Strange Study On Golf

This is one weird study about golfers:

It lists 20 terms golfers "aren't sure of". With the exception of "handicap" not one of these terms is referred to in the actual rules and a number of them I can't say I have heard very often from any serous golfer. The Nineteenth WHOLE - WTF? No Idea what a buzzard is? Banana Ball - (I get what it is, but never use the term). What a weird collection of "golf" terms they used for this poll.

I take it you are an avid golfer / golf fan and you have not heard of some of these. What a weird selection of terms they chose to survey.

I'm pretty sure I know all terms, but buzzard.  A barkie is a par or better on a hole when one of the shots bounced off a tree. I think a back hander is a putt so close that you can safely make it back handed with the back of the putter.

yes but it is bizarre, that they are pretending these are golf terms golfers should know. I am vaguely familiar with some, never use others, and only 3 or 4 (like birdie or fade) would something I would use regularly.

I use more of those terms than you (maybe half).  Mostly use synonyms for others. Some I use very rarely because they almost never apply. I agree that it is a strange study.

Know all the terms except "buzzard" and nineteenth hole spelled with a "w" is strange.

1-4> put me down for a snowman because I had a barkie because of that dam*fried egg lie  and I chilli dipped one too.

5-8> hit a buzzard so I air mailed the green with that bananas ball off the tee and still hit the dance floor (drivable par 4 pards)

9-12> missed that back hander because I was thinking about that dam* cat box

should have been on the carpet instead I dribbled it off the tee too.

13-16> never had an albatross but I've celebrated at the 19th hole with an ace and that eagle on the par 5 was sweet.

17-20> wth ! I could have sworn I I hit the right club dam* flyer,  ! this is not helping my handicap hitting fades all day but those two 3's on the par 4's helped.

Whew....

Disclaimer....I have never ever used this terminology on a real golf course !

It's just "put me down for a birdie, par or that dastardly bogey or worse " 👍

Ah Haaaaa !!!! Never heard of a barkie myself but I thought it had a UK ring to it.

 

Then again, what can one expect from an article from the Independent (UK) posted on a Canadian Yahoo ?!?!?!

I haven’t heard “buzzard” in years. It was slang for a double bogey in my youth. The other terms are common golf slang. We play greenies, sandies, barkies, skins, and appearance fees in our weekend games.

I thought a ‘barkie’ was when you’re playing on a course with houses around it and a dog in someone’s backyard barks at you while you pass by or while you’re hitting a shot that landed close to their yard! 😜
