I love my G400 irons.  Almost no surprises from them.  Every good hit with them turns out good.  The only surprises are some bad hits turn out good, too.  I love the progressive offset.  Weird thing is that I over draw blades but hit offset shovels dead straight.  No problem stopping the ball on the green with 5 on up.  I can't stop the 4i on the green but think that would apply to any iron.  I play my G400 from 4 all the way to SW.  Hit the SW great so no reason for me to kick it out for a specialty wedge.

There isn't all that much difference in forgiveness terms between the i210 and G15.  In fact, the MOI of the i210 is very marginally higher.

But...

The CG of the i210 is quite a bit higher.  Depending on how you hit them, it could have significance for you.

Half baked theory...  I wonder if the CG on the i210 is jacked higher to address the "hotspot thing."  It seems that's related to above-the-CG contact, which produces lower spin thanks to vertical gear effect.  Essentially, a flier, without the usual, in the rough, cause.  (Again, it's just a personal theory 😉)

I got the I210 because I couldn't hold a green with the G15s from 150 and in to save my life.  The i210 launched higher for me and greatly increased my spin numbers.   I'm actually holding greens now.  I've consistently knocked about 7-8 strokes off my score.   Do they fly as far as the G15's?  Maybe not but the extra spin and better scoring were worth it.   I still take the G15s out on the course every so often.

PXG XG = 42 degree PW

Ping G425 = 44.5 degree PW

I bent my 410 PW to 45 so the lofts flow evenly in 5 degree increments into my Glide wedges.

If the PXG's were 44 it would be okay to bend weaker, but I don't want to bend 3 degrees considering the considerable bounce on the clubs already.

My post was tongue and cheek. Mtljeff would be better suited to the P version of PXG I agree.

Interesting thread to read, from a mid-capper who's been fielding Ping Raptures for years and years now. I have no complaints about these irons, they just flat out work.

Lately I have been tempted to try i210's, but with limited funds it doesn't make sense for me to make the jump right now. Knowing that others, who are much better golfers then I, are still in love with these older Ping irons helps to talk myself out of trying i210's (for now anyways).

Just do what I did. Instead of 5-PW you just order 6-GW. Now I will still have to go from 50/54 to 52/56 but not a huge deal.

I completely agree that there are GI irons, and there are Ping G irons - the latter are just a cut above.

I play blades - currently in MP20s, but anytime I want to make the game easier, I head straight to the Ping aisle and look for the latest version of the Gs. The look at address is comforting. They look great. They’re extremely consistent. I even like the way they feel!

I'm not mentally ready to make that jump.  I used to play 2-PW and 5-GW took me a good while to get acclimated to.

I like to check the MOI numbers in Maltby's MPF.  They finally surpassed the Zings level of forgiveness with the G30, but the G410 and G710 have taken that to a ridiculous level.

Because I'm not getting any younger (grandparenthood has hit), I've given thought to picking up something more forgiving than my Rams.  I don't *need* it yet, but I can see it coming.

One thing that's prevented me before now is my experience with my friends' G series irons.  I could play them fine in the long irons, but the short irons were all kinds of problems.  Used to balloon them in the slightest wind.  No bueno.

Don't have the junk in the trunk that I used to, so it's something that could happen.  Maybe I'll pit stop with the i200 or i210 first.  LOL

Same here. My wife has a set of G5’s that I tinker with from time to time. I’m actually pretty good around the greens with the SW from that set. The wedges are very good for me on full swings. The Gs are the one GI set where I feel like the sole design and bounce don’t hinder me.

When I had some i210's, they lost notable yardage when I hit them high on the club face.  On the other hand, my G425's do not.  Likely because of the lower spin thing you mention.

The CGs for both irons are nearly in the same place, I wouldn't expect a difference like that.  It could be MOI; the difference in MOI between the G425 and the i210 is close to the difference between the i210 and the Mizuno MP-4.

