The urge to match my wedges to my irons

mvhoffman

Recommended Posts

Long story short...

Sold all my TM irons/wedges.  Got a set of Nike Vapor Fly 4-AW.  Gaming 2 mint CBX wedges that have been great however I'm fighting the urge to swap out the CBX wedges for some old school Nike Engage wedges.  Don't know if they are "conforming" however I don't play in any sanctioned tournaments where I'd even have to worry about that.

Thoughts?

@mvhoffman I know where your coming from, been there done that myself LOL. Sorry I cannot say if those Nike Wedges are "conforming" or not but Nike at the "oven" did make some great wedges and I believe the VR Pro X3X were "conforming" and have a buddy that has a set and he absolutely loves them. I also have a friend who no longer plays competative golf and he has a small collection of the Red Saw Vokey's and both of these guys are in the top tier when it comes to wedge play around these parts.

Best of luck

I'm absolutely with you and the top end of my bag reflects that as I'm still rocking the Adams Tight Lies from 2014-2016.

Wedges, I've never been too brand specific as I'm a pretty good wedge player.  The only wedges that I really have never gotten with have been Callaway.  I've tried them many times and just can't get them.  I don't know why.  I usually go for the wedges that I really like the looks of more than anything.

I have a really nice set of VR Pro wedges that I had refinished by Flanigan Bilt. My all time favorite wedges.

And, in true WRX fashion, I'm going to sell them next week to pay for the Fourteen RM-4's I just bought.

To answer your question, yes, Engage wedges are conforming. As are the VR Pro's, which are now going on 12 years old.

Man - I loved those VR Pro's.  Something about them just always felt right.  I love my Cleveland lines, but I still haven't found one that felt as good as those.  (yes, I know I'm weird)

Unfortunately, I understand all too well and everyone is different.  Some say it takes weeks or months to dial in a set of wedges.  I always play 50/54/58 with a lower bounce 54 and a higher 58 so regardless of what brand they all tend to play similar enough I can adapt quickly.

When I look at my bag, I like my “irons” to all match.  I’ve been playing slate blue sm8 for over a year and I love my black 0317 CB, so naturally I’m looking at black PXG wedges…

If you’re on a Nike kick, the Engage wedges would be a nice match.  Enjoy!

Nike Engage wedges hit the market in 2015, about 18 months before Nike exited the club manufacturing industry. Should be conforming, as the new grooves rule came into effect in 2010.

Play whatever makes you love your bag and gets you playing more.  That’s what matters.

I’m with you, though, in all honesty.  Had a mint set of jpx 921 tours built in early summer and I had to get some t22’s to go with them.  Haha… I know the feeling.

I would just exploit the manifold options you have in current "up-to-date" wedges to match with your set.

Nike Engage wedges just cannot compete with current wedges. You will be able to find something that is more forgiving, has the same type of launch angle, height, more spin/forgiving, more stopping power etc and is just a better club than these that are nearly a decade old now.

We have a gazillion options with wedges now. Fair, you want to stick with an older iron set for whatever reason, but wedges are a different story for a number of reasons. Explore what we have now. Billions has been spent on RnD in the golfing industry in the last decade or so, not exploiting that is nonsensical.

I say go for it…get the Nike wedges and then see if you like them…if you don’t try you don’t know it doesn’t work

when I got serious I wanted all my clubs to be Mizuno and so matched everything but turns out didn’t like those wedges because of the shaft and lighter head…went to vokeys and don’t think will look back

I usually try to match but it never turns out that way. They may feel similar but that's about it. Play with what works for you.

Modern pitching wedge is somewhere around 45°.  So if your adding the gap to match your irons I’m guessing it’s easy to keep your gaps where you like staying by within the house.

I haven’t but staying in house is always an option

interesting to me that most game improvement or super game improvement seem to have it all the way through lob while most “shot maker” irons don’t.
