If it was based on a talent/ability gap I would agree. Gretzky was on a different level than anyone.

 

Tiger and Brady are probably the least athletic.

Brady - Best QB ever, but not definitively the best in his sport (Jerry Rice)

Jordan - My pick for best basketball player, but again, not definitively the best in his sport (Kobe, Lebron)

Unless we start looking at smaller sports like wrestling, as noted above, or track and field.  Edwin Moses won 122 400m hurdle races in a row over a span of 10 years.  That's pretty studly.  Ohani may become that guy in baseball if he keeps doing what he's doing.  Don Bradman in cricket was a beast.

LeBron is an all time great player but being a tough guy and a flopper at the same time just doesn't work all that well imho.  If we are talking championships then Bill Russell is number one.  Russell also gets my vote for smartest B-Ball player ever.

FWIW, I completely agree on Lebron and his antics.  Embarassing for someone who is in a GOAT conversation.  

 

Also, please note that I did not say Kobe or Lebron was better, only that they are in the conversation.  Russell & Wilt should be as well, IMHO, but Jordan is the BBall GOAT to me. 

 

My main point is that if there is even a discussion about an athlete being the GOAT in their own sport, how can they possibly be the GOAT of all sports?  Hence why I said Gretzky is the closest we have in the big 4/5 sports around the world.  

 

Phelps maybe?  28 total medals with the 2nd place (guys or gals) a bunch of folks tied with 12.  Sheesh, that guy was good!

 

If it isn't single sport dominance then, for men, Jim Thorpe has to be the winner, right?  For ladies, Didrikson-Zaharias, right?

Best in clutch? Tiger/Jack, MJ, Joe Montana. I wouldn’t necessarily for Brady in this.

I’d put Tiger/Jack extremely high on this list as golf is an individual sport with some of the highest pressure executions required under a type of pressure. That’s very different than “fluid sports”. 
 

Best leader? Here I’d put Brady, along with Bradshaw, Staubach (I’m sure there are others, but these are guys that I saw) and MJ

 

Hardest worker? Not surprisingly…the guys above for sure.

 

Biggest heart? No question about that…
