How FAST can you walk 18?

FormerBigDaddy

Recommended Posts

Many, MANY years ago, I got to the course with about 45 minutes before they closed the 10th tee. Nobody around late on a weekday. Relatively easy course and I was able to get there on time. Then took 1:15 to finish the back before it got dark.

Now- saying that- I am NEVER in any rush to finish 'fast', just for the sake of being fast. If I'm alone and it takes 3-4 hours- fine. If it only takes 2-3 hrs, that's fine, too. I don't see the point of just playing fast for fast's sake. If I have other things to do, then I'll do them. Not rush off to the course to try and squeeze in 18 holes in 2 hours THEN do the other things. I'll do the other things, THEN maybe go to the course and play so I'm not in a rush to DO anything.

I was talking about merely the time from putting my hand on the cart handle to the time I arrive at the ball, added up, and divided by the distance covered. Not including any actual golf activities. I contend that I should have no pushing my cart at >3 mph pace. Because I move fast, I think I'd be >=3.5 mph pace when actively moving.

Nope, I'm talking about walking time.  Just measure it! Stick your gps watch on your cart and have it stop measuring when the cart stops moving (most have that feature). That way it won't skew the totals with all the other activity.

Some real movers in here. I don’t think under 2 hours would be realistic for me without speed being the main concern. My old course was a compact parkland style layout with tees and greens close to the tees (a little longer walk from nine green to 10 tee).

This was a fairly leisurely pace, I honestly don’t remember if I ran into anyone out there or not (it was several years ago).

Here in western PA, the courses are not spread out — we don’t have the plethora of courses designed to sell homes that you see in areas where there was lots of population growth over the last 25 years. So the courses are pretty compact, but with the terrain, they are not flat!

My R knee has no patella, my L pelvis has 3 bolts the size of Sharpies in it, and my R foot has some nerve damage and less than 100% range. I cannot walk fast, but my pre shot routine is brief and I’m always ready to play. On foot with a Sunday bag, or full setup on a push cart, a round takes me roughly 3:30. Can’t do 3h flat, nope not today!

This thread would be a lot more entertaining if it was "How many beers can you drink in 18 holes."

I’d rather drink zero play in 2 hours and have them after. Though the real goal is to get a quick 18 in have brunch, settle bets, have a cocktail and get back out for an emergency 9 or 18. Much rather do that then sit waiting on the group in front of me for 5 hours

5 hours! 🤣 I feel sorry for you bud... I can't imagine having to endure a 5 hour round..

I walk in 3.5 hours, with my boys having a great time... talking smack, laughing, no worries outside of those nasty 4 footers...😅

My kind of thread!

Home club, combo tees: par71 6700, record is 2h, 18m, avg: 2.5h;  can shoot anywhere between 76-80. No putts given.

played with 2 other members last week, front 9 was complete in 1 hour, 15m.  The two members were over 60 and they can fly.  Barely put a tee down and the lady had already hit and was walking towards the fairway.  She was definitely a “no fcuks given” type of gal.

When playing 4 ball with the boys and walking, it usually takes us around 3.15-3.20(6900).  Riding takes about 3.45.  Pace of play at our club is really important.  Anything more than 4 hours on a 4 ball is a disaster.

7,040 yds. from tips / 1,760 yds. in mile = about 4 miles covered for round of golf.

Just walking, not carrying a bag or playing, probably 60 to 80 minutes on modestly hilly course.

Playing? That's a good question.  Half the courses I play don't allow walking.

In my 20s, given an open course with no speed-bump groups ahead, I could cover 18 in about 2.5 hours.

No estimate on how long it would take today on full course. For nine holes on local par 3 course (~1,200 yards), about 1 hr., 10 min. (carrying a bag with about 8 clubs).

At my home course, the number is about 2 hours, 15 minutes. But that's deliberately moving so fast I'm exhausted afterwards. A more comfortable "course is wide open ahead of me" pace is about 2-1/2 hours or slightly longer.

