Who is the most disappointing winner of a tournament ever?

I was actually for Westwood in the 2009 Open because I thought he deserved a major more than anyone at the time and he had a great chance but went for a long putt on the last hole chasing a birdie and ended up three-putting when two putts would have made a playoff he'd have a good chance of winning.

I was young enough when Watson did what he did and was precious about golf to my friends, I didn't really want a 59-year-old winning a tournament, because it would propagate that golf was an old man's sport "didn't a 59yo win? How athletic can it be?"

As I got older though I appreciated that achievement of Watson and look back at it differently. I also look back on Westwood differently 1) he didn't have it in him mentally to win a major, choked the big moments and probably would have lost to Cink anyway 2) he's shown his true colours past few years with LIV. Cink is also a good player who deserved a major a lot more than many of the winners in the 2000s. 8 PGA Tour wins, top 10 in the world player on his day. Seems like a nice guy. But still by far the best outcome was Tom Watson winning.

Not just a 59-year old, a 59-year old nine months removed from hip replacement surgery...

Rich Beem won a Tour event the week before the PGA if I remember right. Pretty great example of momentum in sports. He carried those awesome vibes from the previous event into a great performance at the PGA.

Talk about disappointing finishes but Beem won that tournament (the International) over a surging Steve Lowery who went HAM over the last four holes.  He holed out for an eagle and a double eagle and had a birdie to win but it missed.  Arguably the wildest finish to a tournament I've ever seen.

This…

I’d say a poor chip and putt on the 72nd hole was more the issue.🤔

As a Kentuckian, it was tough to see Kenny Perry give up the Masters with a 2-shot lead with 2 to play.  I wouldn't say it was the MOST disappointing as I'd point to Greg Norman losing in '96 for that (and Tom Watson in '09 at the Open and David Duval/Phil at the '09 U.S. Opens for second place) but it was tough to watch that.

Matt Atkins beating George Bryan in a play off to win the myrtle beach ( youtube) qualifier. Guy completely deserves it as he has made over 100+ Korn ferry, and 26 PGA starts and truly is a "pro". However it would fun to see George in another PGA tour start.

George got an invite anyway! Couldn’t have worked out better. If George won I bet crashing doesn’t get the invite. Now they both get to play. I’m super stoked.

However, with revisionist knowledge, these days I smile every time I see him collapse that fateful Sunday.

Agree. I’ve posted in another thread how I turned off the TV and went out and walked 9 holes.

Wouldn’t be the same now.

Still bummed about that... seeing Kenny Perry in a green jacket amongst all the uppity ups and elitists.

Cabrera defeating Kenny Perry at the Masters.
Woods defeating DiMarco at the Masters.

Cameron Smith winning at St. Andrews.
Shaun Micheel at the PGA.
And Andy North two times at the US Open.

was waiting for someone to say Kenny Perry losing. I remember watching that, Perry was 2 up with 2 to go, I just remember watching, thinking "I'm glad Kenny will win, but I want to see more golf", then he hit a shaky chip on 17 and bogeyed 18.

Really its a lot of Masters for me, as mentioned above. Most Masters Champions are great, just would like to see Rory, Perry, Rickie than Willet, Angel and P as champions ( I don't go to the dinner so what does it really matter).

I'd also say that Faldo's final round there never gets enough credit.  I definitely didn't appreciate it at the time but he went out there, remained steady, and just applied as much pressure as he could with that 67 and Greg wilted around Amen Corner.

Cink winning The Open over Watson in 2009 - nothing comes close.  EOT!!!!!

It was agonizing to watch...same swing but 9 iron and that's all she wrote!!
Why are we on page 6??  😕

Based on what I've read, Watson had the right club but a gust of wind got behind his ball once it was airborne and that's what made it fly the green.  And a commentator later highlighted that if his ball had hit the green like 2-3 feet behind where it did that the ball would've just trickled right next to the hole rather than running off.

But having guys like that in the event ruined it.  It should have been limited to actual YT golfers.  Not legit touring pros with some YT presence. Everyone not real touring pro was drawing dead right from the start.

Surprised by all the support for Kenny Perry vs Cabrera on here. Before his legal issues came to light, Cabrera was a chain smoking cult hero who bombed the ball with a homemade swing

Kenny Perry was not good enough at chipping to miss the greens at Augusta and it cost him the tournament

Yeah - they're not going to just give a PGA Tour start to some random youtuber. What the pros added to it was legitimacy, so that whoever wound up winning could legitimately say that they beat some PGA Tour level players to get in and therefore deserved a spot.

For me it's Cam Smith stealing the Open from Rory a couple years back

Rory was stuck in neutral. If Smith didn’t take it then it would have been Young.

Of the top 20 players that day Rory had the 4th worst round.  It wasn’t a spectacular implosion, but he was never going to win.
