Played with a 90 year old yesterday

Had a fantastic time with a great gent yesterday, superb stories, this guy was an old school warrior

 

- he shot 92

- he’s fully blind in one eye and partially in the other

- 15 capper

- won a few senior state am’s

- played college golf in the early 50’s and was a +2

- still hits it 200 with a driver at times

- made a birdie 

_ spent 10 days in the hospital with covid last year

- had a heart attack 4 months ago

- has 6 daughters

- made it to match play in the US Senior Am a handful of times

- never complained

- when I parked him too close to a green he’d chirp “I’m 90 not an invalid”

- there were only a few Haverkamp moments but they provided great comedic relief 

 

be nice to your elders, you could learn something

As someone who fully intends on meeting his maker while on a golf course, I have to say that is fantastic!  May I ask which course you were at?

Myself and a friend were playing as a twosome at a local muni. When we check in the starter says we'll be paired with another twosome and points to an older couple (late 70-early eighties) We kind of smirk to eachother and figure ok- it’s going to be a slower than usual round and we'll make the best of it. They were nice enough and the older gentleman teed off form the forward tees with his wife. Down the middle for both and basically on or around the green with a couple of extra strokes so they kept up fine and we were thrilled. He's the kicker...the women probably putted 22 times and I don’t think that I am exaggerating when I say this. She was money from everywhere. It was the most amazing putting displays I’ve ever seen man, woman, pro, whatever. We started to tease her about leaving her husband and marrying one of us but she declined. Her husband was laughing and said they travel and play a lot with other people and she does this all the time. I’ll never forget it.

- he has a girlfriend

- he’s won the club c 9 times

- when he was 75 he stopped counting how many times he’d broken his age, he was at 350

Always got to respect these super senior golfers.

 

I randomly watched this 80 year old from Japan. He turns better than a lot of golfers in their 40's and can still run around.

 

 

This Dutch 100 year old moves better than people in their 60's!

That was great. I love his comment about aboit not being an Invalid.  
 

I often play with an 88 year old member at our course.   He obeys the cart path onky rule to a T, when healthy 60 year olds blatantly ignore it because they “are seniors” 

 

He never complains about a thing. Always appreciative of the staff and still buying new clubs at 88.  Because “it’s fun”.    
 

in addition to all that he was a very successful man in his professional life.  So I love sharing a cart with him and hearing his experiences!

Regularly play with a guy who will be 92 this May.  I think he didn't start playing until he retired at 65.  Has as good a turn as anyone on the course and easily WALKS 9 holes on a flattish course with his clubs on a pull cart.  Makes a couple 70-somethings I play with look very old.

I love getting paired with people like the OP described. 

 

However, it seems like during the next one or two rounds after that, I always get paired with the opposite; an overweight, waddling 65 year old who has a beer glued in one hand and a cig in the other along with a negative, angry-at-the-world attitude. It's like a higher power is reminding me to take care of myself physically and mentally if I want a chance at being a 90 year old golfer.

A few years back my friend and I were paired up with a twosome at the course. The starter said I'm pairing you up with a father and son.

 

This guy comes over to us (about my age, around 60) and says I guess we are playing with you. I replied Where is your son? The guy laughs and says I'm the son. Dad is coming.. He says his dad is 89 and used to be a player. 

 

We head to the first tee and they stop at the white tees. I mention we play the senior tees one up from the whites. The son says I'll play with you guys but dad plays the white tees. 

 

We had a great time playing with them. After the round the son says I wish I could get dad to move up a set of tees but he won't. I said an 82 by your dad was a low score for the day so I guess he can play from where he wants.

I always enjoy it. I played with a guy around that age who had been playing at this 36 hole course for 60+ years when it was only 9 holes.  It was like getting a personal tour a he talked about how the course had changes throughout the years.  He also played with a hickory putter.

We have an 80 something at our course that no one wants to get paired with in events though I have no problem with it.

He complains, duffs and shuffles but is a real sweetheart... and can post an 80 at any time.  He KNOWS his end days and certainly his golf career are closing fast and I think it depresses him.

If no one pairs with him, what kind of "end" is that?  Be kind my friends.

We have a husband and wife, both north of 90 years old, who play at our club.  Legends.
