"Every shot counts" – When to concede a putt.

Not sure I totally understand what you're saying,  but it's match play where the hitting order is very strict, not medal.

That's what I'm saying. You have someone who doesn't concede short putts, so it bleeds into other parts of the game. IE the chap flailing around, I'd normally tell them to pick up after six or so if I have a good look at three. But if they want all the short putts knocked in, then I'll wait until he's got his ball inside mine.

If they can't beat you on a hole, tell em to pick up. Watching them flail will creep into your game.

I go into every match (especially Am events outside my club) expecting to putt everything and usually come away feeling like guys were generous. I'm pretty easy going and flexible because at the end of the day i just don't care. 

 

If guys want to put it in the hole every time? Fine--They have to do it too. So why complain?

 

If guys want to be generous....OK, i will give them some putts too as long as i'm comfortable with it and i'd consider myself average in that regard. 

 

Guys who get mad about lack of concessions are funny to me.....If it's a gimme, just slam it in the hole.....If you're worried about missing, i guess it's not a gimme then right?

Only thing I hate about concessions in matchplay is guys that have stupid lines for it or have lines you cant tell if they are talking about the flag, your ball, or some other random thing.

Yeah I must admit with a few professionals committing faux pas with concessions I try to be as clear as possible when I say to pick up etc. Same with people mumbling, if I'll not sure I'll just knock it in if it's my turn.

When I’m refereeing match play, one of the things that I say to the players is to make their concessions clear to me and to their opponent(s).

Yep,  I’ve only heard this twice in 48 years. Same guy, same match.  25 years younger than me, and an asst pro.  He hit it past me by 30 yards all day.

Asked him if he said it was good (because he mumbled),  answer “I’m not going to tell you three times”.  Huh? 

I  closed him out on 16 in a significant regional tourney for the title.  He left without shaking my hand…

If truly you believe literally "Every Shot Counts" the correct time to concede a putt is "Never".

The numbers are the numbers, but if the caution is against being super generous, concessions for putts that matter, IMO, aren't getting outside the 2 foot range very often anyway and really have more to do (even at 2 feet) with conditions/break/and so forth vs. what the ruler says, IMO.  I rarely play match play and would be just as happy if we just holed everything out, so no real expectations here, but man, some folks do get fussy after they miss a putt they feel entitled to have been given (as we all know proving they have no reason to get fussy).  It was getting really dark fast and really cold our last night of league - once the other guys starting expanding the circle of friendship, lol, we had no problem doing the same - pretty sure I gave my opponent a 7 footer for par on the last hole before our dark ride cross country to the clubhouse.

Why? If he pick up after 6 you’ve conceded his 7. Why not just call his good and putt yours if he’s to ignorant to say it’s good.  If you’ve got a 10 foot birdie putt you’re not sure you can three putt to win the hole?

This one time in league play, my opponent and I each had about a 2.5 foot putt. He was just outside of mine. He said "good-good?" I said sure.... What was funny is he was putting for 5, and I for 4 (no strokes) so I won the hole. He just didn't want to make a double. lol

I would have just conceded your putt and picked mine up. 🙃