There's a very short, tight, compact course I play when I'm on vacation. Just over 6,000 yards from the tips, Par 70. It's also totally flat. So I've played nine holes in under an hour there a couple times during the off-season when it's wide open. Eighteen holes just over two hours including a quick bathroom and snack break at the turn. But again, that's walking fast enough I occasionally have to stop and catch my breath for a moment before hitting a shot.

I'm not always in the speed golf mood (although I often am). If I'm looking for a casual stroll instead of a power walk it'll take more like 2:50 or so for eighteen holes. That leaves plenty of time to figuratively stop and smell the roses along the way.

All these "crazy" players getting around in less than 2.5 hours. So where do courses get the idea that walkers slow down the pace? I can't even begin to count the number of arguments I've had with course staff that insist that I ride because of pace of play. I've found that players that prefer walking tend to know how quickly they can get around. Baffling.

I don't think anybody is averaging 3mph with a bag on their shoulder or pushing a cart. That's very optimistic.

Carrying a bag?  Maybe.  Depends upon physical condition.  But pushing or pulling a cart?  I'm not really in all that good a shape (though probably better than most my age), and I don't see pushing or pulling a cart slowing down my walking speed in the least, unless it was quite hilly.

I used to walk about a mile-and-a-half after lunch, at work, each workday. The last quarter mile (measured) was all uphill--and a fairly steep grade, at that.  When I was in top condition and not either in knee-deep snow or it was like a sauna outside, I could maintain a twenty minute mile--even with that uphill finish.  But my average was probably closer to twenty-five minutes in non-challenging weather conditions.

Given what I've read in this thread (and thanks for it, @FormerBigDaddy), it's clearly a mistaken one.

I'd long wondered about this.  It had occurred to me that, while carts move across the ground much faster than a walking speed, even a brisk pace, they have time penalties walkers do not, so it probably about evened-out.

That’s a self serving excuse with no basis in reality from people who simply consider golf carts an essential part of the game.

First, I haven't ran a step, anywhere for any reason, since I was a teenager so I'm only talking about walking briskly.

But second, yes I very much enjoy playing a round once in a while where I literally never stop moving. You ought to try it some kind if you're physically able. You don't overthink things, you don't stew over bad shots, you don't play indecisively, it's just a continuous flow of walking and hitting the ball. The ultimate form of hit the ball, find the ball, hit it again.

I wouldn't want to play in 2 hours every time out because that requires REALLY keeping up the pace and not having any downtime at all. But since I only rarely have a course wide open in front of me it's fun to indulge myself in a round like that a few times a year.

But I would give almost anything to be able to play without delay every day at my home course at a more leisurely pace of 2 hours, 30-40 minutes per round. Boy that would be nice. The game is so much more enjoyable without stopping to stand around a couple times a hole.

Agree completely. It’s about extra revenue AND the person running the check-in not being empowered to use some judgement.

However, it is equally silly and obnoxious to argue with the person running the check-in. I may not like it, but I’ll ask “hey even if I pay the cart fee can I walk?” If the answer is no, fine. I am not going to argue the point, berate the person, demonstrate my eloquence / airtight logic, and generally show my a**. That person is not enabled to make that decision and I’m not going to take out my irritation on him just to show how smart I am.

I almost always play with my group at my home track and almost always play in a group of 4 anywhere else. Getting in a round alone, without interruption is impossible in Toronto or GTA. I walk most of my rounds and can finish in 3-3.5 with normal traffic.

No more guessing.  Got to play solo today with nobody in front of me.

Did not run, but walked with purpose.  Raked 3 bunkers.  Read my putts.  Fixed my ball marks.  Putted out.  Waited for heart date to drop after the 2 big climbs.

Shot 78.  Played fine.

Really could only play faster if:

A)  walked/jogged faster

B)  put bag on the green

C)  played a little better.

Improvements above maybe would take 10 min max off.

It's confirmation bias. They will see a walker unavoidably taking longer than a cart rider to walk 220 yards from the tee to their ball in the fairway but then conveniently overlook the fact that in every single other part of the game the walker is faster. They confuse being able to speed along in brief bursts at 15mph with playing fast, notwithstanding the 4+ hours they spent doing things other than race down the fairway in their cart.
