Putter that rolls well

Elkhair

Recommended Posts

Had a putting lesson on Quintic and noticed my ball starts with slight backspin and skids a little because I launch it a little high. I dont get forward roll early enough. I take the putter back inside and push a little. Seemed like I was using my wrists too much and hitting the ball below the equator low on the face.

I also was accelerating too much in the through swing.

All this said I struggled with speed control. Would a putter with insert or grooves help with forward spin and get me a better roll.

I was looking at the Taylormade Juno or soto.

Currently use a Bettinardi studio stock 28 from like 2019.

Why don't you just bend the putter to have less loft?

That's why I asked the question. If I knew what to do I would not have posted.

Lots of inserts can help you. The TaylorMade insert is a darn good one. For getting quick forward spin — even with inconsistent launch patterns — a radial face as on Bobby Grace putters and also on the newly launched Makefield putters can make a difference. The Bettinardi Roll Control face is also designed to promote forward spin.

If it was a lesson didn't your putting coach give you some ways to improve your putter delivery?  Seems backwards to take a putting lesson then start shopping for putters instead of fixing the core putter delivery issues.

Yup

kinda thinking the same thing.

or at least the teacher should have given some basic guidance?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sik Putters have milled face tech called "Descending loft technology".  Google it and see if it is for you.

I would take another lesson or two, get comfortable with your swing, before switching putters.

Have your putter specs checked and bent before you buy another one. If you need lower loft and you buy a putter with the same loft you'll have the same issues just with a new putter.

Have similar issues. Had the putter bent to a stronger loft helped.

Also heard good things about the Bettinardi roll control face.

Currently use the QB6. Have an Inovai 6 Spud Neck on order. No way to demo so I can't give you personal feedback.

Hope to get in within a week or so. Taken almost 3 months ... :(

I did improve my stroke during the lesson, and my numbers got better, but they are still not not great. I dont have unlimited time and money to take unlimited lessons, so getting a putter that fits me seems more worthwhile than taking a ton of lessons.

basically, he had me have 60% of my weight on my front leg and have a feel of hitting down on the ball. Even with these intents i was still hitting up too much. I will probably ask him, and get a degree or more taken off the putter to see if that helps.

Loft bending is the cheapest and quickest way to see change especially if the coach can do it right there during the fitting.

Any PXG putter, just pic your style and toe hang needed. Their putters have the best milled face on the market. Put a great consistent roll on the ball. PXG putters are very underrated as most of the attention goes to their irons, and deservedly so.

Two things:

1 Decrease the loft on your putter. Surprised if you paid for a fitting that your fitter didn’t adjust your putter.

2 Imho grooves absolutely help. In a huge believer in the Evnroll technology, but any face that has a groove/friction pattern are better to get ball rolling quicker.

Agree with reducing putter loft. I don’t feel comfortable with a lot of weight on front foot or forward pressing. I do believe in effective loft at impact not built in loft. If you’re hitting up on the ball consistently reduce loft to 1-2* and see how it works. May need to adjust for green speeds.
Other option is to try Bobby Grace putter. Has the best roll of any putter I’ve tried regardless of where my hands are at impact. Hits ball above equator and has immediate roll. I have 2 different styles and like them both. Fixes some of my putting faults.

Optimum loft at impact is between 1.5 to 2 degrees.

The player needs to deloft to that during the stroke for higher loft putters.

Most players make contact on the bottom of the face with a rising AoA in an attempt to hit up, thinking it will reduce backspin, but that will increase time/distance to true roll if contact is below the equator of the ball, as it usually is.

Just like in the full swing, what people think is happening is not always true. The only way to know is to test with launch monitors, otherwise it’s just a guess. How can anyone know if a ball is rolling end-over-end with subjective feel or their eyes?

I was soundly criticized before by people before for saying testing putters for spin and MOI is better than guessing and subjective feel. I trust it will happen again, but I’m used to it.

I’ve never been able to verify that any insert reduces backspin. Grooves on a face have no effect with drivers or putters, unless you have grass or water on the face.