That's interesting.  That's one of the biggest differences I've noted in comparing the i210's and the G425's.  The G425's are much less penalizing on shots hit high on the club face, for me anyway.  Actually, they're much less penalizing on ANY mishit compared to the i210's, and the i210's were already very forgiving for their type of club.  Must be the difference in MOI, as you stated.

The main reason I don't look OEM anymore, as the shaft options for SGI are lightweight steel ~ 100g or less or a crappy lightweight graphite.  They've essentially taken away any reasonable option for those of us who like heavy steel and lots of forgiveness.

I will say though i just wish Ping would offer more shafts....I guess the G's are pretty cheap so you wouldn't expect tons of them. But the Forged TEC were 1399 CAD, and you could get Modus 130s with them

I'd love to try a set of G's like the G425 with Modus 130s. I could hit them even higher without ballooning.

Ping offers plenty of shafts. May be an upcharge but they're there.

I ordered mine back in '12 with DG S300s.

My Glide Pros have DGs in them as well but this year the newer version has a lighter weight ZZ(?)-115 in them. At least that's all that's on the racks right now.

They shot me back an email telling me the DGs were still available in them. There's a link on their site with all the different shaft offerings.

Don't know about now. I would guess (hope ?) they wouldn't upcharge for the new Forged Pros @$200 per but,,,,,,,,, Dunno1.gif

@MtlJeff have you ever tried the i200/210’s ?  Was curious if so how they compared to the G410’s  for you.

also what other G series irons have you tried ? Any major differences in them ?

i have always played hybrid type irons (Cleveland Altitude, Cobra T-Rail) but switched to the i200’s this season and like them.  Shot my personal best -2 with them. But not playing as much has shown my weaknesses in iron play. Recently took out a G 6i I had in the basement and hit it well. So it had me wondering.

I have used a lot of irons over the years, perhaps none more passionately than my G15's some time ago. After that i went away from them a bit, played Mizuno forged JPX's a few years, then Apex Pros....Before finally ordering G410's again (and playing those a season before ordering Forged TECs)

So yea, i like buying stuff.

This is the first year i've LEGIT played Ping G's and another set concurrently, swapping them out constantly. I've played 30+ rounds each with the G's and the Forged TECs this year. The thing is--The Forged TECs are actually really forgiving! And they are much better looking and feeling clubs. That being said, i am once again moving full time into Ping G land. I just can't resist it. They are just too much easier to play.

This isn't about blades vs cavities or SGIs. No one realistically is debating a blade or a big GI club. This is talking about Ping G's vs run of the mill forgiving clubs. Again, Ping G's are an absolute cheat code, i don't care what your index is

-They launch the ball miles high, and this has value to holding greens. I can probably apex my 4 and 5 iron a good 15-20% higher with the G's than my Forged TECs. There's a 210-220yd par 3 to an elevated, flat small green at my club. 90% of the time i've hit it in reg has been with the Pings, this is not a coincidence.

-They are less "workable" but you can still hit draws and fades. An advantage of this is that your mishits fly straighter. They just really do---And even a low index like a 0.7 has a lot of mishits. Multiple times this year (often after playing the previous day with the Cobra) i have hit like a 5 or 6 iron and been upset, only to have the ball still hold a corner of the green

-I have 9 rounds of 72 or better this year --7 of them were with the Pings. Coincidence? Could be but it's interesting.

they are ugly and they feel like a*s. But Ping G's are amazing. I am back on the wagon people, the Cobras are going in the garage , and the goal is to play the G410s all of next season. If you are on the fence about trying a big hideous club, just do it!

Jeff

I tried to take my G410s back from my son.  He gave me the Bruce Lee death stare.  He said, "Not on you life dad.  These are awesome!"

For the most part i don't think there are huge differences between them. But i've never compared them head to head, i haven't hit the G15's in probably 8-9 years.

I've considered I210s but i guess i don't see the value prop. I'm not sure what shots they would allow me to hit that the G's don't. And they look a little nicer i guess but i already have my Forged TECs which are very similar
