How FAST can you walk 18?

FormerBigDaddy

Recommended Posts

I recently played 18 with another player.  We're both 9 handicap..

I walked and he rode..  We were able to finish in about 2 hours comfortable.. and I walked around 8000 steps (According to my Samsung Galaxy Watch) with a cart..

When we play in a 4 some  and I would be the only one walking. it takes about 4-4 and 1/2 hours to finish..

I guess I got punished for bragging about my speed. First really nice sunny warm day of the year today, packed course, normal group. Over 5 hours lol.

My playing partners are sloths.

We got out last Wednesday here for a round starting just after noon. Here in SoCal it rained HARD all day Tuesday and half of Wednesday, but was JUST clearing up when we teed off. I was there about 30 minutes early and nobody was on the first tee that entire time before we started. We were a threesome.

I will say that conditions made for a bit of a slog. Every step was sloshy. There was casual water EVERYWHERE on the course. We must have taken casual water relief at least a dozen times between the three of us.

But holy crap... How can a threesome still take 4 hours to get around the course when there's nobody in front of us? We even had a twosome catch us and let them play through on #8. I get that we're all terrible golfers, but I at least have the ability to be terrible quickly.

Usually their pace isn't a problem because courses around here are always so backed up that we can keep up with the group in front, but after this if we're ever lagging I'll be getting on them HARD over it because there's no excuse for a threesome to take 4 hours to get around an empty course.

Odd experience this morning, but it seems to be becoming more prevalent. I had the 2nd tee time of the day, playing as a single behind a foursome. Got to the starter's hut a little early, and asked if I could go out in front of the foursome. He tells me no, because I'm walking and they're riding. Huh? I tell him that I can walk a leisurely round in 3 hours or less, and he looks at me puzzled. Seriously, some course workers really need to get out more often.

Probably the closest thing for me happened this evening, nobody in front of me, greens and tees close together, walking at a pretty good pace, only lost 1 ball. My scoring app says 1:51 for 9. Now,  I would guesstimate that it took about 90 mins as I had played 10 and teed off on 11 before rain started to come down and I didn't hit finish round until I was back in the car. I could maybe get that down to 75-80 minutes with better course knowledge and less military golf.

My home course, I just don't think I can do it in under 90 minutes, there's almost always someone to wait for and I'm not a morning person, so if I was part of the first group my body would probably take awhile to wake up and start hitting good shots.

Never timed myself.
once i was allowed  on the course as a single and was able to past 6 groups of slow 4 some golfers by the time I reached 18.  I figure it was likely 5 hours if I played behind everyone but likely cut it down to under 3 hours. I was playing one ball. Hit it straight on the fairway and did practice or fool around putting on the green

My home course is a 5800 yard par 70 from the back tees. It's Vermont, so it's pretty hilly, especially the back 9. My weekend group gets out about 90 minutes after tee times start, we all walk, and we usually play in about 3:50 when we're in foursomes. 2 weeks ago I got paired up with one guy who is 82 and one who is 76. We walked 18 in 3:26, I was hella impressed with those guys. Solo, times I can get out when the course is quiet, 2:15 for 18 is not a rush.

It actually happened today, I basically had the course to myself! I didn't chop it around really, I did use a couple mulligans on some putts as I was trying a new ball. I got around in 90 minutes and that was with hitting down on a hole so I wouldn't have to walk up a big hill again. I could maybe get it down to 80-85 but that would take the ultimate perfect storm of playing great, almost running, and nobody on the course.

I can walk a solo round my home course in just over 2 hours if I'm trying to play fast or about 2-1/2 just relaxing and taking my time.

But today the heat index was 95F when I teed off and 101F when I finished. I played in 3 hours, 2 minutes and it felt like one of those exhausting 2-hour speed golf rounds.

I did have to take a 5-6 minute cool-down break in the middle of the back nine. There's a shady spot where I can park my Speed Cart, soak a towel in ice water and drape it over my head and neck and just chill out for a few minutes while I tank up on several cups of water. It's amazing how much more enjoyable that makes the last few holes on a hot, sweaty day.

I guess my days of playing quickly are over until the weather cools down in September! For now 3 hours is the new 2 hours.

Happened again this morning. The starter told me to head out as a single, a couple of holes behind a twosome. As I was getting ready to tee off a threesome drove up and asked me if they could head out in front of me bacause I was walking. Huh? Seriously, are there that many slow walkers that it's common for a threesome to play faster? Anyway, I informed them that I'd be playing in approximately two and a half hours, and they looked surprised, and told me to go ahead. Oy. Finished the round in 2:40.

The quickest I’ve ever walked 18 is 2:10 but when I get the first tee time, my buddy and I generally walk in about 2:30-2:45. We’ve gotten the same dose of stupid from starters and pro shop jocks as Argonne. The room temperature IQ golf course employees certainly are…something.

I played on my local course the other day with nobody in front of me. I was husting to finish before dark and was playing well (something like 70% GIR so I wasn't wasting time).

I got through the round in 3:08, but that is a long 8.2 mile walk. There are several holes that are split between rows of houses. I was hustling.

If I were only walking and not golfing that distance at a brisk clip, it would be right at 2 hours.
