Ping G's are still a cheat code

@MtlJeff have you ever tried the i200/210’s ?  Was curious if so how they compared to the G410’s  for you.

also what other G series irons have you tried ? Any major differences in them ?

i have always played hybrid type irons (Cleveland Altitude, Cobra T-Rail) but switched to the i200’s this season and like them.  Shot my personal best -2 with them. But not playing as much has shown my weaknesses in iron play. Recently took out a G 6i I had in the basement and hit it well. So it had me wondering.

I have sets of G425's and i210's with identical setups, other than the i210 are Power Spec lofts.  I just got the i210, but took them out yesterday for a round (after playing Saturday with my G425's).  Both are very smooth with Steelfibers.  It was windier yesterday with the i210, so when I came up short on a couple of holes, I think it was more that than any sort of difference in forgiveness.  I essentially shot the same score Saturday and Sunday.

Both are fantastic sets.  i210 look a bit better, feel a bit better, and are a bit less forgiving.  I am certainly a much higher handicap than MtlJeff, and I could certainly play the i210 regularly and not lose much compared to the G425's.  But no question, there is something that will always be special about the Ping G-series irons, and how forgiving they are, and especially with the newer releases, how good they look as well.  These are not your G10, G15, G20 sort of iron, and I have played all of those as well.  YMMV.

So I knew I needed more forgiving irons. I have a two kids under 4. Been playing 716 AP2’s. Love the look and feel. But this thread led me to order some 410’s. Took my 4 year old to the par 3 course today and totally hit one off the toe. The dang thing ended up on the fringe short. These really are like cheating. I also hit one a little thin. I watch it fly and I’m waiting for it to drop from it’s apex. They just hang in the air forever. Great clubs. I went 5-SW.

What are others doing at the top of the bag say between 5i and 16.5* 3 wood?

I have a 16.5 3hl then go down into a 19 degree hybrid or five wood (depending on conditions) before my g410 4 iron which is stupidly easy to hit.

Love my g410s, had them two years now and with how little I get to practice with work, my child and my new dog they’ve kept my handicap steady this year. Lost count the amount of times I’ve whiffed one to see it grab the edge of the green.

I play G425s, but I think they are the same loft as your G410s.

I took out my longest iron (same loft as your 5i) years ago, and added a 7w. Best thing I've ever done. Goes the same distance as the iron I took out.

Then I have 5w, gaps nicely between 7w and 3w.

I go 4 iron through SW

In midsummer i use a G400 crossover, but in the fall i tend to use a Apex Hybrid for extra distance. Both are 20-21 degrees.

My 3 wood is a 13.5 degree

So i have a big gap but i rarely need to hit a ball like 230-240. I hit my hybrid like 225 and my 3 wood around 250.

Thanks.  I'm trying to determine if I need two clubs in between my 16.5 3HL and the 23.5 5 iron.  If I don't, I have room for some sort of extra club.  I've only played once with these but is the gapping in the wedges good?  4.5 & 5 gaps in the PW, UW, SW make me wonder if they'll be 15 yard gaps or 20.

So with your gapping you have two 24* lofted clubs with the 5 iron and 24* hybrid?

I played the g25s for six years continuously. Great clubs. The only thing that got them out the bag was the g410s gave me more accuracy and I was hitting a club less (yes I know the lofts are stronger).

Sorry. My sig is confusing.

I have two hybrids. A 21º set to 20º, and a 23.5º set to 24º. Then the 26º 5 iron. So essentially... a 20/24 hybrid set up.

Even if the numbers aren't spaced evenly, this combo is perfect for me.

  • 2 months later...

I bought off a set of Ping G driver and woods and hybrids and G30 irons for my sister in law. One set with a tour bag for $400 Canadian. What a deal. lol The guy selling said he was flooded by offers and I was the lucky guy who emailed him first. Some one tried to offer him more $$$ but he honored my inquiry. What a guy! I tried the G30 irons which has graphite shafts from G20 irons by the looks of it. I was blown away at how easy these are to hit. I have been a Ping driver guy but never liked the irons because of how they look.

I have been switching from one iron to another after my 714 Ap1 and can't seem to find the one. I looked at Ebay and holy cow the G30 irons are still expensive.

I tried a dispersion test on Sky Trak with the longer irons and from 6 iron to 4 iron, to simulate layups on very tight holes and they were all inside 30 yards. And it was ridiculous at how easy they were to hit. I felt like I was ready for the tour after. lol The hybrids were also phenomenal, I cannot complain with what I saw on the monitor. What is funny is that I can hit the irons with a very lazy swing to the hardest swing I can do and still the dispersion are very much small. I just sold my 2019 T300's and as much as I love them, I seem to like the G30 more.

Now I am thinking that my next iron set will definitely be a Ping G range.

Have you tried PXG irons... they are quite similar but look and feel better.

I've used the Gs and although good, I found them inferior to my current set of PXGs.

Here’s the thing with G series irons… whenever you see a set in another person’s bag, you have no idea what kind of player he is. They work for every level golfer, and when you see someone playing them, there’s a certain cache about them that’s different than other SGI clubs.

If we’re being honest here, if a friend or relative fairly new to the game asked for advice about an iron set that they could play from beginner to single digit, the G series would quickly come to mind for most of us.

For myself the G25’s were an all time favorite, once Ping went away from the tumbled finish and unfinished hosel, the G’s lost a lot of appeal.

I was between a set of 425’s and the XP’s I’m playing now when it came time to buy new irons. To my surprise it wasn’t a close fight.

The XP’s looked and felt better, they were more forgiving and went further, and cost less. At first I was surprised how good they were, then I read about how much Ping DNA there is in the PXGs and it made sense.

I like to check the MOI numbers in Maltby's MPF.  They finally surpassed the Zings level of forgiveness with the G30, but the G410 and G710 have taken that to a ridiculous level.

Because I'm not getting any younger (grandparenthood has hit), I've given thought to picking up something more forgiving than my Rams.  I don't *need* it yet, but I can see it coming.

One thing that's prevented me before now is my experience with my friends' G series irons.  I could play them fine in the long irons, but the short irons were all kinds of problems.  Used to balloon them in the slightest wind.  No bueno.

Don't have the junk in the trunk that I used to, so it's something that could happen.  Maybe I'll pit stop with the i200 or i210 first.  LOL

Yeah, the 410’s have a very high MPF.  But, the 425’s really dropped by comparison.  I liked the 410’s and they still hold their value well.

I have i210s down to the 4 iron (22.5*) and I keep wondering about getting a G425 4 iron, with either the standard or power spec loft (20.5 or 19*) rather than a crossover/utility, to go between the i210 4 iron and my 5 wood.

Anyone done that, or have any thoughts on whether that would be a good option?
