PXG Gen6? When?

Coloring doesn't impact performance, they'll perform the same...

I realize that….

I have never been crazy about the two-tone look in the Gen5 or Gen6 irons.

So if I can get the Gen4 (solid color) aesthetics with the benefits of the Gen6 head (which I do find better in every respect vs the Gen4) then it will be a win in my book.

What do you find better about the Gen 6 vs the 4? I think pxg nailed the look and feel on the Gen 4 by making it both more solid looking and feeling. Gen 3 and 5's were too mushy for me, and the 5 with the two tones that were purely cosmetic also didn't appeal to me visually. But the 6 looks better, so I'm wondering why you think performance is better too (I've not tried them)

Had a fitting today at the studio in mesa. Very impressed. I've been doing nothing but buying and swapping used clubs for a decade now other than the 902s i have now. (which i built) Might have to order up a set of the all chrome when they drop. Can honesty say its the first time i have been able to go though a bunch of shafts and see as well as feel the differences. Only disappointment was i was not able to hit the Modus which very well be the shaft i would go with.

I had a fitting for 311XP Gen 6 on Thursday, I really liked the irons and the fitting.  At the beginning of the year I had a fitting at Golf Galaxy and I ended up with Cleveland Launcher Halo XL, graphite, senior flex, 1* up, .5” long.

The PXG rep said no way should I be in senior flex and put me in regular flex, 2* up, also .5” long.  I’m having a difficult time dropping over $1700 for a set after spending what I did earlier in the year.

Seemed to have improved the dispersion and especially off the toe which is my primary miss.

Feel is excellent and softer than the Gen5, more like the Gen4.

More consistent distance and a bit more height and spin which to me makes them more accurate.

I did swap out the weights in my Gen6 to make them D4 in the 6-9 and D5 in the PW and GW so that may have a bearing on the “feel” difference as I played the Gen4 at D2 all the way though GW, both sets with Steelfiber FC115’s.

Ok thanks for the explanation. It's funny how perceptions of feel differ. Fwiw here's my take on PXG thru the years:

Gen 1, didn't really like the looks (ping eye2's with Frankenstein screws), but was interested in the buzz they created nonetheless. Tried a wedge and found it way too soft and squishy, but did like the ball flight and spin. Still not enough to pull trigger on full set

Gen 2, see Gen 1.

Gen 3, really liked the look from the back. Big improvement imo versus the 1 & 2. Still a bit soft but at least somewhat firmer, at least headed in right direction. At address though the offset was too much. (Btw this assumes the P were the rightful heirs to the Gen 1)

Gen 4, thought they absolutely nailed the look from the back, and also the excess offset was gone. Too me they felt firmer to the point they weren't at all squishy.

Gen 5, gawdy looking back with the race car look but I was willing to try them nonetheless. Back to the too squishy feel and the MOI was too high to the point they lost workability. In fact they felt like highest MOI clubs in the bag, which was just weird. I also thought blade length was a bit bigger than the 4's which I didnt need. But all that said if I couldn't play the 4's, I'd choose these.

Gen 6, have not tried but the all black bottom I find more acceptable cosmetically than the 5's. But I'm hearing they're very similar to the 5's in performance, so I feel no need to consider swapping out of the 4's.

I will admit that I am not a guy who has messed around with a ton of what people would consider to be the softest clubs, e.g. forged blades, but man are my Gen 4s soft. I had a set of i230s this year and barely want to hit them because of how soft the Gen 4s feel. If the Gen 6s are noticeably softer I'm glad I haven't had a chance to hit them because I know I'd spend the money.

Gen6 feel same as Gen5, which is between Gen3 & Gen4.

Nice to see the Gen 6 available in double black now!  Look awesome!

Double chrome too. I have to say that even though I wasn't a fan of the black markings on the Gen 5, the gen 6 imo with the black band on the bottom looks better to me than the new double chrome. I was expecting to like the all chrome more. But now that I see it, it looks kind of blocky. I also don't like how it highlights the notch in the sole, as I always prefer a clean, smooth looking sole. I don't love Xtreme dark but I'm ok provided it has steel/silver shaft. Dark shaft on Xtreme dark is too unfamiliar for me, no matter who makes it

I haven’t hit side but side but prefer the top view address of the gen 6p. I like a rounder top line which makes it look thinner to my eye

Totally agree on this, plus the srixon soles work better for steeper swingers.

I've got a shallower angle of attack so the PXG's work better. I think they feel better and are faster and lower spin than the Srixon's.

The nearest club to the PXG I think are Paradym. They don't feel or look as good, but I think performance is similar.

Anyone compare these to the srixon zx5 mkii irons?

Srixons seem to fly higher and spin more. Feel is more like a crack than a compressed thud. Overall not as forgiving. Visually the sole on Srixon short irons is huge although the shaved back does make it play effectively smaller....just visually I never got comfortable with it.

Tempted to get the all black Gen 6, but still like my Gen 4’s and then Gen 7’s are right around the corner.  Plus, live in NE Ohio, so golf season probably coming to a close.  🙂

Pretty sure PXG is going to an every other year release on the 0311's. So that would be 2025 for the G7's.

If someone knows otherwise I'm sure they will post.

I thought the same but with the price drop I have decided to pull the trigger on a set of gen 6 XP.  Now to decide if double black or double chrome.

Also, I had an outdoor fitting for the Srixon ZX4 MKII on Friday but I just struggled hitting those the entire time.   Could have been the weather but overall I liked the feel of the PXG much better.

edit to add that I bought the double chrome.  Now looking at the gen 5 driver and fairway woods.

Yeah the Srixon do fly higher, I had the 585/785s and were just towering shots, when I tested irons I asked about the new Srixon and the fitter said I'd be hitting them a mile high and that was something I wanted to avoid.

Really - that would be good if they do.  I prefer every other year, but has that changed from the new Gen release of 0311’s every year for the past 4 years?

Yes Sir, they have had a release pretty much every year from Gen 1 to now with the Gen 6's.

So now until they change it again, the 0311 releases will be every other year. So Gen 7 will come out in early 2025.

We really need to quit posting this video. Doesn’t do Pxg or Us wanting good info on the Gen6 any justice to have these guys showing anything.

Oh come on why not it's just an honest review from 2 average golfers as they all can't be 100% positive reviews as this review doesn't convince me in wanting to buy them or not. You will always have haters as all that matters is what I like and think about them, and if I wouldn’t have already have just bought my irons I would have the Double Black Gen 6 XP’s
