What is a Mil-spec exactly?

Big Bri

Recommended Posts

What does MIL-SPEC mean?

Military Standard

MIL-SPEC (defense specification). The use of "milspec" is just the informal way of signifying that something meets a certain Military Standard (MIL-STD) or Military Specification (MIL-SPEC). Two examples of MIL-STD's used in our industry that we deal with often are MIL-STD-461F and MIL-STD-810G.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

i read someone saying that it's easier to align compared to the regular one but didn't really make sense.

marketing it is.

But to be fair the Mil-Spec line did have 3 different head weights and I'd assume it was basically if your putter says 340g it will be 340g, not just a stamp.

I've seen some people weigh the original Mil-Spec heads and have them be 5-7g heavier than the listed weight, so just good marketing. You can refinish an OG Mil-Spec and still have it weight more than the stamping.

Scotty cameron is releasing a new limited putter and it says it's a mil-spec.

what is a mil-spec? I can't seem to find an answer.

It's got the same lie and loft. is it just branding?

Other scotty cameron's mil-spec putters all seem the same as the regular versions.

https://www.scottycameron.com/archives/putters/2000/mil-spec/newport/

Scotty’s Mil-Spec was also notable for the hosel Notch

ie for easier lie-angle adjustments.

“The Newport Platinum Mil-Spec was a custom fit line that adapted for different length, lie and grip requirements, allowing Scotty to give golfers a custom profile. It featured four different weights, four different lengths, an array of grips and the Newport head, hosel and sightline, with the Tour-proven Pro Platinum finish. This line was as close as a golfer could come to a custom fit Cameron without visiting Scotty in his studio.“

It's just like his "GSS" as far as golf applications are concerned, all marketing hype. You need to differentiate yourself somehow, and when 99% of people don't bother understanding the marketing, it works.

As others have mentioned it does typically refer to military specifications standards and guidelines set for tolerances, and material composition for technical applications for uniformity and conformity across all acquisitions by the military. I believe the Army Corp of Engineers plays a major role in defining most of the MIL-SPEC's.

I’m not sure what mil-spec would signify nowadays.  Previously with the carbon steel lines, you couldn’t get different head weights to match with lengths, but now that seems to be a standard option across models.

Wow I want a FMJ putter now. I wish Scotty would at least incorporate some tech in his putter instead of just trying to market the putter as some premium commodity.

Most people in the millitary will tell you that a lot of their equipment is junk.  This isn't a bad reflection on them,  just the crummy procurement process and distribution.  We need to provide our fighting men and women with the best possible resources.   "Mil-Spec" is a bad joke these days.

LOL.  Funny you mention "Ruger Titanium" Stu.  I went to the Ruger plant in Prescott, AZ back in 2000 to work on a robot that was grinded the sole plates for the Big Bertha drivers after they were welded.  I think by then they were Great Big Bertha drivers.  The grandson of the owner was the plant manager.  I never received a tour of the gun manufacturing side.  After I fixed the robot the grandson took me through the gun manufacturing plant to a back storage room.  In that room was 1/2 of the "old man's" car collection.  I saw a variety of cars made by Rolls Royce, Stutz and a few other collectible makes.  The one that caught my eye was the 1958 Ferrari 250 Spyder.  Unfortunately the grandson wouldn't let me take that one for a spin.  😩  I could not live out my Ferris Bueller dream!  😁

So this is what I saw on the page, Relying on proven multi-material design methodology, the H22 Black Limited Proto's dark color palette is carried through from its precision milled 303 stainless steel body to its mil-spec, stencil-styled engraved 6061 aluminum sole plate anodized black.

All this is saying it's the 6061 is military grade which honestly means nothing. Aluminum 6061 is a specific grade of aluminum that is used in military application but it's just generally used in a lot of aviation. I bet they source it from a place that also does military do they just put it on there.

A putter milled from a piece of steel that was in service, finished and decorated as such, would be impressive.

Try to make a putter seem tacticool though, is pretty lame.

If you want Tacticool then Bettinardi has you covered

Being in Arizona, I always liked the fact that Ruger played a hand in some of the Callaway drivers.  Just a different view of a random marketing campaign.

I have to laugh though when Don says, "After those sell out, we'll restock again and again because these are limited."   Doesn't "limited" mean that there is a finite number of them that will be produced, even if they sell out?  Just asking for a friend who was not clear on the quote, 😉

In all fairness to SC the example you cited was not remilled. Black finish was added and new paint. I surprised it shows a losing weight at all.

At the time it originally came out, it was the closest most of us could get to a tour Cameron. Slightly thicker topline and while they looked similar, there were 3-4 versions with minor differences. This is counting the different head weights. The bumpers and topline transitions all were a little different and you will hear people term that as version 1,2,.....Solid feeling putters, but basically a satin chrome plated (pro platinum) carbon putter.

true,  just using that post to show the original head weight being over what the stamped weight was.
