Make the ball bigger. The old British ball that was 1:62” used to go farther than than the current 1.68”. The only change to golf courses would be 18 new cups which would have to be re-sized in ratio to the ball.

Yes.  It has been discussed. Everyone was very excited by the prospect of playing a larger ball in windy conditions.  The UK folks were especially thrilled as were the OEMs that produce hole cutting tools.

And he's one of the longest on tour.......the course is a little over 7100 yards.

Tom Watson joined the Tour in 1971.  Funny, that is 50 years ago.  Tom was supported by his father and a group of his father's friends for his first few years on Tour, until he was able to pay them back, and then some.

PGA National, where they are playing the Honda, is a tricked up golf course with lots of water.  And lots of pros hitting it into the water (could this be a reason that most of the best players skip this event?).   Just like growing the rough very high, lining fairways and green sides with water is one way to keep scoring down.  This is a course that you might play once or twice because the pros play it, but you would hate to play it if it was your home course.  Unless you were a masochist.

If a person hits the ball 350 and another hits it 275, who loses more distance if you roll back 10%?

Not if they have the same scoring average. There are guys on tour that average around 280 off the tee that have better scoring averages then guys that hit it well over 300+.

Doesn’t matter since the object is still to get the ball into the hole.

The 350 guys loses 35 yards, and the 275 guy loses 27-1/2 yards.  I'm not sure about the importance of that distinction, but I do know that the course would play differently.  And that is the point.

If the goal is to bring more shorter courses back into play, then equipment changes are most likely the answer. If the goal is to curtail the advantage of extreme distance then courses should stop the fairway at 300 yards out and resume it 360 yards out. Another thing is narrow the fairway the farther out it goes and put legit 3-4” rough in.
