This tourney slightly unusual. Lacking most of the big names, and ... the golf media is always going to pay at least a little more attention to local boys in any tourney. Jordan is a Dallas guy. Had a decent sized gallery (for someone that didn't even make the cut). Lots of friends and family there. 

 

Most pro team sports - MLB, NFL, NBA - are firmly anchored in cities or states - location largely determines the fan base. The Dallas Cowboys, Boston Red Sox, Indiana Pacers & etc. The local fans identify with their teams. In the individual sports (e.g., tennis and golf) it is obviously much different, and "hometown" means a lot less. But that doesn't mean that it means nothing. And for Jordan in particular. A lot of the pros move a lot, and locate in cities for convenience - i.e., they don't have any particular loyalty or identification with a city, they just happen to live there. Rory lives in Jupitar FL (as well as several other PGAT pros). But no one in Jupiter would ever go out of their way to watch or see Rory because he was a "local boy". And he himself still completely identifies as an Irishman. Jupiter is merely optimal for his career in terms of logistics and taxes. 

 

But Jordan is a hard core Texas local boy. Born in Dallas, went to school in Dallas, started playing at the Brookhaven CC (just north of Dallas), went to College at the U of T at Austin (for a couple years). Still lives in Dallas. 

 

He was covered unusual heavily, but that makes sense. The media (like it or not) is pretty aware of audience demographics. He did get an unusual amount of coverage (for someone playing clearly mediocre golf), but, despite the mediocre golf he also had an unusually large gallery, and I'd bet Neilson numbers would show that the Texas viewers were watching at a slightly higher percentage than is the norm. The media - bluntly put - broadcasts what their stats tell them will engage the largest numbers (their entire business model is based of eyeball numbers). 

 

It is why Tiger (much to the dismay of a few folks here) will always be broadcast entirely whenever he is in a tourney. Won't matter whether he's playing amazing or seriously sucking. Not the point. Viewership numbers go up when he is playing, and his galleries are still huge. The media wants to deliver what it believes it's audience desires. 

 

Tiger, however, is at an entirely different level. He's global. He'll be covered heavily wherever he plays (US, EU, Asia or whatever). Jordan is obviously no where near that globally, but he is that locally in Texas. He "bumps the numbers". Almost every shot was covered. He got Tiger-level treatment. Because he is a Texan. Not just living there for convenience, but because was born and raised and live there. The  crowd at the Byron Nelson is his "home team".

 

So I completely get why the producers and directors coverage choices reflected that.

 

And, in truth, I'm totally fine with that. I've always liked that guy. He is "quietly good". He has been fairly (slightly weirdly) inconsistent. But this is still a serious player of the game. And did not suck at all to watch Jordan - (clearly) trying to figure out a new swing.

There were 70% thunderstorms that were going to be in the area from 8-11am but they came through late last night so weather looks good today

Makes me feel sick. 

That's my 3 wood total distance if I flush it😭.

Yeah, just pulled up weather radar and saw they were already east of town by dawn. Planning ahead and weather was one step further ahead. 😁

I know some 75-year-old guys who would give a million bucks to be able to flush a 3-wood 220 yards. They'd feel a little sick watching you play!

 

Heck, I'm nowhere near that old and can maybe get 220 out of my very best driver shot in a round, if I'm lucky and the fairways are firm. 

 

It's all relative.

Pretty lame to complain, but the commentary is getting really old. It's like they're paid by the word. I miss when it was much more simple, when things like sportscenter were straightforward and matter-of-fact instead of all the yip yap

100% agree.  The PGA Tour talks about wanting to improve the fan experience, but they’ve done absolutely nothing about the worst aspect of the Tour, the horrific announcers and paid commentators.  Save for a handful of folks who are exceptional, I’d fire pretty much everyone who currently wears on mic on The Golf Channel or NBC/CBS coverage.  It’s great that they’ve mostly purged the bitter old guard like Azinger, Faldo, and Miller, and gotten a little younger, but there’s still a ton of work to do improving the team.  No other major sport in the US has announcing near as awful as golf.
