Odyssey Ai-ONE: the real deal..?

Quite compelling results in the head to head against a traditional milled blade (Scotty)

 

For those of us who simply can’t put away the blade style putter do we have some technology that really can help?

Also get your specs and bend the putter to that.

Bobby Grace and Nation Custom Works did inserts to aid in off centre hits. Nothing really new.

Wow. The vid is actually pretty compelling. I dont see how anyone can the argue the validity of the AI-face tech.

Not with the AI it's more the face and if you look on the Odyssey page for each putter line you'll notice the back of the insert looks like to Topography map. So certain spots are "hotter" for miss hits to get the ball to roll to the hole better vs a face that is even. 

 

It's nothing new in putters, but maybe after a version or two it will be better than others with the use of AI, just look at their drivers since they introduced the AI Face in the Epic Flash to now.

I've seen them. But it's just a gimmick. Their blades are coming in at 360g instead of a classic 340-350. So they're comparing against a putter that is lighter.... That's it. It's just an MOI difference.

Their One and Two are 355g and they have these magical removable weights to make them 340-350g if one wishes to fit the putter better to them, plus nothing weighs 340g anymore for stock putters and 5-10g isn't going to make a difference on the MOI by much.

This isn't true. The ball speed is more evened out across the face. It is a lot like what Evnroll does but doesn't feel horrible and dead in the middle of the putter with Odyssey's way.

 

That said, I would like to see a robot head to head of the ai 7 vs the Trihot 7, or the ai Doublewide vs the Trihot Doublewide. Most of the trihot models didn't feel great but they were definitely stable. The Ai line feels a lot more solid and better. I have the Doublewide in both and prefer the Ai one series.

I've been gaming the Ai ONE double wide for 4 days now. I'm not a robot but I can vouch for that technology. It definitely seems to know the distance to the hole, no hot spots or soft spots on the insert like my last three putters.  And that's with the cellophane wrapper still on, just in case I have to return it for a full refund.

So odyssey adds a tiny bit of material in the insert and markets it as 21% better and everyone thinks that it's the best thing since sliced bread??? Does every new driver add 5 more yards too? I'm over the golf marketing BS where every new product is whatever % better and you need to buy it.

I understand your skepticism, but I have one in my hands right now and what they say is true... not just a self-fulfilling prophesy.  Every once in awhile technology breaks a barrier.

They didn't say it was 21% better.  21% closer to the hole on putts of 32 feet.  They robot-tested it against other models and against the Scotty Cameron.

Not 21% better but 21% closer to the hole according to their site, people still have to make the putt but miss hits are not as punished, that's what they are trying to do. They are trying to improve miss hits for golfers which everyone has, if their face leaves someone with a 2ft tap in instead of a 4ft knee knocker then that's a better putter. 

 

And again they are not the first to do or claim this, this has been the whole point behind Evnroll, they are just doing it different and better imo since the putter still feels responsive.

MOI is definitely a real thing. No denying that. But it's not a new thing

Has anyone benchmarked Odyssey Ai-ONE against similarly claimed Envroll, Bobby Grace's & even Ping's variable depth technology? 

 

These tech essentially claim the same thing that is off center hits do not lose as much distance as the non-tech putters.

Their ai insert has nothing to do with MOI. If you’re arguing the only reason the putter did better than the Scotty is entirely down to MOI - not sure what to say. I’m seeing better results with the Ai one doublewide than the trihot doublewide and I’m pretty sure the trihot is higher MOI. Like I said above, I’d love to see a robot test difference between ai one and trihot in the same putter head design.

Nobody is talking about MOI.  And in this case the change in MOI is negligible.  This is a a change across the putter insert, not really MOI.

The last time I owned an Evnroll it claimed the face self-corrected for putts starting left or right of your intended line.  I don't remember it addressing the distance control issue.

The cool thing about this tech is that it can be combined with a high MOI head design too. It’s not like you can’t have both. The doublewide head performed a lot better for me than the #1 head. It felt way more stable.
