in reality

I do think some clubs have better forgiveness outside of the sweet spot than others. Especially high on the face where mass can be different and you can get some wonky spin conditions

However often this just results in mishits going further than anticipated, and this is almost never a bad thing. If a mishit goes closer to the distance you wanted to hit it--This is usually good.

There are very few people on WRX who hit it an iron precisely on the same spot every time.  Even fewer in this thread.

That isn't to say that if you took 100 "identical" 7 iron heads, that you wouldn't get a slight variance in distances from a precise center hit.  I think you could say that of an OEM's clubs.  Varying distances with the same club is going to come down to operator error.

This thread got me to shelf (ultimately sold) my 716 AP2's.  Similar MtlJeff (though he went to the dark side with PXG blades right now), I went with 5-SW (didn't do a 4 iron at 20.5* and me being a 12 handicap) with the G410's.  Anyone have any suggestions on hybrids between the 5 iron and my 3 wood?  I have some older Taylormade Rescue 09 TP's at 19* and 22* that I could use.  I'm sort of itching to update those, but I also don't have much of a desire to spend $250-300 on a "gapping" club so to speak.  I'd consider some new stuff that's discounted (ex. TEE C721, etc.).  I was considering some 816 H1's as well.  Any suggestions?  The idea of adjustability seems like it may not be a bad thing to gap these right, but isn't 100% necessary.

Have you considered a 5-wood or a 7-wood between irons and 3-wood?

I have G400 fairway woods, and they are great. Later G models are probably even better!

I’ve always liked hybrids and hit them well. I can tend to be steep as well so I always found them a little easier to hit and more versatile.

A lot going back to the 70's..'

Hogan's, Wilson FG 17, Powerbilt, Titleist Tour's, Wilson FG 51, more Hogan Apex, Ram, Diawa Monodyne and likely 1/2 dozen more I can't remember.  Still have the FG-51's and a set of Hogan 2003 Apex Clam Shells (bought for $40 - almost new) just to look at every once in a while.  Blades ended for me in '93 with the Lynx Parallax irons.  Never looked back.

Edit: those are just some that I owned.  Since I worked in the industry, I hit almost every blade that ever came out from 1980-2015.  I only picked 2015 because I stopped hitting all the new shiny stuff at some point because I knew it was pointless.

^^^ it's just a personal anecdote from me but i really don't have any major issues with the short irons in the Gs. I actually play them through SW. I find i can be pretty precise, and hit them off various lies

I made 2 birdies in my round today and both were knockdown 9 irons with a little draw, the type of precision shot you worry about sometimes with stuff like this

I draw the line at LW, where i use my Vokey with this set

I have G410s and bought a matching SW. Did you have any issues hitting it or lies around the green or out of bunkers? It seems like it would be “cheating” as well. Look at what Sam Burns did with the AW and then Dylan Fritelli did having a AW and SW that match his iron set.

I never really used my G's for touch shots ---Always had a separate LW for that sort of thing. Sorry, no good stories to tell--i never really was confident with them for greenside stuff

I had a full set of the G irons all the way up to the LW. Can't say I ever found them to have "hot spots" or any of that nonsense when used around the green. I did however find that when I switched back to Vokey wedges instead of the G set wedges my bunker game improved somewhat. For me, really out of sand is the only place the higher lofted G clubs were less than optimal but then again I don't have a very sophisticated wedge game.

Those were the first modern, high COR face set of irons I ever used and even though I've switched through several subsequent sets and I don't think any of them have performed particularly better than the Ping G irons. The G irons really were a "cheat code" improvement on the irons I used before, though.

Has anyone had their G’s reshafted with Recoils? Any comments or thoughts?

I’ve been really enjoying my G410s and have had the time the last couple months to go hit balls almost daily. The only issue, I now I have tendinitis in my elbow. Because of the cost of shafts I figured eh I’ll just get some other set with Recoils and it’ll be fine. Turns out I like the shafts, but I miss the G heads. They are so darn forgiving and easy to hit. With a 2.5 and 5 year old, making the game any easier is   100% for me!  The cost of the shafts, grips, and install seemed to be not worth it given the value of the iron set. Now I’m thinking it would have been better money spent.

Thoughts on a reshaft? Does Ping offer this? I actually got these G410s new mainly because of this thread last year.

I bought off a set of Ping G driver and woods and hybrids and G30 irons for my sister in law. One set with a tour bag for $400 Canadian. What a deal. lol The guy selling said he was flooded by offers and I was the lucky guy who emailed him first. Some one tried to offer him more $$$ but he honored my inquiry. What a guy! I tried the G30 irons which has graphite shafts from G20 irons by the looks of it. I was blown away at how easy these are to hit. I have been a Ping driver guy but never liked the irons because of how they look.

I have been switching from one iron to another after my 714 Ap1 and can't seem to find the one. I looked at Ebay and holy cow the G30 irons are still expensive.

I tried a dispersion test on Sky Trak with the longer irons and from 6 iron to 4 iron, to simulate layups on very tight holes and they were all inside 30 yards. And it was ridiculous at how easy they were to hit. I felt like I was ready for the tour after. lol The hybrids were also phenomenal, I cannot complain with what I saw on the monitor. What is funny is that I can hit the irons with a very lazy swing to the hardest swing I can do and still the dispersion are very much small. I just sold my 2019 T300's and as much as I love them, I seem to like the G30 more.

Now I am thinking that my next iron set will definitely be a Ping G range.

Almost 2 years later. After a lot of irons owned and sold. I ended up with a set of Ping G irons. My goodness, these irons are so easy to use.
